Our clients lived in a wonderful home they designed and built which they referred to as their dream home until this property they admired for many years became available. Its location on a point with spectacular ocean views made it impossible to resist. This 40-year-old home was state of the art for its time. It was perfectly sited but needed to be renovated to accommodate their lifestyle and make use of current materials. Thus began the 3-year journey. They decided to capture one of the most exquisite views of Boston’s North Shore and do a full renovation inside and out. This project was a complete gut renovation with the addition of a guest suite above the garage and a new front entry.

This very large corner site was shrouded in tired and thirsty conventional lawn. Really a bland, uninteresting monoculture—impossible to maintain especially in light of our dwindling resources and our growing understanding about sustainable practices. We chose to approach this project not with the idea that existing lawn is bad, but with respect for what lawn has historically represented: a socially connective tissue. Instead of conventional grass requiring endlessly large amounts of water, chemicals and mowing, this lawn conversion shifts to a naturalistic native meadow mix splashed with wildflowers and drought tolerant native shrubs. It was the clients’ desire to be wrapped by a garden attracting native pollinators and beneficial insects. A wildlife photographer, they wanted the opportunity to open windows and doors and feel immediately connected to a coastal native environment. The handsome new stone walls, stairs and massive boulders became the structural framework containing the loose, coastal sage scrub plant community, holding the landscape together during the dormant months. As we continue to grow our acceptance of and appreciation for climate appropriate California gardens, and embrace the paradigm shift, let us graciously bid adieu to our home’s unsustainable velvet robe.

The family purchased the 1950s ranch on Mullet Lake because their daughter dreamed of being married on its shores. The home would be used for the wedding venue and then as a wedding gift to the young couple. We were originally hired in August 2014 to help with a simple renovation of the home that was to be completed well in advance of the August 2015 wedding date. However, thorough investigation revealed significant issues with the original foundation, floor framing and other critical elements of the home’s structure that made that impossible. Based on this information, the family decided to tear down and build again. So now we were tasked with designing a new home that would embody their daughter’s vision of a storybook home – a vision inspired by another one of our projects that she had toured. To capture this aesthetic, traditional cottage materials such as stone and cedar shakes are accentuated by more materials such as reclaimed barn wood siding and corrugated CORTEN steel accent roofs. Inside, interior finishes include hand-hewn timber accents that frame openings and highlight features like the entrance reading nook. Natural materials shine against white walls and simply furnished rooms. While the house has nods to vintage style throughout, the open-plan kitchen and living area allows for both contemporary living and entertaining. BeachHaus is built on a previously developed site on Siesta Key. It sits directly on the bay but has Gulf views from the upper floor and roof deck. The client loved the old Florida cracker beach houses that are harder and harder to find these days. They loved the exposed roof joists, ship lap ceilings, light colored surfaces and inviting and durable materials. Given the risk of hurricanes, building those homes in these areas is not only disingenuous it is impossible. Instead, we focused on building the new era of beach houses; fully elevated to comfy with FEMA requirements, exposed concrete beams, long eaves to shade windows, coralina stone cladding, ship lap ceilings, and white oak and terrazzo flooring. The defining move in this remodel was closing off an existing doorway that opened from a hallway directly into the kitchen. That single change unlocked one continuous run of cabinetry along the full perimeter wall, something the previous layout made impossible. The sink and dishwasher were relocated to a new island, which also houses an under-counter ice maker and provides seating at its capped ends. A pot filler was added above the range, and a dedicated appliance garage was framed behind shiplap panels on one end of the kitchen. The original ceiling beams were preserved and re-stained in Minwax Espresso to match the stain-grade island. Shiplap paneling runs the upper wall as a backsplash across the perimeter, stepping aside only at the range, where Tuscan Dream quartz rises to meet the custom vent hood shell. The island is topped in Ethereal Amber quartz with a 2.5" mitered edge. Perimeter counters and the appliance garage are leathered Vincent Black granite. The cabinetry throughout is painted inset, flat panel with profile, in Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter. Wave glass fronts the upper cabinets flanking the range. Champagne bronze runs consistently through the hardware, faucet, pot filler, and air switch. The flooring in the kitchen and breakfast room was replaced to match the existing wood plank porcelain tile in the adjoining spaces, keeping the transition seamless.

So we hired in a lounge room setting to complement the style of the rest of the house..... and there we had it - added value from a second living area with million Dollar views. This Spanish style Californian home used our Antique Barnboard Oak flooring in all 6.5" wide planks. Aging patina, stress cracks and some original saw marks combined with nail holes and solid knots give this grade of reclaimed oak flooring a very unique character that is impossible to match with new flooring.
