This gorgeous summer retreat was in need of a complete overhaul! After SuperStorm Sandy renovations to the lower level, my clients were ready to tackle the 3 upper floors. The home is chock full of original beauty with its custom bead board and moldings. Walnut banisters and solid five panels interior doors - adorned with crystal knobs. We took advantage of the amazing exposed ceiling beams in living and dining rooms. Incredible wavy leaded glass doors are found in both the foyer and bar rooms. Imposing interior walls were removed to make way for this dream kitchen! A classic 9" subway tile sets the tone for the white shaker front cabinets and quartz counter top. While the contrasting soft gray island carries an almost black dropped miter edge quartz top. For that old world charm, we added a pair of open shelves to showcase the dinnerware and glasses. Custom furnishings and window treatments are found through the home. Our goal was to create an amazingly cozy home that our clients could enjoy for generations to come!!

After the fire, the retired couple wanted an open space in place of their galley kitchen; re-use the mosaic backsplash and fill the imposing void of the new, soaring 16 foot ceiling. Cabinets arranged in a harmonious pattern leading to the focal point create sculpture. 1- Hood angle parallels the ceiling towards refrigerator, similar to connecting the stars of a constellation. 2- The refrigerator cabinet angles to the ceiling at the spot where the right side of the hood points to the ceiling. 3- Unifying the sculpture, both cabinets intersect at the ceiling . 4- The focal point is the negative space between cabinets. 5- The glass cabinet doors are Golden Rectangles 15”x 24-½” with square cut outs. The 42” Sub-Zero paneled with Golden Rectangle inserts unifies the arrangement. The Wolf cook top is discrete.

VSI The rear view of this historic neoclassical estate shows the vintage exterior. The surface is scored stucco over brick and is the original finish applied in the 1840's. The patina is amazing up close. The roof is copper painted white. The 9-acre Mimosa Hall, built circa 1840, is a landmark of neoclassical design with extensive gardens in the vibrant historic district of Roswell, Georgia, 20 miles north of Atlanta. The 6,000-square-foot temple-style home has heart-of-pine floors throughout, a black-and-white marble hall, soaring ceilings, and 10 fireplaces. Famed architect Neel Reid made Mimosa his home in the 1920s, creating a double parlor and designing a long fieldstone driveway and courtyard. The gardens include century-old trees, imposing boxwood hedges, rare specimen trees, stone walls, paths, parterres, a swimming pool, and a 19th Century grist mill refashioned into a barn. In addition, 21 acres of adjoining woods are for sale, one of the few remaining tracts of developable land of its size within walking distance of Roswell’s old town square.

Two sections of hand hewn white oak barn beam — shaped by adze in the late 19th or early 20th century, the tool marks clearly visible on every face — support a thick oak plank top from the same material source. The adze marks are not decorative. They are the record of a specific person doing specific work at a specific moment in American agricultural history. This material exists in finite and diminishing supply as the barns that held it continue to come down. The form is deliberately restrained. Nothing competes with the material. Proportions were determined by the beams themselves — their weight, their scale, their presence — rather than imposed from outside. Functions equally as a coffee table, entry bench, or display surface. Significant as furniture and as object. Available for commission as hand hewn beam material is sourced. Each piece differs because the material differs.

When dusk covers the city, the residence is filled with light and attracts guests with warmth. We realized this project for an American architectural company. The client provided drawings for a 3D rendering of the night residence. House Surrounded by Beacons of Light The residence, depicted in light brown and dark gray hues, towers imposingly over the pool. It has two staircases for entry, adorned with neat metal railings in black. In between is ever-flowering greenery, which also envelops the house above and below, giving it an eco-accent. Through the panoramic windows on the first floor, you can see the faint outlines of upholstered furniture in the spacious rooms with high ceilings that radiate comfort. The second floor has an extended seating area where guests can sit on the snow-white chairs and discuss work issues while enjoying the view. Real Water Effect Looking at the pool for a long time, you can see small waves from the cool night wind. The water reflects the magnificent house and visitors, depicting unique watercolor paintings. Our 3D artists paid special attention to the pool, showing their skill in depicting photorealistic water. Professional visualization of the house harmoniously emphasizes its owners' status, minimalism, and hidden behind-the-curtains luxury. We portrayed the night residence's grandeur, fully satisfying the client's needs.

