To replace an Old World style kitchen, we created a new space with farmhouse elements coupled with our interpretation of modern European detailing. With our focus on improving function first, we removed the old peninsula that closed off the kitchen, creating a location for conversation and eating on the new cantilevered countertop which provides interesting, yet purposeful design. A custom designed European cube shelf system was created, incorporating integrated lighting inside Rift Sawn oak shelves to match our base cabinetry. After building the shelf system, we placed it in front of the handmade art tile backsplash, bringing a very modern element to contrast with our custom inset cabinetry. Our design team selected the Rift sawn oak for the base cabinets to bring warmth into the space and to contrast with the white upper cabinetry. We then layered matt black on select drawer fronts and specific cabinet interiors for a truly custom modern edge. Custom pull outs and interior organizers fulfill our desire for a kitchen that functions first and foremost, while our custom cabinetry and complete design satisfies our homeowners’ desire for wow. Farmhouse style will never be the same.

When Charlene’s family of four decided to move out of Manhattan, she reached out to Decor Aid, for assistance in furnishing and decorating the family’s new home in Westchester. Although she had already decorated a few upstairs rooms, Charlene needed help in sourcing and decorating the entire bottom floor of her house, and wanted the new home to feel reflective of her young family. The original goal for the project was to infuse three separate design influences. First and foremost, we had to account for Charlene’s personal taste, which is a contemporary take on the mid-century modernist aesthetic. Second, we had to account for the house’s country-modern stylings. And finally, at the request of Charlene’s two young children, we had to incorporate primary colors, to fit the family’s fun and comfortable vibe. Charlene wanted to furnish her home with a blue and grey color scheme, but didn’t want her new space to be stifled by this preference. To keep the home from feeling sterile, we incorporated heavily-textured accessories, fabrics, and rugs. And to contrast the modern with the familial, primary-colored art pieces were set against larger, neutral furnishings. We sourced a custom-made wood dining-room table, and other wood furniture pieces, to bridge the gap between the house’s country-modern vibe and Charlene’s own personal aesthetic. Because of the home’s open floor plan, all of the rooms had to feel continuous, while being differentiated from each-other. So we added large area rugs, in the dining room, living room, and foyer, to distinguish each room. A large sectional sofa faces away from the kitchen, and is backed by a custom-made wood console table, to further separate the rooms. Colorful accent pillows and decorative geometric objects were added throughout the home, to further distinguish each room, and to offset the tasteful, neutral palette. The final effect is a highly elegant and wholly modern interpretation of the American suburban home.

The Yountville Residence was designed to accommodate three family generations coming together over food, wine, outdoor living and the land. Located amongst continuous vineyards on the broad flood plain of the Napa River, creating a strong sense of place was foremost. Rich in a culture of wine making and production from the land, the site demanded a design solution that honored its history and elevated the experience of the land. The house pays homage to its context by creating a reimagined agrarian compound. Conceived as a family of smaller buildings, the architecture comes together around a shaded patio and pool. The kitchen, dining, and living spaces all flow onto the shaded outdoor patio and gardens. Low-sloped gable roofs evoke the agricultural history of the region and echo the gentle slope of the foothills beyond. The home remains understated – quietly drawing one’s attention back to the magnificent natural features of the landscape. Gently pulled back into the heart of the serene vineyards, it is carefully oriented with Stag’s Leap at the foot of the Vaca Mountains to the East and the Mayacamas Range to the West. Scenic views continue uninterrupted through the home. Large window walls slide open and pocket on either side of the house, connecting the family to the outdoors and building a personal experience of place on the Valley floor. “If we can enrich people’s lives, and just maybe inspire them to do something beyond what they might otherwise have done, that brings us great satisfaction.” – Stan Field, fA Principal The connection of the architecture to the land goes beyond its visual connectivity. The design sensitively responds to land and place by recognizing key passive cooling and natural daylighting strategies present on the site. Broad overhanging roofs and the large slide away doors capture prevailing breezes up the valley. The patio, which is pulled close into a recessed cut-out in the main living space of the house, allows summer breezes across the pool to cool the house. Expansive windows and a narrow cross-section allow natural daylight to penetrate deep into the spaces and illuminate the rich and earthy palette of natural materials. The architecture created is a vehicle through which the powerful forms of the landscape craft a powerful experience of place. It is a respite from urban life, designed to bring one back to the basics: a love of family, land, food, and of course, wine.

