Inspiration for a transitional kitchen remodel in Chicago

A person’s home is the place where their personality can flourish. In this client’s case, it was their love for their native homeland of Kenya, Africa. One of the main challenges with these space was to remain within the client’s budget. It was important to give this home lots of character, so hiring a faux finish artist to hand-paint the walls in an African inspired pattern for powder room to emphasizing their existing pieces was the perfect solution to staying within their budget needs. Each room was carefully planned to showcase their African heritage in each aspect of the home. The main features included deep wood tones paired with light walls, and dark finishes. A hint of gold was used throughout the house, to complement the spaces and giving the space a bit of a softer feel.

The dining room features a dining table from Gabby paired with antique chairs sourced by Elle in France. Chairs were given an update with beautiful new fabric with hints of green, blue and gray. The unique turquoise light fixture from Lightology pulls the space together.

Hints of the spectacular views beyond this home can be glimpsed through the center of the home and around the green edges, but the magnitude of the visual drama beyond is mostly hidden from curbside.

The interior design concept involves accentuating the villa’s breath-taking sea views throughout the beautiful four floor levels. The living area and supporting rooms are situated on the bottom two floor levels. While the master bedroom and other guest rooms are located on the top two floors. There is a hint of classic and modern interlude encompassed with touches of blue intertwined complimenting the picturesque sea views from every window. The interior layout has been designed as an open floor layout to illuminate the villa with natural light and create a luxurious Zen ambience.

A close look at the primary shower's beautifully textured stone-effect tile — its organic, wave-like surface catching the light in a way that makes the wall feel almost alive. A recessed niche with a crisp white surround offers both function and composition, while a glimpse of the fluted wood accent panel to the right hints at the warmth that defines this bathroom throughout.

Interiors as a Sequence of Galleries Inside, the home unfolds as a series of spatial moments connected by a sculptural stair and gallery-like corridors. Wide plank oak floors run throughout, providing continuity and warmth against a palette of plaster walls, dark steel detailing, and natural stone. The hallways function almost as curated galleries, with layered artworks suspended in front of mesh panels that create depth and subtle shadow. Light filters through carefully placed windows and stair openings, transforming circulation spaces into contemplative transitions rather than mere passageways. A Living Room Anchored by Stone and Light The primary living room occupies one of the home’s central floors, where a quiet interplay of texture and geometry defines the space. A monumental fireplace wrapped in dark stone forms the room’s anchor, its mass contrasting with a recessed ceiling plane that seems to float above the seating area. Integrated perimeter lighting creates a soft architectural glow that washes the ceiling and walls. Furniture is sculptural yet understated—rounded lounge chairs in warm ochre velvet, tailored sofas, and a striking marble cocktail table whose expressive veining becomes a focal artwork in itself. Automatic shades offer an effortless touch, allowing the Denningtons to adjust light with ease, while a new lounge area provides the perfect corner to unwind and let go of the day’s stresses.
