The rear entrance from the courtyard is flanked by two Macedonia limestone columns. The columns are solid stone. They are load bearing supporting the archways. The style is Tuscan with entasis. Entasis is "the intentional slight convex curving of the vertical profile of a tapered column; used to overcome the optical illusion of concavity that characterizes straight-sided columns." To move or not to move — that is the question many homeowners are asking as they consider whether to upgrade their existing residence or pack up and find a new one. It was that exact question that was discussed by this homeowner as they evaluated their traditional two-story home in Fontana. Built in 2001, this cedar-sided 3,500-square-foot home features five bedrooms, three-and-a-half baths, and a full basement. During renovation projects like the these, we have the ability and flexibility to work across many different architectural styles. Our main focus is to work with clients to get a good sense of their personal style, what features they’re most attracted to, and balance those with the fundamental principles of good design – function, balance, proportion and flow – to make sure that they have a unified vision for the home. After extensive demolition of the kitchen, family room, master bath, laundry room, powder room, master bedroom and adjacent hallways, we began transforming the space into one that the family could truly utilize in an all new way. In addition to installing structural beams to support the second floor loads and pushing out two non-structural walls in order to enlarge the master bath, the renovation team installed a new kitchen island, added quartz countertops in the kitchen and master bath plus installed new Kohler sinks, toilets and accessories in the kitchen and bath. Underscoring the belief that an open great room should offer a welcoming environment, the renovated space now offers an inviting haven for the homeowners and their guests. The open family room boasts a new gas fireplace complete with custom surround, mantel and bookcases. Underfoot, hardwood floors featuring American walnut add warmth to the home’s interior. Continuity is achieved throughout the first floor by accenting posts, handrails and spindles all with the same rich walnut.

VERSAILLES DE LUXE The Versailles castle is famous for its proportions, composition and harmony - aspects which are also characteristic of the new VERSAILLES DE LUXE from LEICHT. The solid pillar with the plastic Akanthus-Motive in the capital is the fundamental and visually dominating element. It is used for kitchen furniture and as a feature of the interior fittings. The matt lacquer in crème antique patinée decisively determines the noble style and expression of the kitchen.

APARTMENT | BA Gray, wood and blue are the main colors in the apartment redesign located in Copacaba in Rio de Janeiro. The owner wanted to create a modern atmosphere and have a large room with access to the kitchen, but without it being an open concept completely. Our solution was to create large wooden sliding doors that allowed immediate access to the main living and dining area as well as access to the kitchen. This helped achieve a fully-integrated look between the two spaces, yet can both be sealed off to create a more intimate and private space. The color palette matches with the personality of the owner, and blue was the fundamental color. We chose blue to add a dynamic life to the space as well as tie into the existing art pieces the owner already had.

The architecture of the Karoo Wilderness Center is a result of a thorough process of investigation into the origins and character of the Karoo landscape and the flora and fauna that result from its particular qualities. The tectonic events that produced the specific topography of the site, trajectories of water runoff, wind movement, soil composition, and effects of plant and animal species on the landscape have converged to create the conditions of the site chosen for the Center. Each of these factors have in turn been subject to the impact of human inhabitation and vernacular building practices, amplified in recent generations to a harmful degree by shortsighted agricultural strategies and their associated effects of overgrazing, water over-manipulation and erosion. Fundamental to the architectural response is the premise that the human species is an inherent part of the conditions that comprise and affect the landscape. The significance of the Center, enhanced and informed by the activities that occur within and as an extension of it, lies in the co-dependence of the Center and the ecosystem as inherently bound entities. The architecture of the Center is intended to make evident the natural processes of the Karoo and establish a new precedent for building within and through an ecosystem defined by dynamic flux.

The fundamental feature of the home is its biophilic design, connecting nature throughout the indoor and outdoor spaces, which was created for the wellbeing of the owners, but with all the conveniences of today’s modern living. The classic design of the exterior and contrasting colors give the appearance of clean lines and refined details. Large windows and doors provide views of the wooded lot, opening the home directly to outdoor living spaces.

This passive solar cottage included energy efficiency and sustainability strategies across all divisions of construction, from the LEED concrete mixes to the custom designed bio-mass wood boiler hydronic heating system. The clients – a forestry consultant and an energy policy advocate – drove the design and construction of the project to be an extremely unique and functional building. Fundamentals of passive solar design and sun-tempering were the basis around which the major project parameters were established. The active space conditioning and domestic hot water is provided by a visible-flame architectural wood boiler, backed up by a bio-diesel boiler. Other features include decorative polished concrete slab floors; locally-sourced hybrid timber frame components; custom sawn northern white cedar beveled siding; oak stair treads sourced from the property; heart pine flooring for Fall River mill timbers; super-insulated assemblies with cellulose and insulated sheathing; and reclaimed, restored lighting and plumbing fixtures.
