It takes a lot to properly design and build a sauna that nails the important fundamentals where it performs properly and provides a great user experience. These customers will enjoy the great heat pocket on the upper bench while enjoying a view of the lake.

VERSAILLES DE LUXE
The Versailles castle is famous for its proportions, composition and harmony - aspects which are also characteristic of the new VERSAILLES DE LUXE from LEICHT. The solid pillar with the plastic Akanthus-Motive in the capital is the fundamental and visually dominating element. It is used for kitchen furniture and as a feature of the interior fittings. The matt lacquer in crème antique patinée decisively determines the noble style and expression of the kitchen.

The design intent of this kitchen space was to pay homage to Brutalist architecture, while still including
contemporary design elements, in this compact modern infill project. The use of clean lines and stark geometric shapes was fundamental, in order to evoke the modularity and functionality that Brutalism is known for. Preserving the feeling of a livable, inviting space was also very important, as the kitchen is open to the rest of the main floor living area.
A combination of materials, in both warm and cool tones, helped to integrate the rougher construction materials traditionally found in Brutalist architecture. The colour and texture of the built-up concrete counter on the island contrasts beautifully with that of the cantilevered walnut butcher block.
The subtlety of the glass base in the seating area allows the lines of the countertops to really be the focus of the room.

A staircase lives two lives. One as an architectural feature, and another as a functional piece of the home. This transitional design handles both with ease. Natural white oak treads flow from the hardwood floors below, making the staircase feel fundamental to the home rather than inserted into it. White painted risers and pin balusters keep the composition light and open, letting natural light move freely through the space.
The glossy black handrail and newels add an edge to the design, creating definition against the white paint and warm oak elements. Tying it together, the over-the-post balustrade creates a flowing line that draws the eye up. A staircase that doesn't demand attention, but rewards those who pause to notice it.

To move or not to move — that is the question many homeowners are asking as they consider whether to upgrade their existing residence or pack up and find a new one. It was that exact question that was discussed by this homeowner as they evaluated their traditional two-story home in Fontana. Built in 2001, this cedar-sided 3,500-square-foot home features five bedrooms, three-and-a-half baths, and a full basement.
During renovation projects like the these, we have the ability and flexibility to work across many different architectural styles. Our main focus is to work with clients to get a good sense of their personal style, what features they’re most attracted to, and balance those with the fundamental principles of good design – function, balance, proportion and flow – to make sure that they have a unified vision for the home.
After extensive demolition of the kitchen, family room, master bath, laundry room, powder room, master bedroom and adjacent hallways, we began transforming the space into one that the family could truly utilize in an all new way. In addition to installing structural beams to support the second floor loads and pushing out two non-structural walls in order to enlarge the master bath, the renovation team installed a new kitchen island, added quartz countertops in the kitchen and master bath plus installed new Kohler sinks, toilets and accessories in the kitchen and bath.
Underscoring the belief that an open great room should offer a welcoming environment, the renovated space now offers an inviting haven for the homeowners and their guests. The open family room boasts a new gas fireplace complete with custom surround, mantel and bookcases. Underfoot, hardwood floors featuring American walnut add warmth to the home’s interior.
Continuity is achieved throughout the first floor by accenting posts, handrails and spindles all with the same rich walnut.

