Reconstruction of old camp at water's edge. This project was a Guest House for a long time Battle Associates Client. Smaller, smaller, smaller the owners kept saying about the guest cottage right on the water's edge. The result was an intimate, almost diminutive, two bedroom cottage for extended family visitors. The Modern Z Sliding Barn Door combines modern with tradition. The simple construction and popular Z design echoes barn doors of the past. The door is built with a smooth panel in the core carefully built into the frame. The rails and stiles are constructed of engineered alder to prevent warping and limit movement in the wood. The Modern Z Barn Door can be used at any location in the home. It is popular in part with transitional or contemporary designs as the smooth panel lessens the distraction of the standard Z Sliding Barn Door. The door itself is made with mortise and tenon joinery, along with engineered alder rails and stiles to ensure the doors longevity. The bottom comes grooved out for the floor guide. This barn door is complementary to any of our barn door hardware. Customization for the barn door comes with the finish color chosen. While a painted and waxed finish gives the door a more modern or contemporary finish that fits well with clean lines and simple decor, a stained finish can add a taste of rustic or vintage to the home. Four doors with square cut outs play off the adjacent wall of full height double stacked flat panel cherry cabinets. The corner cabinet has a bi-fold door for easier access. The four cut outs are located with the bottom of the square at the mid pint of the door. This is the same place as the eye is on a face. Golden proportions guide the size and placement of these squares. When the first cabinet was installed it looked as though we were being watched by the "eyes" of the cabinet. The openings don't even have glass for a more intimate relationship with the displayed objects. Behind the double doors on the right is a washing machine. A luxury in this New York City apartment.

Inspiration for a huge mediterranean backyard stone patio kitchen remodel in Phoenix with a gazebo

A wonderfully updated starter home for a young family with two small children moving to the east bay (Berkeley, Ca) from San Francisco. The client wanted simple clean lines with lots of countertop space and under counter storage only. HDR Remodeling Inc. specializes in classic East Bay homes. Dakin has been working with the owners of this site realize their dream of cultivating a rich and meaningful landscape around their home. Because of their deep engagement with their land and garden, the landscape has guided the entire design process, from architecture to civil engineering to landscape design. All architecture on site is oriented toward the garden, a park-like, multi-use environment that includes a walking labyrinth, restored prairie, a Japanese garden, an orchard, vegetable beds, berry brambles, a croquet lawn and a charred wood outdoor shower. Dakin pays special attention to materials at every turn, selecting an antique sugar bowl for the outdoor fire pit, antique Japanese roof tiles to create blue edging, and stepping stones imported from India. In addition to its diversity of garden types, this permacultural paradise is home to chickens, ducks, and bees. A complex irrigation system was designed to draw alternately from wells and cisterns. 3x5lion.png Dakin has also had the privilege of creating an arboretum of diverse and rare trees that she based on Olmsted’s design for Central Park. Trees were selected to display a variety of seasonally shifting delights: spring blooms, fall berries, winter branch structure. Mature trees onsite were preserved and sometimes moved to new locations.

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS The architect specified two butting/side by side 173.93 inch wide x 240.0 inch projection retractable canopy systems to be inserted in to a new steel frame structure. Each of the areas to be covered used one continuous piece of fabric and one motor. The system frame and guides specified are made entirely of aluminum which is powder coated using the Qualicoat® powder coating process. Custom color chosen for the guides by the Architect was RAL 9006 known as White Aluminum. The stainless steel components used were Inox (470LI and 316) which are of the highest quality and have an extremely high corrosion resistance. In fact, the components passed the European salt spray corrosion test as tested by Centro Sviluppo Materiali in Italy. Fabric is Ferrari 86 Color 2044 White, a fabric that is self-extinguishing (fire retardant). These retracting canopy systems has a Beaufort wind load rating Scale 10 (up to 63 mph) with the fabric fully extended and in use. A grey hood with end caps was requested for each end to prevent rain water (location is Alexandria, Virginia) from collecting in the folds of fabric when not in use. A running profile which runs from end to end in the rear of each section was necessary to attach the Somfy RTS motor which is installed inside a motor safety box. The client chose to control the system with two remote controls, two white wall switches and two Somfy wind sensors. PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT Our original contact was from the architect who requested two retractable systems that would attach to a new steel structure and that would meet local wind load requirements since the units are installed on the top of the building known as Metro Park VI. The architect wanted a contemporary, modern and very clean appearance and a product that would also meet International Building Code Requirements. The purpose of the project was to provide an area for shade, heat, sun, glare and UV protection but not rain protection thus the use of Soltis 86 sheer mesh fabric. The client stated to the Architect that the area was to be used for entertainment purposes in good weather conditions. UNIQUENESS AND COMPLEXITY OF THE PROJECT This project was a challenge since the steel structure was being built at the same time (simultaneously) as the retractable patio cover systems were being manufactured to meet a deadline therefore there was no room for error. In addition, removing all the extrusions, fabric etc. from the crate and hoisting them to the top of the building was indeed difficult but accomplished. PROJECT RESULTS The client is elated with the results of both retractable canopy cover systems. Along with landscaping, the exterior top floor of the Metro Park VI building was transformed and is truly a stunning example of design, function and aesthetics as can be seen in the pictures. Goal accomplished – All customer requirements were met including a contemporary, modern, stylish and very clean appearance along with providing shade, sun, UV, glare and heat reduction.
