Atherton has many large substantial homes - our clients purchased an existing home on a one acre flag-shaped lot and asked us to design a new dream home for them. The result is a new 7,000 square foot four-building complex consisting of the main house, six-car garage with two car lifts, pool house with a full one bedroom residence inside, and a separate home office /work out gym studio building. A fifty-foot swimming pool was also created with fully landscaped yards.
Given the rectangular shape of the lot, it was decided to angle the house to incoming visitors slightly so as to more dramatically present itself. The house became a classic u-shaped home but Feng Shui design principals were employed directing the placement of the pool house to better contain the energy flow on the site. The main house entry door is then aligned with a special Japanese red maple at the end of a long visual axis at the rear of the site. These angles and alignments set up everything else about the house design and layout, and views from various rooms allow you to see into virtually every space tracking movements of others in the home.
The residence is simply divided into two wings of public use, kitchen and family room, and the other wing of bedrooms, connected by the living and dining great room. Function drove the exterior form of windows and solid walls with a line of clerestory windows which bring light into the middle of the large home. Extensive sun shadow studies with 3D tree modeling led to the unorthodox placement of the pool to the north of the home, but tree shadow tracking showed this to be the sunniest area during the entire year.
Sustainable measures included a full 7.1kW solar photovoltaic array technically making the house off the grid, and arranged so that no panels are visible from the property. A large 16,000 gallon rainwater catchment system consisting of tanks buried below grade was installed. The home is California GreenPoint rated and also features sealed roof soffits and a sealed crawlspace without the usual venting. A whole house computer automation system with server room was installed as well. Heating and cooling utilize hot water radiant heated concrete and wood floors supplemented by heat pump generated heating and cooling.
A compound of buildings created to form balanced relationships between each other, this home is about circulation, light and a balance of form and function.

The Fells Point Passive House fulfills the aspirations of a couple dedicated to urban living, resilient design, and environmental stewardship. The development repurposes an underutilized urban lot in Baltimore’s historic Fells Point neighborhood into a home built to the Passive House standard and a separate office unified by a new private garden, as well as two income-generating rental units.
The design solution removes the roof of the former garage and warehouse and inserts a two-story ultra high-performance building into the historic shell. A deep “stoop” provides a threshold between the urban street and the private living space. The interior is organized around a core of stairwell, bathroom, and systems which further separates the private living space from the public. Monumental high efficiency triple-pane doors connect the open living space to the new courtyard garden on both levels. The super-insulated, air-tight building enclosure, together with a high efficiency mechanical system and a photovoltaic array, result in a near net-zero home. Plentiful light, natural and reclaimed materials, and outdoor connections support the owner’s conscious lifestyle.

With their children launched, our Clients were relocating to Coastal Maine and wanted to simplify their living arrangements. The resulting design was a clean lined and bright space with considerations for the coming years, including a master suite on the first floor, a workshop, and an income-generating rental unit.
On the first floor, a double height Great Room is anchored by a fireplace and includes a kitchen, dining and living room. Large windows bring in ample natural light and offer views out onto the back of the property. A master suite wing provides private space on the lower floor.
The design also features guest rooms and a guest bath on the upper level, as well as an attached workshop. A separately entered rental unit is located above the workshop and is designed to ensure full separation from the primary living space. A farmer’s porch, board and batten siding and shingles all reference traditional New England architecture.

This project was the design and delivery of a flexible and fault-tolerant main equipment closet (MEC) housing an enterprise-class infrastructure that services a 20,000 square foot home, a vibrant business, and a world-class home theater. In Boca Theater and Automation’s experience, the three cornerstones of any successful project in South Florida involve clean power, proper management of heat, and ANSI/TIA certified copper and fiber terminations; enterprise-class systems add in redundancy where it matters.
To achieve this level of performance, the MEC and all endpoints are powered by a RoseWater HUB20 system backed up by a large-scale generator. The MEC is cooled using a dedicated air conditioner with four backup 300CFM exhaust fans triggered by temperature sensors. Both systems send alerts monitoring key parameters such as heat, moisture, incoming power, battery health, and more. Every rack-mounted device can be individually rebooted using the custom-designed touch panel interface, or from sixty-four labeled buttons on the user side of the rack.
BTA designed patch bays provide professional landing points for 11.7 miles of low voltage copper and fiber runs servicing the entire campus, and each termination was tested using a Fluke DSX8000 system following extended ANSI/TIA guidelines for 10GB permalink installations.
