Located in Manhattan, this beautiful three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath apartment incorporates elements of mid-century modern, including soft greys, subtle textures, punchy metals, and natural wood finishes. Throughout the space in the living, dining, kitchen, and bedroom areas are custom red oak shutters that softly filter the natural light through this sun-drenched residence. Louis Poulsen recessed fixtures were placed in newly built soffits along the beams of the historic barrel-vaulted ceiling, illuminating the exquisite décor, furnishings, and herringbone-patterned white oak floors. Two custom built-ins were designed for the living room and dining area: both with painted-white wainscoting details to complement the white walls, forest green accents, and the warmth of the oak floors. In the living room, a floor-to-ceiling piece was designed around a seating area with a painting as backdrop to accommodate illuminated display for design books and art pieces. While in the dining area, a full height piece incorporates a flat screen within a custom felt scrim, with integrated storage drawers and cabinets beneath. In the kitchen, gray cabinetry complements the metal fixtures and herringbone-patterned flooring, with antique copper light fixtures installed above the marble island to complete the look. Custom closets were also designed by Studioteka for the space including the laundry room.

This sophisticated kitchen incorporates elements traditionally found in a Craftsman style space.
The homeowner selected the AristoKraft Winstead doorstyle, which is a full overlay shaker available in Maple, in the Umber finish. Incorporating the dark, rich woods reinforces the Craftsman style and places an emphasis on the cabinet’s natural beauty.
Maximizing storage while still making sure everything was easily accessible was the biggest concern. Adding several interior conveniences such as tip out trays in the sink base, garbage and recycle pullouts in the island, and roll out shelving below the cooktop helped immensely with accessibility. The customer also opted to include a tray divider cabinet for cookie sheets and spice pullouts.
The designers were able to find the right color of AristoKraft cabinets by pulling woodsy brown hues from the perimeter and island countertops.
When designing the island, having plenty of space for preparation was crucial. The original kitchen design started with a smaller island, approximately 54x48”. By the third revision, the island had grown to roughly 96 x 84”, including space for barstools on the back side and additional storage for wine below the overhang.
The stainless steel appliances and hardware ties the space together and creates cohesiveness.
Undercabinet lighting is highly functional and enhances the lush colors found in the cabinets and countertops.
The exposed wood beam is an excellent design element. Not only does it compliment the rich cabinetry, it also adds a unique component found in most Craftman style kitchens. Additionally, the beam shows the location of the original exterior wall.

An open floor plan kitchen renovation essentially merges your kitchen area with another living space, typically the dining room or living room, creating a more spacious and interconnected feel.
Opening Up the Space and Removing walls:
This is the key step, taking down non-load-bearing walls that separate the kitchen from the living or dining area. You'll want to consult a structural engineer to ensure any remaining walls can support the weight of the house.
Considering beams or columns:
Depending on the layout and size of the opening, you might need exposed beams or support columns to maintain structural integrity. These can be incorporated into the design as a stylish feature.
Kitchen Repositioning and Functionality:
Rethinking the work triangle: The work triangle refers to the refrigerator, sink, and stove - the most used areas in a kitchen. In an open plan, you'll want to ensure these elements remain close together for an efficient workflow. This might involve rearranging cabinetry or appliances.
Creating a focal point: An island is a popular choice in open concept kitchens. It can house the sink, cooktop, provide additional storage and counter space, and even offer seating for guests to chat while you cook. Peninsula counters can also be used for a similar effect.
Unifying Design Elements: Use consistent flooring throughout the open area to create a cohesive flow. You can also extend the same color scheme or material accents (like backsplash tile) from the kitchen into the adjoining space.
Letting in Light: Maximize natural light by incorporating large windows or skylights. This will brighten the entire open area and make it feel even more spacious.
Storage Solutions: With an open plan, you might lose some wall space for cabinets. Consider built-in storage solutions like pantry cabinets or creative mudroom cabinetry to ensure you have enough storage for your kitchenware.
An open floor plan kitchen renovation can be a transformative project, creating a light-filled and social space in your home. By carefully planning the layout, incorporating design elements that unify the space, and addressing practical considerations with lighting and storage, you can achieve a beautiful and functional open concept kitchen.