A quiet place to unwind at the end of the day was the top priority for this Thousand Oaks client. Soothing plum accents against crisp white bedding. Custom built double-sided barn door that serves as dual purpose, first and foremost as a layered headboard, and seconds as a privacy door simply by sliding across to the vanity area. The client inherited the small side table, which we painted in a charcoal black and now serves as a nightstand. The bathroom vanity was raised 6 inches and custom arched toe kicks were added. Crafted with a vision to etch a prudent home, tracing a simple and economical layout, Motif Architects designed ‘Lakeway Lease House’, a humble home for enjoyment-year round. A play of overlapping roofs stirs a unique statement in the neighborhood of Apache Shores. The foremost feature was to build a cost-efferent lease home, where the criterion was to generate revenue. It was achieved by creating common plumbing “wet” walls, minimizing unoccupied attic storage spaces and shafts, and conveniently weaving a simplified framed layout. The plans outline a functional scheme of arrangement. The exterior façade showcases a combination of board and batten along with ship lap fiber cement board. Composite roofing stylized in a staggered form at varying levels adds a dynamic expression to the house. Awnings are provided over every door with tongue-and-groove wood soffits.

Wild View Farm includes a new “Forever home” (we deconstructed an existing house with a 90% landfill diversion rate), and enhancements to several working barns. The 80 acre site was an original homestead farm from the 1890’s. Both its buildings and soil had become severely degraded. The owners are working to holistically restore this property and make it a model of modern regenerative farming. They are planting hundreds of trees, re-introducing livestock and working with Dryland Agroecology Research and High Plains Permaculture to restore the soil. The -51 HERS rated home is not just energy-efficient - it’s a model of “Regenerative design”. The deep green house design included multiple challenges – foremost was how to create a Passive Solar design that also took full advantage of the massive views to the West. We solved it with an L shaped building that optimized passive and active solar strategies on the south face, then actively protected the western facade with a giant covered porch and tuned glazing. The home’s leading-edge energy package includes a Ground source heat pump, a large roof-mounted solar PV array, battery back-up, EV chargers, and Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV), Energy Star Appliances and windows, a robust foam insulation shell and LED lighting. We also endeavored to craft a modern day interpretation of the farmhouse typology, with a low-slung simple gable-roofed form that would feel like it’s always been there. The exterior material palette of limestone, cementitious stucco and heavy timber gives it a rich Colorado Modern Farmhouse feel. The home is full of custom details like walls of vaulted glass to capture the sweeping mountain views, an AI Smart Home control system, a sleeping loft for kids and guests, a hard-working Butler’s Pantry, a gourmet outdoor kitchen, a pool & spa, a cozy office nook for reading, and a lovely built-in bench for morning coffee. The winding walkway (complete with stone stairways) from the house down to the lake is decorated with large boulders and perennial plants for both beauty and erosion control. Showcased in this project is a “Lakeside Landscape” created for a homeowner who purchased an old vacant lot on the banks of Lake Erie on the near west side of Cleveland. The lot was attractive given its location and potential for lakeside access, yet it presented some major challenges. First and foremost, the lay of the land was unfavorable, dropping 50 feet from the front of the house to the lake in just 175 linear feet. Erosion wasn’t the only concern in this case, as the space also needed to be functional. The result was over 1300 tons of locally-mined sandstone top rock and a strategic placement of each boulder to create a winding grass path to the lake and tiered entertaining spaces. One such space serves as a natural bluestone patio for unparalleled views of the lake, complimented by a decorative fountain sculpted by a local artist. The lower space is used as a secluded fire pit carved into the hillside with a bench overlooking the western horizon to catch the spectacular Lake Erie sunsets. The addition of 34 natural sandstone steps from the top patio to a reinforced concrete break wall meanders through a landscape with over 625 flowering trees, shrubs and perennials. Below the surface is a series of drains, tile, low-voltage lighting, and irrigation, all designed to maximize every square foot of usable space. What began as a cliff ended as a unique lakeside living space used for recreation, entertaining, and more importantly, as a retreat for family and friends alike.
