This spacious home in the foothills of Northwest Corvallis is an absolute beauty! Remodeling the kitchen and laundry room greatly expanded the possibilities for storage and organization and created an entirely fresh appeal.
The ceilings throughout the home had been paneled with warm, gorgeous wood. To build on that detail, we incorporated hints of wood in the new design at the range hood, sink cabinetry, desktop, and open shelving. There was also existing tile flooring that the homeowner wanted to keep, so light, neutral cabinetry was the perfect complement to the wood and tile, brightening the entire space. The two-tiered wrap around peninsula offers an abundance of room for guests to sit and eat or visit with those in the kitchen. It also serves to delineate the kitchen from the living area.
Although the kitchen’s footprint wasn’t altered, we did move the stove to the back wall. This change optimized functionality and set a dramatic focal point. The professional-style, six-burner gas range is sure to be a high-performer when cooking any meal. On special occasions when numerous dishes are on the menu, the convection microwave will come in handy, operating as a second oven or a microwave.
The under-counter dish drawers provide efficient storage and eliminate the need for pulling serving pieces down from an overhead cabinet. A custom pegboard organizer holds each dish securely in place to prevent shifting when the drawer is opened and closed. Conveniently located near the dishwasher, it makes unloading a breeze! Open shelving provides additional room to keep items close at hand and adds to the cottage feel. These homeowners have chosen to shelve small appliances in their newly remodeled laundry room that’s directly off the kitchen. In this way, it serves as a second “pantry.”
Adjacent to the kitchen, there is now a beautiful workspace. Its glass upper cabinets are a fantastic place to display pottery, dishware, and cookbooks. We borrowed a few inches on the end of a bordering kitchen cabinet to construct a message center and mail sorting console. What a clever way to create a spot for pending paperwork while keeping it tucked behind the cabinet doors.

This client had just moved into a property in York and having pulled back the old carpet revealed a lovely old period Victorian tiled floor she didn’t know existed when she bought the house!
I went over at the beginning of this year to survey the floor and could see that fortunately, no glue or carpet grips had been used to secure the carpet; additionally the floor was in good physical condition considering its age with no cracks or loose tiles. The tiles were however very dusty and dirty with ingrained dirt and so had probably been covered with carpet for a very long time. The hallway was quite dark I’m afraid with little natural light so apologies for the photographs.
With old houses like this you never know what you are going to find so whilst I was there surveying the floor, I took some moisture readings with a damp meter on the floors and walls. The readings came back low so no sign of damp which was a relief to the owner.
We agreed a price for the work, and I arranged to come back the following week.
I must admit I do like York, its steeped in history and famous for its Cathedral and Viking museum. The houses in the city have loads of character and period features like this floor are quite common.
I deep cleaned the floor with a strong 1:3 dilution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean worked in with a black scrubbing pad fitted to a rotary machine. Initially the solution was left to soak into the tile before being agitated by the machine. The soil was then rinsed off with minimal water and then extracted with a wet vacuum.
I followed this up with an Acid Wash using Tile Doctor Acid Gel to further clean up the tiles and help inhibit any potential efflorescent salt issues which are common in floors of this age due to the absence of the damp proof membrane. The floor was given a further rinse and extraction and allowed to dry out fully overnight. I needed the floor to be dry for the next day so it could be sealed.
I came back the next day and started by taking more damp readings which showed similar readings to the day before. Given the low readings I was able to move straight onto sealing which was done using four coats of Tile Doctor Seal and Go. This product works really well on old Victorian Tiles like these and being water based it doesn’t leave a smell as it dries.
Once the final coat of sealer had dried there was a significant improvement in the appearance of the floor which was much appreciated by client who was very happy with the end result.
For aftercare I recommended the use of Tile Doctor Neutral Tile Cleaner to maintain the floor, it has a nice fresh smell and can be used regularly due to its pH neutral nature which won’t prematurely erode the sealer like stronger bleach based cleaners.

Modern Minimalism Meets Everyday Life in Lancaster
Project Overview
Challenge:
With three children, two cats, and frequent visits from friends and extended family, the homeowners needed a kitchen that could keep up with their active household. As certified foster parents, [LINK TO THIS MONTH’S BLOG POST] they also required secure, lockable storage for knives, alcohol, and cleaning supplies. While functional, the existing kitchen felt dated and lacked efficiency. Their vision: clean countertops, hidden appliances, and durable finishes with timeless appeal.
Design:
Lenton Company created a tailored plan that honored the family’s budget and priorities. The U-shaped layout was preserved, but the stove was moved to the opposite wall to improve flow for two active cooks. Dark green shaker-style base cabinets were paired with white uppers and quartz countertops, delivering a high-contrast, classic look. Water resistant, wood-tone flooring was installed throughout the kitchen and main living areas for durability and cohesion. The drop ceiling remained due to ductwork but was refinished for a fresh appearance.
Build:
Construction began with a full demo and was carefully sectioned off to maintain a safe environment. The remodel included all-new appliances, lighting, cabinetry, and finishes. Thoughtful features like soft-close drawers, oversized pull-out trash and recycling, locking storage, a hidden microwave, and dedicated space for a toaster oven contributed to a clutter-free and functional kitchen. Under-cabinet lighting, overhead fixtures, and a half lazy Susan further enhanced efficiency and usability.
Reveal:
In the words of our homeowners, “Working with Lenton Company made the process feel seamless and turnkey. Having the designer, project manager, and build team all under one roof was a huge advantage. Our designer really listened to our needs and design preferences, offering thoughtful layout options and guiding us toward choices that fit our style and budget. The build team was efficient, professional, and kept everything on track—and tidy! After the renovation, we knew without a doubt we had made the right decision.”

