This rambler’s small kitchen was dysfunctional and out of touch with our client’s needs. She desired a larger footprint without an addition or expanding the footprint to stay within a realistic budget for her homes size and neighborhood.
The existing kitchen was “boxed-in” at the back of the house. The entrance from
the hallway was very narrow causing congestion and cramping the cook. In the living room the existing fireplace was a room hog, taking up the middle of the house. The kitchen was isolated from the other room’s downstairs.
The design team and homeowner decided to open the kitchen, connecting it to the dining room by removing the fireplace. This expanded the interior floor space. To create further integration amongst the spaces, the wall opening between the dining and living room was also widened. An archway was built to replicate the existing arch at the hallway & living room, giving a more spacious feel.
The new galley kitchen includes generous workspaces and enhanced storage. All designed for this homeowners’ specific needs in her kitchen. We also created a kitchen peninsula where guests can sit and enjoy conversations with the cook. (After 5,6) The red Viking range gives a fun pop of color to offset the monochromatic floor, cabinets and counters. It also plays to her Stanford alumni colors.
One of our favorite and most notable features of this kitchen is the “flip-out” window at the sink. This creative solution allows for an enhanced outdoor living experience, without an expansive remodel or addition. When the window is open the party can happen inside and outside with an interactive experience between spaces. The countertop was installed flush to the window, specifically designed as a cocktail/counter rail surface.

Our client facing mobility issues wanted to stay in the home he had purchased with his wife in 1963, and raised his family in. He needed a bathroom on the first floor, because he had decided he was not moving.
We needed to create an accessible full bath on his first floor using existing space. We used a portion of his sitting room/office for the bathroom and his family moved his couch and tv to the other half, and then turned his living room into his new bedroom.
We converted half of his sitting room to a wet room. The space was directly above plumbing in the basement and also had a window.
The shower space does not have an enclosure, only a 17-inch glass panel to protect the medicine cabinet and sink. We added a wall sink to keep floor space open and a large doubled mirror medicine cabinet to provide ample storage.
The finishing touch was a pocket door for access; the client chose a door that mirrors the front door which added a bit of interest to the area.
We also removed the existing carpeting from the first floor after well-preserved pine flooring was discovered underneath the carpet. When the construction was complete the family redecorated the entire first floor to create a bedroom and sitting area.

BeachHaus is built on a previously developed site on Siesta Key. It sits directly on the bay but has Gulf views from the upper floor and roof deck.
The client loved the old Florida cracker beach houses that are harder and harder to find these days. They loved the exposed roof joists, ship lap ceilings, light colored surfaces and inviting and durable materials.
Given the risk of hurricanes, building those homes in these areas is not only disingenuous it is impossible. Instead, we focused on building the new era of beach houses; fully elevated to comfy with FEMA requirements, exposed concrete beams, long eaves to shade windows, coralina stone cladding, ship lap ceilings, and white oak and terrazzo flooring.
The home is Net Zero Energy with a HERS index of -25 making it one of the most energy efficient homes in the US. It is also certified NGBS Emerald.

The conference table peninsula easily fits four people and stands on a single pillar, so no one has to straddle table legs during meetings. When I am not meeting with others, I have plenty of work space on the conference table and above the storage cabinets along the wall. These cabinets have touch latches so there are no handles for my desk chair to get caught on as I swivel. There is additional storage under the peninsula and above the desk and media center in handy flip-up-front cabinets.

Dramatic circular molding adorns the Brussels style. This bold circular molding design is inspired by 18th century European furniture. Available in three popular finishes, white, charcoal grey and ash. This cabinet bed has a 50 inch wide x 5-1/2 inch deep drawer for storing pillows or bedding. Felt covered runners and fold out legs support the fold-down front panel when open. No need to remove objects from the top of the cabinet to use the bed. Simply move items towards the back, lift the flip top, open slide bolts to release the front panel. The flip top gives the sleeper more head room and special hardware keeps it in an upright position. The cabinet bed is an extraordinarily comfortable concelaed bed with a 40% smaller foot print than a sleeper sofa.
