Our Burlington client hired us to beautifully update the living room, dining room and lounge area of their main floor. The final result was stunning and so well put together that the clients have since hired us back to create a custom design for their principal bedroom.

The renovation was designed around the premise of being able to shower or bathe and enjoy the beautiful country vistas from all angles. A beautiful free-standing tub was centred among the oversized windows which lightened that end of the bathroom. A European inspired walk through shower was created with an integrated tiled drain. The six foot wide floor-to-ceiling glass wall provides drama with its simplicity. A feature wall was created in the shower to house the plumbing and was kept sleek and simple with natural looking tiles. The barnboard looking floor was inspired by the surrounding barns on the property. The graceful lines of the tub are reflected in the vessel sinks that sit atop the two maple Miralis vanities. A mirrored toe kick was used to create the illusion of suspension while still providing long term structural stability. The wooden ledge above the vanity acts as a landing zone for toothbrushes and makeup which maximizes the space of the shallower vanity. The clean lines of the space draw your eye to the outside and the air and light flows through the bathroom.

Julian Hodges - Featured Project of the Month by Truitt & White This month featured project brings you beautifully crafted gates and entryways from local craftsman Julian Hodges. For over 35 years, Mr. Hodges has been designing and crafting custom wooden gates in Berkeley and the greater Bay Area. His projects mainly feature old growth, vertical grained redwood or western red cedar which is air or kiln dried. The gates are fully mortised and tenoned (male / female joints) and a very powerful epoxy is used to glue the parts together. Wherever a floating panel rides in a dado, drainage is provided in the form of several holes that are out of sight that allow any rain water to be ushered out at the bottom of the gate enabling the gate to dry itself rather than staying damp which otherwise could lead to long term decomposition of the wood. Adding to the unique feel of each gate, Julian creates his own custom hardware from heavy gauge steel, which also provides a pleasing solid sound as it operates. This Passive solar home also features solar panels that will fully offset all heating & cooling and electrical needs. Insulated Concrete Form walls with extensive air sealing and tilt-n-turn windows, and colored concrete floors work together to provide a secure and tranquil indoor environment, Greenguard certified paints, a mini-split heat pump, and heat recovery ventilator ensure the air is pure and healthy. An exposed fastener metal roof, LP SmartSide siding over Benjamin Opdyk Hydrogap, and a combination of triple pane Access windows and doors and triple pane Northstar windows with Pro-Clima flashing ensure long term durability and low maintenance. A custom real fieldstone wood burning fireplace adds warmth to the already very comfortable home.

Designed a kitchen that would be bright, sunny, and open. In terms of functionality, it needed to have ample room to work and plenty of storage. Flooring, backsplash, and floating shelves were planned using natural tones and materials to lend warmth to the area. Design choice for countertops was Cambria’s Annica, a new spin on classic marble featuring a neutral white background infused with subtle gray veins and regal gold and purple sparkle.

According to Kate, the remodel process did not intimidate her at all. “I’m that special person that loves building IKEA furniture. It’s like adult LEGOs, but the life-size Swedish edition! I figured we could save money on our remodel by building the cabinetry and drawers myself,” she notes. “I created a numbering system (based off of IKD’s documents) for my fantastic general contractor, who did the actual installation in terms of hanging the cabinet framework and getting everything in the right place. The installation was a total breeze. He loved the IKD documentation. I had a full copy of the packet printed and labeled for him, and he used them exclusively as his guide in the installation process,” she says. The TINGSRYD Black door fronts are featured on the upper cabinetry around the stainless steel Samsung refrigerator and double oven to the wall by the sink. MAXIMERA drawers provide additional storage and perfect organization along the base cabinetry and throughout the long center island. And the IKEA KASKER quartz countertops on the island and perimeter offer a sense of warmth to an all black kitchen. Tying the look together is hardwood flooring, a large hood from AKDY over the island and natural lighting from an overhead skylight, glass doors and the window over the Soleil farmhouse sink.

Clients wanted to remodel their first floor kitchen and powder bath for their long-term home in a modern, clean, Danish style. We worked in collaboration with the homeowners and their Architect to design the project. We borrowed space from the powder bath to increase the kitchen storage and improve the work flow. Special attention was paid to the architecturally-clean, integrated look and feel of the design details throughout the project and is what creates a wonderful lifelong remodel for the home.
