Nestled in a wooded area in the Pacific Northwest, the 1800 sf Passive Cedar Haus was built as a retirement home. The Artisans Group designed the layout of the home, mindful of aging in place, and working to ensure that the home blended in with the surrounding natural beauty. The project meets a complex program, with an unheated sleeping porch for a master bedroom, a screened porch, a 600 sf caretakers apartment/mother in law unit, large wood shop, plus a two car carport. The home seamlessly integrates a floating cedar tongue and groove roof with large sheltering overhangs, clerestory windows, and language of cedar slats for privacy screens and doors inside and out. The warm, natural materials of wood and cork for the interior palette are punctuated by lively accents and stunning fixtures. This ultra energy efficient home relies on extremely high levels of insulation, air-tight detailing and construction, and the implementation of high performance, custom made European windows and doors by Zola Windows. Zola’s ThermoPlus Clad line, which boasts R-11 triple glazing and is thermally broken with a layer of patented German Purenit®, was selected for the project. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the main living area, gives an expansive view of the surrounding Northwest forest. The tops of these windows reveal the interior cedar clad and the up-swept soffits on the home’s exterior, creating a floating ceiling effect. Slatted spruce wood fly-overs break up the vertical areas of the great room and define separate areas that would otherwise feel like an overwhelmingly expansive space. The condo, which is situated in the picturesque waterfront community of Egg Harbor, will be transformed into a modern and functional living space. The goal of the remodel is to create a comfortable and inviting environment that takes full advantage of the natural beauty of the area. The scope of the project includes a complete gutting of the existing space and the installation of all new finishes and fixtures. The following is a breakdown of the work that was completed: Demolition: The existing flooring, walls, and ceilings will be removed to prepare for the new construction. Flooring: New hardwood flooring will be installed throughout the main living areas and bedrooms. Walls and Ceilings: The walls and ceilings will be refinished and painted with a fresh coat of paint. Lighting: A new lighting plan will be implemented to improve functionality and aesthetics. Kitchen: The kitchen will be completely redesigned and remodeled with new cabinetry, countertops, and appliances. Bathrooms: The bathrooms will be remodeled with new tile, vanities, and fixtures. Deck: The existing deck will be refinished and new outdoor furniture will be added. Windows and Doors: New windows and doors will be installed to improve energy efficiency and to enhance the overall aesthetic of the condo. The project will be managed by a team of experienced contractors who will work closely with the client to ensure that all work is completed to the highest standards of quality and that the project stays on schedule and within budget. Design objectives for the remodel were aimed at maximizing the flow and functionality of a foodie-level kitchen with multiple cooks, while enhancing the family’s preferences for spending time in the space together: Create a better workflow Space out the appliances for better use of the kitchen area Make the space feel larger visually Update all materials so the kitchen isn’t all wood No seating at an island or peninsula Larger walkways Brighten up the space with more lights and lighter colors THE REMODEL Design challenges to be solved: The idea was to work within the current walls of the kitchen. Without removing walls, it was more of a challenge to give the kitchen a larger, new feel. An island in the middle area was part of the original vision. Could a different countertop arrangement incorporate the same purpose? The homeowners are big cooks so creating room for a larger refrigerator and more countertop space by the range were musts! The sink and range were originally right next to each other, making things tough for two cooks to work at the same time. How could the new space allow for two work areas while minimizing traffic jams? THE RENEWED SPACE Design solutions fell into place once the overall layout was revamped to improve flow and functionality: The refrigerator was originally in the middle of the main walkway. To gain more walk space and room for a larger refrigerator, we moved this appliance to the back wall. The final design still has a peninsula but we flipped it to the opposite wall. This way, the walkway is more accommodating for traffic entering and exiting through the back garage door. This also gave way to a longer run of countertop space along the cooking wall. To take cooking to another level, we implemented a speed oven! The large window by the eating area is also nice for cooks to see, so we kept the sink in the peninsula. To gain space for storage and make the kitchen feel larger, we brought the wall cabinets all the way to the ceiling. What once felt tight now feels grand!

Many of its original elements were restored while functional, eco-friendly and efficient modern updates were implemented. An open concept main floor, three bright bedrooms upstairs with brand new bathrooms and a fully finished basement/den made this a brand new home, but with character and history built in.

The 7,600 square-foot residence was designed for large, memorable gatherings of family and friends at the lake, as well as creating private spaces for smaller family gatherings. Keeping in dialogue with the surrounding site, a palette of natural materials and finishes was selected to provide a classic backdrop for all activities, bringing importance to the adjoining environment. In optimizing the views of the lake and developing a strategy to maximize natural ventilation, an ideal, open-concept living scheme was implemented. The kitchen, dining room, living room and screened porch are connected, allowing for the large family gatherings to take place inside, should the weather not cooperate. Two main level master suites remain private from the rest of the program; yet provide a complete sense of incorporation. Bringing the natural finishes to the interior of the residence, provided the opportunity for unique focal points that complement the stunning stone fireplace and timber trusses. This classy final product was the result of many challenging weeks and lots of changes! What started out as a pretty large scope of work turned into a massive scope of work, and we ended up designing and reworking just about every part of every space in the house. On the main level, we upgraded an existing powder room, adding a pantry to the kitchen, installed a new gas fireplace to replace the old wood burning, painted everything with a new fresh palette, scraped off the popcorn ceilings, and implemented a new lighting scheme throughout. Upstairs, we did a full upgrade remodel to the guest bathroom, and gorgeous renovation to the master bathroom. We installed new ceiling fans in every bedroom, painted the entire level, hung a new stairwell chandelier, replaced closet doors, scraped popcorn ceilings, and added recessed lights. In the basement, we added a new stair railing, remodeled the basement bathroom, completed re-faced the existing fireplace and hearth, added a new gas insert, created a gorgeous back storage wall, and scraped popcorn ceilings. We also painted and added recessed lighting here, and replaced old wood doors with fresh white ones. This whole house carries a gorgeous, fresh, elegantly traditional aesthetic now that is cohesive and beautiful!

From the very beginning, I knew that we would want to add a long console table behind the sofa to: bring the sectional forward (making it feel more apart of the room), allow for more light fixtures and to provide an opportunity to add some more color through the decor. We selected this long, narrow console table from Joss and Main, and then placed these beautiful buffet lamps on either side. The interior design store that I worked in after college, LOVED to do this in their designs. With the sectional against the wall like this, I felt that this was the perfect opportunity to implement their design technique.

A new lighting plan was implemented to deliver light to crucial areas to improve visibility and visual comfort while working in the kitchen, as well as contributed to a sense of spaciousness. This is a super modern townhome with original pale tones, mainly a white canvas. Our sophisticated and well-traveled out-of-town clients purchased this townhome right in the middle of the pandemic. They needed a full-cycle interior design studio like ours to take on this project while they were in transit to Montecito. The scope was the complete renovation and facelift of the kitchen, powder room, master bedroom, master bathroom, guest suites, basement, and outdoor areas. Our clients wanted to bring warm tones such as orange and red throughout the 4-story Montecito townhome. They were open to discovering and implementing different interior design ideas in each section of the house. This project also features our SORELLA furniture pieces made exclusively by hand in Portugal and shipped to our clients in Montecito.
