If you've ever taken a road trip that meandered through the countryside you've probably noticed that simple house sitting at the end of a dirt road. It looks cozy and has a rustic charm that reminds us of a more straightforward way of living. A warm, cozy fire on a chilly fall evening, or sitting on the farmers' porch enjoying a cold iced tea at the end of a long summer day. Today, as more of us are beginning to appreciate the warmth of that rustic setting, one design style is rapidly growing in popularity. Known as “Modern Rustic” it provides homeowners with the warm, natural, and inviting style of that rural farmhouse, along with the clean, simple lines of modern design. One of the characteristics of the Modern Rustic design aesthetic is that is evidenced by both the physical rooms, as well as in individual pieces of furniture within the space. The primary design components of this style are the warmth of natural materials and the texture those material provide. Exposed wood and stone or brick are often used to add character and the appearance of warmth to the aesthetic. These are textures typically found in old hand-built country homes, as these were the building materials available at the time. Woolen objects like rugs and blankets are used as décor to add warm textures to the space. Modern Rustic also uses smooth textures, for example, counter and chairs surfaces and cabinetry. These are the textures that provide the clean and modern feel. Shape and architecture play a significant role in the overall design environment. Natural elements like stones and wood are typically rough and asymmetrical in their natural state. A Modern Rustic design combines these natural shapes like tree branches, antlers and river stones with rectangles, spheres, and sharp angles. Think Cathedral ceilings, large prominent stairs, huge natural beams, and beautiful stone fireplaces. I am extremely proud of this project and we finish right on time before the couple get married. This Bocce Court & Horseshoe Pit installation is our featured project of the month, and this family operated winery at Dancing Apache Ranch wanted activity / game play features for a special events wine tasting room, as well as one for a more private “family” gathering space. Their choices were bocce & horseshoes, and we couldn’t have been happier to create this for them! We first had to meet with the client to select the location for each amenity, and after a little brainstorming and checking out our other bocce & horseshoe courts online, we think we nailed it…the bocce court selection was directly adjacent to this cool outdoor tasting room. The view from the bocce court is the barn-converted tasting room on one side, and the vineyards on the other….PERFECT! If that wasn’t enough, we also installed new matching-themed landscape lighting with bronze fixtures and a programmable timer. Now the competition starts with wine and goes on into the dark… Next came the locale for the family horseshoe pits, and the natural spot was right next to the most popular family gathering area. Where you ask?...why, the kitchen / outdoor dining ramada of course! This added sport amenity really brings the family together, both young and old, and the simple style ties that ranch theme destination together full circle. With a little sod removal and some grading, this completed install was a total ringer, with everybody a winner. Adding sport amenities to gathering spaces is a great way to bring family and friends together. From the bocce court at the tasting room to the horseshoe pits at the ramada, the installation of these two activities included all the finishing touches. One look at the bocce court proves why we are the top bocce court builder in Arizona! As with every project, we provided our “like it was my house” service. Call us for your very own creation!

Light dances up the flagstone steps of this sunken den and disperses light beautifully across the honey stained oak flooring. The pivoting alder entry door prepares visitors for the decidedly modern aesthetic awaiting them. Stained alder trim punctuates the ivory ceiling and walls. The light walls provide a warm backdrop for a contemporary artwork in shades of almond and taupe hanging near the black baby grand piano. Capping the den in fine fashion is a stained ceiling detail in an ever-growing square pattern. An acacia root ball sits on the floor alongside a lounge chair and ottoman dressed in rust chenille. The fireplace an Ortal Space Creator 120 is surrounded in cream concrete and serves to divide the den from the dining area while allowing light to filter through. A set of three glazed vases in shades of amber, chartreuse and dark olive stands on the hearth. A faux fur throw pillow is tucked into a side chair stained dark walnut and upholstered in tone on tone stripes.

This growing family needed more crawl space, but love their antique Craftsman style home. An addition expanded the kitchen, made space for a primary bedroom and 2nd bath on the upper level. The large finished basement provides plenty of space for play and for gathering, as well as a bedroom and bath for visiting family and friends. This home was designed to be lived-in and well-loved, honoring the warmth and comfort of its original 1920s style.

This family of 5 was quickly out-growing their 1,220sf ranch home on a beautiful corner lot. Rather than adding a 2nd floor, the decision was made to extend the existing ranch plan into the back yard, adding a new 2-car garage below the new space - for a new total of 2,520sf. With a previous addition of a 1-car garage and a small kitchen removed, a large addition was added for Master Bedroom Suite, a 4th bedroom, hall bath, and a completely remodeled living, dining and new Kitchen, open to large new Family Room. The new lower level includes the new Garage and Mudroom. The existing fireplace and chimney remain - with beautifully exposed brick. The homeowners love contemporary design, and finished the home with a gorgeous mix of color, pattern and materials. The project was completed in 2011. Unfortunately, 2 years later, they suffered a massive house fire. The house was then rebuilt again, using the same plans and finishes as the original build, adding only a secondary laundry closet on the main level.

This photo was taken four years after completion of the landscaping. Four years ago, we renovated this desolate, weedy front yard by creating terraces with beatiful stone retaining walls. Then we added colorful, drought tolerant plants that grow so well in San Francisco's Mediterranean climate. We installed drip irrigation and concealed it with attractive ginger rock pebble mulch.
