Drawing inspiration from the traditional design of the house, Juergen’s team utilized bold linear elements like a rectangular pool with cascading water features to provide an elegant contrast to the landscape. Subtle details such as rectangular flower beds, an interlocking stonework design on both the patio and pool deck, and the patio furniture abound, providing visual balance and symmetry that accentuates the elegant simplicity of this unique landscape. Finally, the large patio with a built-in barbeque for entertaining unites the various elements of this design, making it a zen space for relaxation and play.

A Belgard Outdoor Modular Fireplace and Wood Storage Units were used. The original look utilized a very light buff color for the tops and hearth. A concrete dye was applied to try and compliment the Bluestone Patio. Speciman plantings were used to add scale to the fireplace unit.

Halmann Vella was the main supplier of natural stone and assisted in the construction of the M&G Garden, one of the main gardens at the 2017 Chelsea Flower Show. The garden, which was designed by James Basson, director of Scape Design, was awarded a Gold Medal as well as the prestigious award for Best Show Garden and Best Construction. The garden was modelled on the Maltese landscape, particularly a disused Maltese quarry and utilised Maltese stone as well as a number of plants which are endemic to Malta. The garden took a whole year of planning and production. The stone was quarried in Malta and Gozo and eventually fabricated in Halmann Vella’s stone processing facility in Hal Far. During this process, both James Basson and Mark Fane, from the main contracting company Crocus, visited the company’s premises a number of times to supervise the process. Once finished the materials were packed and shipped to London, where a team of 8 Halmann Vella employees, lead by Contracts Manager Josef Zammit and Hugh Vella, Director of Operations at Halmann Vella, installed and finished the stone on site. The Italian Fam House was created to look and feel like a vintage structure found in the middle of the Italian country side. the villa was designed with a private bridge over a seasonal creek and automatic gates were designed at the base of a small slope so the visitor could appreciate the architecture as the gates open. A natural stone walk way leads to the front door which has a latch door handle only ( non locking) with 350 year old oak front door. Privacy trees and landscape we’re designed on the perimeter of the property to allow the client to enjoy the grounds in complete privacy and enhancing the illusion of the farm house. The client wanted to keep the vintage look but have some contemporary features in the garden, a artist studio with pool changing room and shower was designed into the hillside to provide a passive solar efficient structure. The patio was designed with rough cut natural stone and accents of Italian marble. the spa was raised 18″ and utilizes a vanishing edge detail which spills into the vanishing edge pool. Both water details are equipped with LED lighting and are integrated into the home automation. A walking path was designed to a lower lawn area adjacent to the creek , the lawn is designed for family picnics , volleyball games and other summer activities nestled under the oaks and cooler temperature by the creek. Screening and privacy were a important element in this design. Mature Box size shrub and mature tree’s were imported from across northern California and craned into the project.

With a narrow driveway and leaning concrete retaining walls, parking was a major challenge at this 1938 brick Tudor on Spokane's South Hill. Crumbling concrete stairs added another layer of difficulty, and after a particularly rough winter, the homeowners were ready for a change. The failing concrete walls were replaced with stacked boulders, which created space for a new, wider driveway. Natural stone steps offer access to the backyard, while the new front stairs and sidewalk provide a safe route to the front door. The original iron railings were preserved and modified to be reused with the new stairs.

Unlike traditional pools, our bio pool utilizes aquatic plants, beneficial bacteria, and microbes, rather than harsh chemicals, to filter the water. Impurities and excess nutrients are drawn out of the water naturally, creating a much healthier swimming environment. A native plant palette is incorporated throughout the garden with shade trees, ornamentals, native forbs, and perennials in an emergent spring landscape. We hope this exciting design will encourage green inspiration for visitors, whether they have a tight city lot or a larger suburban property.

This project entailed the draining of a 200,000 cubic foot pond which was originally constructed in the early 1900s in order to install a water feature. I had previously dammed the lower pond, which was roughly equivalent in size to the upper pond, with stonework to match the existing stone walkways. The lower pond will be utilized as a catch-basin in an effort to keep the upper pond’s water level at a sufficient height through a pump system. After the removal of over a 100 years worth of sediment, I began constructing several terraces, stone steps, stone walkways, and several stone retaining walls — all stone features were built without the use of mortar so as to allow plant growth, such as vines and flowering plants to grow through the stonework. The difficulty I faced, oddly enough, was trying to be as random as possible with the placement of the stones, so as to make the stonework appear as though it had been built alongside some of the pre-existing 100-year-old stone walls scattered across other areas of the property. In essence, I forced myself to leave larger gaps in between stones where I typically wouldn’t, as well as leave some stones protruding from the wall, and allowing the wall to slightly fluctuate in height. All of which required me to become a perfectionist of randomness, which was quite trying of me. The top 2 feet of the 2,000-foot upper pond was then faced and retained with stone.