What surprises people most when entering and walking on the glowing white surface in this particular Private Residence (Williamsburg, VA) is when they find out they are walking on a sea of glass! Yes, GLASS! Not marble, not granite, but GLASS! Nathan Allan has created a very fresh, unique flooring surface, which is smooth to touch on the majority of the glass surface, yet has an almost invisible safety finish permanently embedded in the glass surface.
THE GLASS
Nathan Allan’s Glass Flooring incorporates features which are visually stunning, while also providing a safety finish which provides comfort to everyone walking on the glass. Our Sandstone texture is forged into the bottom surface of the glass, while our exclusive Glass Sandpaper safety finish is fused onto the walking surface. To enhance all features, we added a bright, sparkling, White Metallic color finish throughout each flooring panel.
SPECIFICATIONS
Each Glass Flooring panel is produced in 1/2″ (12mm) thick, Low Iron, tempered safety glass. Tempered glass provides added strength, insuring that the Glass Flooring can accept a heavy load. Panels vary in size and dimension, with most panels measured at a block size of 5’0 x 6’0 (1500mm x 1800mm). Perimeter Edge panels were carved and shaped to fit tightly against the curved walls. Glass Sandpaper, ASTM tested in labs with the highest slip-coefficient safety ratings, is fused onto the walking surface, to provide a very comfortable and effective safety feature.
Flooring Glass Details:
1/2″ (12mm) thick, Low iron tempered safety glass
Flat Polished Edges
Glass Sandpaper on walking surface
Sandstone texture on bottom surface
White Metallic color finish on bottom surface
Panels sizes up to 5’0 x 6’0
Approximately 800 square feet of glass flooring
Perimeter panels shape cut to fit
Almost overshadowed by the spectacular flooring is a 1.5” thick, Heavy Glasstop, Crescent shaped, with Nathan Allan’s Rocky Mountain texture.
DESIGN
A White Sea of Glass flooring is the finished result of combining a light Sandstone texture on the bottom glass surface, with the added touch of a sparkling White Metallic color finish. Combined with our Glass Sandpaper safety finish, and the natural and artificial light sources, our Glass Flooring shimmers within the entire entrance space.
INSTALLATION
Using very important installation techniques, Nathan Allan worked hand in hand with great team of professionals: Vicki Bristow, designer, W. M. Jordan Company, GC, and Pompei Inc, glass flooring installer. Templates were produced for all perimeter edge panels, and every shaped panel. All flooring panels are secured to the substrate with special adhesives, and joints are filled with matching color sealants.
“A beautiful project is always enhanced when working with quality, prestigious builders, and talented trade’s people. The tight organization and open communication by all the team members contributed greatly to a project proceeding seamlessly, with the incredible visual results to prove it.” Barry Allan – Director

For those looking to upgrade their bedroom or living room, area rugs come in a range of styles and materials to suit various tastes and needs. Hand-tufted and hand-knotted rugs offer timeless elegance with their intricate designs and luxurious textures. These handcrafted options are perfect for adding a sophisticated element to your bedroom decor or living room. Hand-loomed rugs, with their artisanal craftsmanship, bring a unique, personalized touch to any room, making them ideal for those who appreciate detailed, bespoke designs.
If you prefer a modern aesthetic, machine-woven rugs provide a practical yet stylish solution. These rugs are available in a variety of patterns and colors and are designed to withstand high foot traffic, making them a durable choice for busy areas. For a more contemporary feel, flat-woven rugs, such as kilims, offer a reversible design that fits seamlessly with both modern and traditional decor themes.
For added comfort and style, consider shag or flokati rugs. Their plush, long fibers create a cozy atmosphere and are perfect for a living room where comfort is key. These rugs are especially suited for spaces where you want to relax and enjoy a soft, inviting texture underfoot.
When it comes to functionality, choosing a rug that is machine washable, stain-resistant, and water-resistant ensures longevity and ease of maintenance. These practical features are essential for busy households and high-traffic areas, helping to keep your rug looking fresh and clean. Non-slip and adhesive backings are also crucial, especially on hardwood floors, to prevent slips and ensure the rug remains securely in place.
For those looking to make a statement, large rugs for the living room or oversized area rugs, such as 8x10 options, can define and elevate your space. Large carpets provide substantial coverage and can anchor a room, adding a sense of scale and sophistication. Whether you opt for a big rug for the living room or a huge carpet to cover a larger area, these choices offer versatility and style.
In addition to large living room rugs, consider rug sets or personalized options to further enhance your decor. Custom rugs with features like fringe or organic textures can add a distinctive element to your space, reflecting your personal style and complementing your existing decor.
To ensure your rug enhances the overall look of your room, consider how it aligns with your decor theme. Contemporary and modern designs offer sleek, clean lines and bold patterns, while traditional and mid-century modern styles provide a more classic or retro look. Transitional rugs blend elements from both traditional and modern styles, offering flexibility and a timeless appeal.
In summary, selecting the right area rug involves balancing aesthetics with practicality. From luxurious hand-tufted and hand-knotted designs to functional machine-woven and flat-woven options, the perfect rug can elevate your living room, bedroom, or kitchen into a stylish and comfortable haven. Explore the vast array of choices available, including large living room rugs and personalized designs, to find the ideal rug that meets both your decorative and functional needs.
