This young couple, busy raising two young boys (plus a playful cat), had always planned to renovate—it was just a matter of finding the right people for the job.
Their biggest concern? Hiring a contractor they could truly rely on to bring their vision to life without added stress.
The master ensuite simply wasn’t working. A large, unused deck-mount tub dominated the space, while the tiny, dim shower made daily routines uncomfortable. The layout didn’t make sense for how they actually used the room, which ended up being mostly for the toilet and vanity. On top of that, the master bedroom sat in an open loft without proper walls or a door, making privacy nearly impossible.
Our solution involved a thoughtful reconfiguration of the ensuite. We removed the oversized tub and replaced it with a spacious walk-in shower. The old, cramped shower space became the perfect spot for a relocated vanity, allowing for better flow and use of the room. Up in the loft, we built a new wall with a door to give the bedroom the privacy it was missing. The stairway was also refreshed with new oak treads and a stained handrail to match the existing flooring.
One challenge during construction was installing the custom shower glass and tile within the sloped ceilings and angled walls—but our team carefully managed every detail to ensure a precise and polished finish.
The new master ensuite now feels like a retreat.
Handmade-style blue subway tiles add a calming pop of colour in the shower, paired with crème porcelain floor tiles. A prefabricated solid wood vanity with quartz countertop, brushed nickel fixtures, and an electric towel warmer complete the space—bringing comfort and functionality together beautifully.
A fun moment during the design phase? We used stools, tables, and even a piano to mock up the future layout—helping the homeowners get a real feel for the spacing between the new vanity and toilet. It was a creative, hands-on way to ensure everyone felt confident moving forward.
Now, the ensuite functions exactly as it should: a fully usable and relaxing 3-piece bathroom, styled just the way they wanted. And with the new loft wall and door, the bedroom finally feels like a true primary suite—private, peaceful, and made for them.

Statuario marble took center stage in this lovely master ensuite, highlighting it's timeless beauty. Each detail was carefully planned out to create a functional & relaxing environment for this lovely couple to enjoy. The custom vanity was inspired by an elegant furniture piece, infusing an 'old meets new' design flare. The large shower showcases a unique cantilevered bench, delicately suspended from the wall. The free standing bath tub was precisely selected to emphasize the importance of a little R&R.

BeachHaus is built on a previously developed site on Siesta Key. It sits directly on the bay but has Gulf views from the upper floor and roof deck.
The client loved the old Florida cracker beach houses that are harder and harder to find these days. They loved the exposed roof joists, ship lap ceilings, light colored surfaces and inviting and durable materials.
Given the risk of hurricanes, building those homes in these areas is not only disingenuous it is impossible. Instead, we focused on building the new era of beach houses; fully elevated to comfy with FEMA requirements, exposed concrete beams, long eaves to shade windows, coralina stone cladding, ship lap ceilings, and white oak and terrazzo flooring.
The home is Net Zero Energy with a HERS index of -25 making it one of the most energy efficient homes in the US. It is also certified NGBS Emerald.

The defining move in this remodel was closing off an existing doorway that opened from a hallway directly into the kitchen. That single change unlocked one continuous run of cabinetry along the full perimeter wall, something the previous layout made impossible. The sink and dishwasher were relocated to a new island, which also houses an under-counter ice maker and provides seating at its capped ends. A pot filler was added above the range, and a dedicated appliance garage was framed behind shiplap panels on one end of the kitchen.
The original ceiling beams were preserved and re-stained in Minwax Espresso to match the stain-grade island. Shiplap paneling runs the upper wall as a backsplash across the perimeter, stepping aside only at the range, where Tuscan Dream quartz rises to meet the custom vent hood shell. The island is topped in Ethereal Amber quartz with a 2.5" mitered edge. Perimeter counters and the appliance garage are leathered Vincent Black granite. The cabinetry throughout is painted inset, flat panel with profile, in Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter. Wave glass fronts the upper cabinets flanking the range. Champagne bronze runs consistently through the hardware, faucet, pot filler, and air switch.
The flooring in the kitchen and breakfast room was replaced to match the existing wood plank porcelain tile in the adjoining spaces, keeping the transition seamless.

West Des Moines two story homes create challenges for homeowners with layouts including small rooms that don’t seem to flow together. The family that lives in this home found that entertaining and gathering in the kitchen was almost impossible with the current layout and asked for an addition to solve the problem. After listening to the challenges of that they faced and working with the homeowners, a new solution emerged without an addition, reducing the overall budget and allowing the whole main floor to be updated.
By removing the wall between the kitchen and dinning room, the team was able to design an island for family and friends to congregate around. Then by flanking the island with a large commercial range surrounded by a custom backsplash and custom hood a picture perfect kitchen was born. Lastly by repeating elements within the range hood, island and fireplace, the team was able to create unity throughout the space. This visually makes the space feel larger and feels like the addition was built

Even NFL players should have grab bars in the shower, and this one is no exception. Anyone who slips will grab the first thing they can. Even our towel bars serve as grab bars. All showers are curbless unless, as in this case, it's a loft, so it was impossible to recess the floor.

