The entry area of the house is surrounded by natural cedar planks treated for fire resistance. The beam over the entry stairs is Alaskan Yellow Cedar, a naturally durable material that doesn't need painting. The roof tiles are actually a Tesla Solar roof, which are a class A fire rated material.

The dining area opens to the view a small deck and the pond below via a 9' wide pocked door. Both sides of the dining space can be fully opened to the site. Inspired by local fishing shacks and wharf buildings dotting the coast of Maine, this retreat interweaves large glazed openings with simple taut-skinned New England shingled cottages. This skin is incised to open views to the sea beyond and relies on light steel framing and thin braces to preserve the simple forms eroded toward sweeping views. This transitional bathroom has a metallic mosaic tile, recycled granite and glass counter top and bathtub surround. The copper colored tile is called Liberty Amber and the color is also available in the Metropolis cut and subway tiles. There are more colors in this collection. The counter and bathtub surround is made from a recycled granite and glass with copper flecks that compliment the mosaics, the color is called White Copper. The material is stain resistant, heat resistant, impact resistant and it does not need to be sealed. The material is 1/4" thick and can be placed on top of existing counters or on new cabinets. There are many colors and sizes.

This project began as a design-build proposal to build an addition for an indoor swim spa and exercise room to a ranch style house. The Clients were seeking a functional and inviting space reminiscent of the luxury resorts and space they have visited during their international travels. One of the biggest challenges was to fit the program within the site and buildable area constraints. In order to maximize floor area, the exterior walls of the addition were located parallel to the property lines along the required setbacks, which resulted in a non-orthagonal geometry in plan. The volume of the addition began to take shape with large floor to ceiling openings strengthening the connection to the outdoors with roof line that rises northward to capture daylight. A series of operable skylights ventilate the room and allow more daylight to penetrate into the adjacent existing den. Inspired by modern additions made to historic structures in Europe, we made a conscious decision to not try to blend the addition into the language of the existing ranch house, choosing instead to juxtapose a structure that was layered and felt light next to the cement tile roof and framed picture windows. The interior walls were finished with a marine grade plywood to withstand a humid environment, and the exteriors were clad with a cedar rainscreen to give privacy where needed and gradually reduced to allow for more glass and visibility. The Clients are immersed in the technological environment of Silicon Valley and appreciated the simple geometries and aesthetics of modern design. c david wakely
