This home was designed for a professional couple with several children, the promise of many grandchildren, and the prospect of an active retirement in the not too distant future. With a painting studio for her and a study/office for him were special requirements on top of the usual gracious living space, and formal as well as informal dining spaces. The outdoor living areas, terraces, decks, pool, and a boathouse significantly expand the space of the house and opportunities for outdoor leisure activities. The materials are rich throughout—cedar columns and roof deck, slate counters, mesquite and stone floors, and limestone walls inside and out. A small entry court and a terraced deck relate the building to the rapidly changing grade. Large steel trellises with wisteria provide shade for the deck area and block the view of a neighboring house. This house received a Merit Award from the Austin Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Featured on the cover of Southern Living, February 2000, for the National Design Award for new construction, this house exemplifies Black + Vernooy’s concept of Texas residential architecture. Our team was approached by a lovely client in early January 2022 to undertake a full home renovation project. The scope of the project initially included updating the interior of the home, with a focus on the kitchen, flooring, all the bathrooms, and the basement. We also took on the task of painting the entire interior of the house, giving it a fresh and updated look. As the project progressed, the client expressed interest in updating the exterior of the home as well. We worked with them to design and build a new deck that provided a functional and stylish space for outdoor entertaining. We also tackled the landscaping of the front and backyard of the property, creating a cohesive and inviting look that complemented the updated interior design. Throughout the project, we worked closely with the client to ensure that their vision was realized, taking care to incorporate their input and preferences into every aspect of the design. We also prioritized functionality and durability, selecting materials and finishes that would stand the test of time and provide lasting value for the homeowner. Despite the scale of the project, we were able to complete it in just four months, from day one to last one. Our team worked efficiently and effectively to ensure that every detail was taken care of, from the initial design to the final finishing touches. The end result is a stunning and functional home that the client is thrilled with. The Sky's the Limit for this little "future aviator's" bedroom.The hand painted panoramic wall and ceiling mural features a bird's eye view from an airplane window. One trick I like to use while painting with acrylic paints is to incorporate a small amount of Design 7 Seven Acrylic Glaze onto my paint palette. This is a formal living room made for conversation or to listen to the piano player (no TV in this room). The focal point is the yellow wool Greek key Dhurrie rug. Geometric sculptures and glass orbs also make a statement. Equestrian accents can be found in the horse picture and sculpture, as well as the brown leather chair. A corduroy couch, velvet & leather side chairs, silk curtains, and cashmere & sheepskin pillows are all soft to the touch and add rich texture to the room. The tall pieces (yellow flowers & victrola) are balanced by another tall piece next to the front door. The tall plant next to the front door creates a little entryway. The best part of this room is the budget. All furniture and accessories were purchased for approximately $4,000. To accomplish this, most were obtained at store outlets, on clearance, or as floor models. Wallpaper removal, painting & wood floor refinishing were an additional $1,000. The front door will be replaced soon! Also, the wall behind the horse photo may be opened up to the attic stair in the future. Treated wood decks have many choices of lumber to select from. This kiln dried treated deck is also water resistant from the factory! This allows painting or staining earlier than standard decking boards. Traditional wood balusters, with decking board top rail supported by the 4X4 posts supporting the deck makes this a strong structure for grandkids of all ages! This tree had to be kept, and allowed for future growth!