The 820 square foot rooftop garden project atop Umbrella House includes the design of a structural steel frame comprised of W14x6 beams and concrete planking to support the raised 8” planting beds. A stormwater management strategy utilizes a mixture of gravel with the planting soil and aims to serve as an example for urban gardens across the New York City. The first planting was in Spring 2015 and so far the garden has produced zucchini, tomatoes, okra, broccoli, spinach, beets, peas, eggplant, lettuce and Swiss chard, among other vegetables and a plethora of flowers and herbs.

The homeowner requested MHG Greens&Gardens to “spruce up” their well kept, but overgrown and monotonous garden. Both, the front and the backyard areas have excellent possibilities for their youngest daughter’s December wedding photo shooting, but they need to be brought into time. The garden was once the family meeting place, with the endless swimming pool parties, the weekend BBQ’s at the gazebo, but the children left for college, and… The challenge was to perk up this once a family garden kingdom, it wasn’t going to be an easy road to revitalization. There were thousands of family memories on each corner of this garden. We drew a plan, first we started in those areas that need to be worked on and that would make a difference, such as the side garden next to the cover patio. This specific area had several add on throw the years, and they were not too attractive, but extremely need. The home owner had added up to date utilities, solar power equipment and other modern technology necessary. Our challenge was to hide or cover all of them from the human eyes. We designed a live wall with Firebush, a semi-woody shrub with bright red flowers that attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Rain Joe or ‘Sunshine’ Ligustrums were set in the front of the firebush hedge, because they perform well in full sun and are ideal as a low-growing hedge and fast-growing in the landscape. To add additional interest, we used two boulders and garlanded them with 'Born of Fire' Bromeliads. The plants were bordered with red mulch and zoysia grass. The gazebo had turn into the temporary storage space. All the outdoor kitchen equipment in the gazebo has been updated and the walkways were festooned. The existing palms on each gazebo walkways, a native coconut palm tree and a fox tail palm tree were surrounded with zoysia grass, ferns, caladiums, cordylines, and several old Spanish urns, family treasures found hidden in the garden, were creatively placed. The swimming pool’s back wall area was bejeweled with cordylines, Podocarpus conifers and Poinsettias. The swimming pool’s water feature and its three tiers of planters were adorned with Crineon (Festival Burgundy Cordyline/ Cordyline x 'JURred') a glossy, exceptionally dark, rich red-burgundy leaves that are spectacular during December (during the weeding days) with its light pink and white blooms and hedged by Café de la India shrubs (Rubiaceae flowering hedge). The top tier, the crown of the garden was decked with three species of Sansevieria. As I have heard from my childhood years, these plants are commonly known as cow tongue or mother-in-law’s tongue, but I also heard that they were used to attract good luck to the household and ward off evil spirits. “Without a doubt, that there will be classic and elegant weddings pictures at our spruced up tropical garden” said the father of the bride to MHG Greens&Gardens.

2012 NARI CAPITAL COTY, FINALIST AWARD WINNER, RESIDENTIAL EXTERIOR UNDER $100,000 The outdoor life means the world to this couple and their three children in Springfield, Virginia. Sports and having friends over are a big part of their lives so having a nice outdoor living space off their home is very important. Unfortunately, the home they purchased had not only a small, crumbling deck, but the backyard landscaping left much to be desired. The main objectives of their outdoor living renovation were to be able to have a large enough patio, deck and screen porch so they could all be outside enjoying their own activities at the same time. Working with Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes, the homeowners decided to add a large deck on the right side of the back of the house and a 20’ x 20’ octagonal screen porch on the left side. In order not to interfere with windows and the placement of utilities on the lower level, the Michael Nash team created a brick walkway which leads to double sided stairways. Maintenance-free decking and accessories are used throughout. A high cathedral ceiling with beaded panels, recessed lights and a ceiling fan make the screened-in porch a family favorite. On the lower level, several trees were removed and the yard was graded level for a new flagstone patio with short stone seating walls. A bed for plants and flower with stone rocks was placed around the utility meters to create a more desirable appearance. The sound of kids playing soccer in backyard while dad is grilling and mom is relaxing on the deck is a dream come true for this family.