Fully renovated closet with new Flat panel doors and mirror. opening height from 82" to 96" to maximize access to otherwise impossible to get to storage space.

This dining and kitchen space in a wabi-sabi lakeside retreat designed by PKA Architecture and Yond Interiors is grounded by antique elm flooring, with antique elm ceiling paneling and box beams carrying the same warm tone overhead. A long dining table with leather and rush-seat chairs sits beneath layered pendant lighting, while a wood-toned kitchen with open shelving and a wood bench divider with black steel columns continue the home's natural, restrained palette. French doors open to a patio and wooded view beyond.
Our antique elm flooring, ceiling paneling, and box beams are milled from barn timbers dating from 1820 to 1880, carrying unique marks such as wormholes, peg holes, and mortise pockets left behind by centuries old woodworking. Because widespread Dutch Elm Disease in the 1970s made new elm nearly impossible to find, reclaimed elm remains one of the only ways to bring its warm, inviting tones into a home. The natural hues of reclaimed elm are bright and comforting, showing tans, light browns, and a subtle tinge of red that gives the wood an almost iridescent shimmer, embodying the wabi-sabi appreciation for natural imperfection and the passage of time.
Whether you are a homebuilder, a home remodeling contractor, a homeowner, or a designer planning a dining space like this, Manomin Resawn Timbers has the antique elm flooring, paneling, and box beams to bring warmth and character to your home. Willie & Leslie of Barrington Hills loved the location of their home. Its breathtaking views overlooked a wooded backyard and a captivating lake. They didn’t want to move, but they needed more space. But the house was missing that big family room where everyone could gather, relax and converse, and the house was completely cut off visually from the beautiful outdoor view right outside!
They knew what they wanted meant building an addition to their home. They began searching the internet and came across Advance Design Studio, and after browsing through project after project and reading one outstanding client review after another, they were sold on Advance Design. Additionally, they loved Advance Design’s “Common Sense Remodeling” process and felt confident that it would allow the Design/Build company to easily coordinate the multiple projects they wanted to complete all at one time. Willie and Leslie immediately set up a meeting with Owner Todd Jurs and Project Designer Claudia Pop. When the meeting ended, they were sure that Advance Design were the right people and the right approach for their project.
"Establishing a direction and a budget is always key in project of this size," Todd said. "This house was screaming for a family room and it didn't have one. Ultimately, it's about working together towards the same goal of a beautiful functional addition."
The project consisted of a significant family room addition with an extraordinary vaulted ceiling and floor to ceiling fireplace, a guest suite renovation with a luxury bath, a garage addition, and an adjoining outdoor patio renovation complete with a fantastic built in grilling station. The main goal was to add comfort and space to the existing home that would last their lifetime, and finally allow them to capture the amazing view of the backyard and lake that they never could really enjoy previously.
Willie, Leslie and Claudia paid special attention to designing the space to make sure that the footprint of the room did not interfere with the views. Floor to ceiling Pella windows were incorporated into a spectacular window wall to provide plenty of natural light.
Vaulted ceilings gave the room a bigger feel and the stunning floor to ceiling masonry fireplace was designed giving the room a rustic, comfortable feel of a Colorado Lodge. Barnwood doors and exposed wooden beams accentuate the crackling fireplace and family gathering space. An oversized statement chandelier bathes the space in soft light once the sun sets and compliments the exposed wood and fireplace perfectly.
“It simple elegant and beautiful,” Designer Claudia Pop said. “It is a great family room that captures the views perfectly. They love the fireplace, the barndoors and the openness of the space we designed for the whole family now to enjoy.”
And when warm weather beckons, the outdoor patio is a terrific place to spend an evening. The family now enjoys fall nights in front of their outdoor fireplace overlooking the quiet lake. Dekton Trillium Quartz counters tops adorn an amazing grilling bar. Nearly indestructible, they are the only manufactured stone product designed exclusively to withstand high heat in summer and extreme cold temperatures in winter.
The guest bath renovation makes Willie and Leslie’s friends and family feel like they are staying at a 5-star hotel. Carlisle colored Maple cabinets from Medallion make a roomy dual vanity more than adequate with plenty of space to get ready for the day after a peaceful night’s sleep. Cambria Quartz countertops are durable and elegant, while contrasting the neutral cabinets flawlessly. Heated flooring from Warmly Yours is the cherry on top for this cozy guest bath.
All the projects turned out better than they even imagined. Willie and Leslie now have a spacious family room with even better views of the lake and woods, a much larger garage, a fantastic relaxing outdoor patio, and a guest bath that makes it almost impossible to get the guest to leave after their stay.

This door was found on craigslist. Impossible to paint the way this antique farm door from Nebraska is already! It really is a beautiful and crusty, with many layers of paint. There is a panel on the outside that pulls up over the window area. It is a true original hand made storm door, extra thick, and totally one of a kind. Reclaimed wood and heavy wrought iron bookcase also found on craigslist. Kastendiek photo
