The Magnolia Renovation has been primarily concerned with the design of a new, highly crafted modern kitchen in a traditional home located in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle. The kitchen design relies on the creation of a very simple continuous space that is occupied by highly crafted pieces of furniture, cabinets and fittings. Materials such as steel, bronze, bamboo, stained elm, woven cattail, and sea grass are used in juxtaposition, allowing each material to benefit from adjacent contrasts in texture and color. The existing kitchen and dining room consisted of separate rooms with a dividing wall. This wall was removed to create a long, continuous, east-west space, approximately 34 feet long, with cabinets and counters along each wall. The west end of the space has glass doors and views to the Puget Sound. The east end also has glass doors, leading to a small garden space. In the center of the new kitchen/dining space, we designed two long, custom tables from reclaimed elm planks (20" wide, 2" thick). The first table is a working kitchen island, the second table is the dining table. Both tables have custom blued-steel bases with laser-cut bronze overlay. We also designed custom stools with blued-steel bases and woven cattail rush seats. The lighting of the kitchen consists of 15 small, candle-like fixtures arranged in a random array with custom steel brackets. The cabinets are custom designed, with bleached Alaskan yellow cedar frames and bamboo panels. The counters are a dark limestone with a beautiful stone mosaic backsplash with a bamboo-like pattern. Adjacent to the backsplash is a long horizontal window with a “beargrass” resin panel placed on the interior side of the window. Inspiration for a mid-sized transitional dark wood floor dining room remodel in New Orleans with white walls

This living/dining room combined is open and airy to the sliding glass doors leading to the covered patio. A great place to entertain, yet relax and enjoy the beauty.

This classic loft building features the Flatiron Residence, features large windows and soaring ceiling heights. This was a perfect project for a young growing family who wanted to create a luminous, spacious home. They combined two floors and opted for a sun drenched, generous layout designed to maintain as much openness as possible throughout the residence. The overall feeling is fresh, contemporary and artisan. Their custom kitchen anchors the main floor’s loft space while the dining, living and family rooms flow together. The rooms are separated only by a full height woven-leather sliding panel system. This was integrated to give the owners flexibility in open or closed doors depending on how they’re occupying the space on any given day. The stair’s sculptural bronze and white oak finishes quietly integrate the two floors, with cove lighting and an artisan glass chandelier illuminating the area. Our poster project for The Three P's, this small midcentury home south of campus has great bones but lacked vibrancy - a je ne sais quoi that the clients were searching to savoir once and for all. SYI worked with them to nail down a design direction and furniture plan, and they decided to invest in the big-impact items first: built-ins and lighting and a fresh paint job that included a beautiful deep blue-green line around the windows. The vintage rug was an Etsy score at an awesome price, but only after the client spent months scouring options and sources online that matched the vision and dimensions of the plan. A good year later, the West Elm sofa went on sale, so the client took advantage; some time after that, they painted the kitchen, created the drop zone / bench area, and rounded out the room with occasional tables and accessories. This open concept breakfast area off the kitchen is the hardest working room in the house. The show stopping sea glass chandelier sparkles as light streams in the windows overlooking the pool area. A pair of original abstract artwork in blue and white adorn the space. We mixed Sunbrella outdoor fabric chairs with leather seats that can be wiped off when the inevitable spill happens. An outdoor rug hides crumbs while standing up the wet feet tracking in from the adjacent patio and pool area.

Photography-Hedrich Blessing Fairbanks Residence: The combination of three apartments was done to create one free flowing living space with over 4,800 SF connecting the 39th and 40th floors, with amazing views of Chicago. A new glass stair replaces an existing wood stair in the penthouse residence, and allows light to pour deep into the home and creates a calming void in the space. The glass is used as the primary structural material and only stainless steel is used for connection clips. The glass assembly of both tread and wall includes 3 layers of ½” lo-iron tempered glass with an AVB interlayer and hinge-like connector under tread and at connection to concrete to allow for rotation or vertical movement of up to one inch. The fireplace module incorporates the minimal gas and stone fireplace with hidden cabinet doors, an HVAC fan coil, and the LCD TV. The full height absolute-white kitchen wall also has a large working island in white oak that ends in an eat-in table. Solid wide plank hickory is used on the floor to compliment the rift-cut white oak cabinetry in the fireplace and kitchen, the tower’s concrete structure, and the plaster walls throughout painted in 4 different whites.

Moments of turquoise and aqua blue, sprinkled throughout this living room, create the perfect space to sit, relax or socialize. Four chairs covered in a graphic, ivory and beige geometric print surround a black resin and metallic gold cocktail table. Side tables hold turquoise lamps with gold detailing. The ivory chenille sofa with gold velvet welt grounds the open layout. Graphic pillows in shades of blues and greens add color to the neutral setting. Behind the sofa is a traditional consoled topped with glass and gold hurricanes and celadon stacked bowls. Finishing the look is a sisal rug adding just the right amount of texture.