Stucco and small expanses of vertical siding accent stacked masonry construction which highlights the sense of rootedness emanating from the home. Solid, imposing walls are punctuated by small windows in a way that feels almost like the armament of a fortress. Juxtaposing this sense of density are substantial breaks of transparency provided by large-scale aluminum windows and doors. These aluminum glazing systems provide a sense of breath and airiness to the hulking mass. This ultra-modern desert home is an impressive feat of engineering, architectural design, and efficiency – especially considering the almost 23,000 square feet of living space. The A7 Series aluminum windows with triple-pane glazing were paired with custom-designed Ultra Lift and Slide doors to provide comfort, efficiency, and seamless design integration of fenestration products. Triple pane glazing units with high-performance spacers, low iron glass, multiple air seals, and a continuous thermal break make these windows and doors incomparable to the traditional aluminum window and door products of the past. Not to mention – these large-scale sliding doors have been fitted with motors hidden in the ceiling, which allow the doors to open flush into wall pockets at the press of a button.

This dramatic remodel reinvigorated mid-century modern with an updated contemporary vibe after earlier updates had traditionalized the home. Completed in 2022, a significant reorganization of the space removed an existing fireplace and reallocated a living room to create a centrally located open-concept Kitchen and Dining Room. Dominating the kitchen is the spectacular emerald-toned glass cabinetry. Vivid and rich, the matte glass provides a depth and softness unmatched by painted cabinetry. Natural quartzite slabs wrap the waterfalled island and backsplashes, the unique graining provides interest without competing against the bold cabinetry. The home’s unique butterfly floorplan is reflected in the various angles incorporated into the architectural elements of the island, new walls and directing paths through offset openings. A series of interconnected beams, soffits, and columns impose spatial order and break the space into digestible visual components. The gas range is incorporated into a niche that contains a generous backbar, full-height backsplash and integrated spice storage. The island features brass inlays at slab breaks and a contrasting granite backchannel with an inconspicuous ‘scrubby-dubby cubby’ at one end for concealing cleaning supplies. The knee space is clad in the white oak planks of the floor, aligned and turned vertically as if folded. A distinctive black stained buffet with touch latch drawers is comprised of strips of cherry repurposed from paneling found in den. Matching woodwork is incorporated into the Foyer and wraps the Fireplace.

Design work started with a modest design focused on improving the kitchen, living, dining and outdoor living areas. However, a feasibility study determined that a better option was to fully remodel the existing dwelling, resulting in reclaiming some of the front veranda to increase the size of the living and dining areas. The remaining section created an alcove to the main bedroom, increasing privacy and creating a dedicated outdoor area. A large awning, cantilevered so as not to impose on the existing septic, created a separate outdoor living area. A teak facade, that will weather to grey in the salty sea air over time, was added to extend high above the box gutter, conceal the solar panels and cap the ends of the separation walls. The roof was repitched and the internal ceilings raked upwards from the teak facade, thereby increasing the internal volume and allowing for the addition of high-light windows in rooms on the ridge side of the dwelling to capture the vista, increase natural light, ventilation and sense of space. A skillion roof outside the back kitchen area was strategically positioned out of sight from the inside of the home and created a second outdoor area in the rear courtyard, serving as the main entry point. A gate house was incorporated in the rear fence to enhance the entry. The rear courtyard reclaimed an existing parking bay to create space for the cellar/music room.

Subsequent additions are covered with living green walls to deemphasize stylistic conflicts imposed on a 1940’s Tudor and become backdrop surrounding a kitchen addition. On the interior, further added architectural inconsistencies are edited away, and the language of the Tudor’s original reclaimed integrity is referenced for the addition. Sympathetic to the home, windows and doors remain untrimmed and stark plaster walls contrast the original black metal windows. Sharp black elements contrast fields of white. With a ceiling pitch matching the existing and chiseled dormers, a stark ceiling hovers over the kitchen space referencing the existing homes plaster walls. Grid members in windows and on saw scored paneled walls and cabinetry mirror the machine age windows as do exposed steel beams. The exaggerated white field is pierced by an equally exaggerated 13 foot black steel tower that references the existing homes steel door and window members. Glass shelves in the tower further the window parallel. Even though it held enough dinner and glassware for eight, its thin members and transparent shelves defy its massive nature, allow light to flow through it and afford the kitchen open views and the feeling of continuous space. The full glass at the end of the kitchen reveres a grouping of 50 year old Hemlocks. At the opposite end, a window close to the peak looks up to a green roof.
