Sited on a Wyoming mountainside, just below the tree line, this home traverses a steep, east facing slope located just south of Grand Teton National Park. The house is conceived as a series of terraces offering views of the mountainous, vast landscape to the east and minimizing the visual impact of the building from the valley below. Designed for a family of six who share a love for the landscape and all mountain sports, the stepping volumes create separate zones for the family while remaining part of a single cohesive composition that responds to the land. The program includes a cantilevered living area with views to the west, north, and east; a shared fireplace between the dining area and the living area; and a kitchen which opens to the dining room and to an outside shaded terrace. The formal entry is up-slope—convenient to the guest parking area and skiers returning along a favorite, out-of- bounds ski run. The master bedroom occupies the highest point of the design and is above an office and studio, which can are converted into bedrooms. A roof top hot-tub is embedded into the roof of the lowest volume, and a fire table enlivens the mid-level terrace.

For this renovation we tackled both the ensuite and main bathrooms for a returning client. In-keeping with the vision for their recently completed kitchen, the design for these rooms includes high contrast finishes paired with natural stone countertops and sleek, modern fixtures. For the ensuite, the goal was to make best use of the rooms’ protentional. In the shower, a large format tile combined with a complementing accent mosaic in the niche, as well as a bulit-in bench, lend a luxurious feel to a compact space. The full width medicine cabinet and custom vanity add much needed storage, allowing this room to live larger than it is. For the main bath the clients wanted a bright and airy room with a bold vanity. The dramatic countertop adds warmth and personality, and the floating vanity with a full height linen tower is an organizers dream! These spaces round out the renovations to the home and will keep the clients in a stylish space for years to come.

A DEANE client returned in 2022 for an update to their kitchen remodel project from 2006. This incredible transformation was driven by the desire to create a glamorous space for entertaining. Taking the space that used to be an office, walls were taken down to allow the new bar and tasting table to be integrated into the kitchen and living area. A climate-controlled glass wine cabinet with knurled brass handles elegantly displays bottles and defines the space while still allowing it to feel light and airy. The bar boasts door-style “wave” cabinets in high-gloss black lacquer that seamlessly conceal beverage and bottle storage drawers and an ice maker. The open shelving with integrated LED lighting and satin brass edging anchor the marble countertop.

This small rough Chinese Slate floor in the kitchen of a house in the village of Cheadle near Stockport in Greater Manchester had not had any sealer put on it for many years and was very grubby (dishevelled as described by the customer) looking even after the customer had tried to clean it. Sealers do take a lot of punishment, especially in a high traffic area such as a small kitchen and will wear off over time and once this happens the floor will start to lose its appearance as dirt becomes ingrained in the stone and it can no longer be cleaned effectively. As we have to apply a liberal amount of water with this sort of work, the first step was to remove the Kicker boards at the bottom of the Kitchen units and silicone the Kitchen units that were fixed; this stops water seeping in and blowing the MDF allowing us to concentrate on cleaning the Slate without causing any damage. I started the cleaning process by applying a strong dilution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean to get rid of the built up dirt and any remaining sealer, leaving it to soak into the Slate before scrubbing the floor with a black scrub pad fitted to buffing machine running at slow speed. Tile Doctor Pro-Clean is a strong alkaline cleaner/stripper that is safe to use on natural stone, we do have stronger products available if required but in this case a strong dilution of Pro-Clean was sufficient to tackle any remaining sealer. This process gave the Slate and grout lines a good deep clean and after rinsing the floor with water which was then extracted using a wet vacuum I repeated the process on stubborn areas until satisfied the floor was as clean and free of old sealer. Last stage of the cleaning process was to give the floor a final rinse and then get it as dry as possible using the wet vacuum to soak up the moisture. The floor was quite small so I was able to leave the floor to dry off over lunch time and then on my return managed to get it fully dry with a little heat from a heat gun. The customer wanted a mat finish so once dry I applied Tile Doctor Colour Grow sealer which impregnates into the pores of the natural stone protecting it from within and enhancing the natural colours of the Slate at the same time. For general cleaning of Sealed stone floors, we recommend the use of a PH Neutral Cleaner as anything with a strong PH will degrade the life of the sealer over time. We did this by filling every little corner of the allowable building area (width, depth, AND height). Before we redesigned the basement of this charming but compact 1950's North Vancouver home, this space was an unfinished utility room that housed nothing more than an outdated furnace and hot water tank. Since space was at a premium we recommended replacing the furnace with a high efficiency model and converting the hot water tank to an on-demand system, both of which could be housed in the adjacent crawl space. That left room for a generous laundry room conveniently located at the back entrance of the house where family members returning from a mountain bike ride can undress, drop muddy clothes into the washing machine and proceed to shower in the bathroom just across the hall.