m.o.r.e. Cabin
The paradigmatic North American cottage is romanticized as a wilderness log cabin. Nonetheless, typical cottages are “woodsy” versions of suburban homes with every modern convenience. These buildings sustain the myth that appearing to be one with the land equates to a reduced impact on the environment.
The m.o.r.e. Cabin inverts this idea through a separation from the landscape that is more sustainably constructed than other cottages. This unravelling of eco-fictions is not cynical, but optimistic: while organic environments are being degraded, what remains can be engaged more responsibly.
To this end, m.o.r.e. Cabin touches the land lightly through:
- Interpreting the law creatively to uphold its principles.
- Reducing foundation size through a steel mast.
- Low-waste cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure.
- Achieving greater tensile strength through a “folded” structure.
- Off-grid power and high-efficiency heating.
- Creating a home for endangered bats.
Interpreting the Law with Finesse
Zoning rules required a 100-foot (30-metre) setback from the lake. A cliff face at that 100-foot mark was incorporated into the design, whereas conventional construction approaches would entail blasting.
To minimize harm to the hillside and forest, a zoning variance was obtained to allow the front of m.o.r.e. Cabin to hover above, rather than sit on, the 100-foot (30-metre) mark.
The Mast
The technical solution to the environmental issue involved a single concrete footing and a steel “mast” placed within the required setback.
Avoiding a conventional large foundation preserved the watershed and prevented erosion, as did elevating the construction zone. Use of carbon-intensive concrete was also reduced for a lower carbon footprint.
m.o.r.e. Than One Way to Skin a Home
m.o.r.e. Cabin is built with suitably-sourced CLT panels and glulam beams.
The CLT was milled offsite then hoisted into place, avoiding damage to the landscape by the maneuvering of construction machinery.
Cabin-as-Beam
m.o.r.e. Cabin’s environmental considerations yielded structural innovation. Our challenge became to develop a structural strategy using cantilevered CLT panels as a response to the zoning variance that we obtained; CLT is fundamentally deployed in vertical/compressive sections, not horizontally in tension.
Conventional 5-ply CLT is too heavy to support itself over longer spans. The solution used thinner 3-ply CLT, with structural capacity ensured through “folding” (just like paper gains strength when folded).
Off-Grid
The home is solar-powered.
The elevated cottage catches more breezes and has excellent cross-ventilation. Heat is provided by a high-efficiency “green carbon” wood stove. Good R-value and thermal comfort are provided by CLT’s mass, and precise joinery provides air-tightness.
Inviting Over the Neighbours
One goal of the home was to create extensive lodging for endangered brown bats. Bat pods were integrated into the mast to provide safety from climbing predators and a clear flight path to the lake.
*“m.o.r.e.” stands for the clients’ grandmothers’ names; all of whom did more with less — and gracefully so.

Drawing inspiration from the Mediterranean climate and bold architecture of the home, a garden exhibiting strength and simplicity was envisioned. A highly geometric design was developed for the site that utilizes bold forms and strong architectural lines to give structure and organization to the garden. Simple, honest materials such as concrete, wood, gravel and stone are fundamental components of the design. Decomposed granite is utilized to create walkways and a circular gathering space, providing a casual feel and providing balance to the strong forms of the garden. Stone display terraces in back contribute to the sculptural layout of the garden, while providing space for the owner’s collection of garden art.

Warm, sandy woods, espresso tones, and light plush fabrics come together exquisitely in this open and bright living room. Our goal was to give our clients a luxurious but relaxed style which is why we introduced light earth tones and pale blues.
Clean lines and symmetry are the fundamental elements of this design, so it was important to add in the right amount of texture. With the right textiles, warm organic elements, and artisanal lighting and decor, we created the home of our client's dreams.

In the Candice Tells All episode, ‘The Art of Balance’, design expert Candice Olson uses fundamental design principles to inject balance and symmetry - transforming an awkward living room into a beautiful and relaxing space with a Séura Entertainment TV Mirror as the centerpiece of the design.
In this episode, Candice finds the perfect solution to balance technology and design with a Séura Entertainment TV Mirror to create a gathering space, and a relaxing living room for watching TV.
The 46” LED TV provides a bright, high-performance picture when switched on, and transforms into a stunning mirror when switched off. Candice chose a warm wood frame from Séura’s Belmont collection to add a custom touch of elegance to the TV mirror. The Séura TV Mirror is installed above a fireplace and between flanking bookcases.
The TV Mirror has become a focal point in the room and complements the fireplace.
