The site descends from the street and is privileged with dynamic natural views toward a creek below and beyond. To incorporate the existing landscape into the daily life of the residents, the house steps down to the natural topography. A continuous and jogging retaining wall from outside to inside embeds the structure below natural grade at the front with flush transitions at its rear facade. All indoor spaces open up to a central courtyard which terraces down to the tree canopy, creating a readily visible and occupiable transitional space between man-made and nature. The courtyard scheme is simplified by two wings representing common and private zones - connected by a glass dining “bridge." This transparent volume also visually connects the front yard to the courtyard, clearing for the prospect view, while maintaining a subdued street presence. The staircase acts as a vertical “knuckle,” mediating shifting wing angles while contrasting the predominant horizontality of the house. Crips materiality and detailing, deep roof overhangs, and the one-and-half story wall at the rear further enhance the connection between outdoors and indoors, providing nuanced natural lighting throughout and a meaningful framed procession through the property. The patio off of the garage is covered with a slide wire awning that provides shade in the summer and sun in the winter. An outdoor room hosts dining and leisure and extends the living space of the home. The patio is paved with concrete permeable pavers which allows proper drainage on this small lot.

Transitions...The function, access and aesthetics ar now incorporated. The existing charm of the original garage landing was kept. The expanded concrete landing allowed for a wider step access onto the new deck. The renovated sun porch entry is now function and attractive!

The lake house is nestled in a serene wooded setting, surrounded by tall trees that provide a natural canopy of shade. The exterior of the house features warm, earthy colors that blend in seamlessly with the natural surroundings, creating a tranquil and inviting atmosphere. The use of natural materials such as wood, stone, and brick adds to the rustic charm of the house. A spacious front porch welcomes guests, with comfortable seating areas perfect for enjoying the peaceful surroundings. The back of the house features a large deck and patio area with ample space for outdoor entertaining, complete with a grill and plenty of seating. The pièce de résistance, however, is the private dock that extends out into the sparkling waters of the lake, providing the perfect spot for fishing, boating, or just relaxing and enjoying the view.
