Christmas holiday design for an amazing animal conservation ranch in Texas. Our goal was to deliver a holiday scheme indicative of rustic Texas. For year 2012 our look was to design with a color palette of forest green, rust, brown, cream and gold pulling from the use of natural elements, often found on the ranch, such as pheasant and ostrich feathers, deer sheds, lichen covered branches, beautiful vintage fowl and small critter taxidermy, massive pine comes, silver birch branches etc.. mixed with vintage wood skis, copper bladed ice skates, rustic lanterns, etc..

This piece is one of our industrial horizontal filing cabinets that would look great in any industrial office or home office setting. It has been beautifully handcrafted of solid steel that has been finished in a vintage style patina. We can make this lateral filing cabinet in any size and configuration, but the one listed here has been constructed with four large pullout file drawers of equal size, with inner mesh doors, and in the dimensions of 72” W x 20” D x 30” high. It could be made with more drawers or less, depending on your needs. Locks could also be installed to secure your confidential documents or whatever belongings may be inside. The top is made with durable solid steel but for a more rustic industrial look, could be outfitted with any of the reclaimed woods you see on any of our other pieces. We even have a few on hand that have historical significance, but these add significantly to the price and have very limited availability. We can also make it in any of the steel finishes you see on any of our other items. The center compartment has been built with two mesh doors, but could be made solid steel or reclaimed wood to complement the vintage look. Behind the doors is one removable shelf inside the cabinet. This area can be used to store more files or office supplies. The shelf could also be constructed to adjustable (for an additional price – please inquire). The impressive modern industrial style has been enhanced by the use of decorative rivets. We can always add more or less or none at all. The filing cabinet sits on legs adorned with industrial style brackets, but could be replaced with casters for a mobile file cabinet. These also make great industrial dressers. "Transitional" -- what exactly does this term mean? Especially, when describing interior design. Transitional style design, usually means that you have characteristics of both modern and traditional in your space. You kind of fall in that even middle ground between both styles. For this dining room, our client was just that. However, she wasn't aware of it. She was trying to pair multiple traditional elements together, but it left her feeling unhappy. The space was feeling dark, filled with heavy furniture and nothing was popping or even uplifting. She knew she liked to mix patterns and textures, but was also unsure of how to achieve that. As I looked around her home, I realized that their art collection definitely leaned more on the modern and colorful side of the spectrum. This was a big indicator to me, she wasn't fully traditional at all, she was more transitional! That was my que, and we got to work and this is the result. Native House Photography

Our clients loved this tree-lined older, established neighborhood. They bought a house there that needed substantial renovations as it probably had not been updated in 30-40 years. They contacted Shapiro & Co in hopes that they would be able to transition an older, outdated house to a home that retained its character but was redesigned to meet the current needs of the family. The house foyer was very small and not accomodating for visitors so the architects relocated the entry and added a welcoming front porch. After an assessment of the existing conditions, it was determined that the kitchen, while serving its purpose in the 1940s, was completely out of character and in the wrong location for a modern family's needs. So the architects relocated and created an entirely new kitchen, and family and dining spaces. As indicative of homes in the ’40s and '50s, the master bedroom and bathroom were very small and not meeting current needs. Therefore we repurposed one bedroom into the master bath and dressing area and reorganized and enlarged the master bedroom area. The original second-floor plan was very small and confining. We captured some attic space and were able to create two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and a central common room for the children. By a sensitive assessment of the client’s needs and while maintaining the charm of the home, we were able to completely renovate and enlarge the house while keeping it in context with the beautiful neighborhood. We combined the kitchen, laundry room, dry bar, under stair pantry and opened up walls to the three surrounding rooms to make this kitchen the true center of the house. The owners entertain a bunch and have events where people are inside and outside on their amazing property. They wanted to have flow to/from their side yard which features a fireplace, play areas, cabana bath, etc...

This meditation bench brings the outside in by featuring a stone as one of the legs to hold up the top, creating a great place to be alone with your thoughts and meditate. This bench is balanced with a hollowed granite leg, ground out by hand with the aid of a diamond drill bit and an angle grinder to provide a more manageable weight. I hand-carved a peek-a-boo opening in the mahogany seat to expose the granite for aesthetic interest while supporting the seat with a custom-fabricated metal bracket underneath for stability. The wooden leg is mortised securely through the top and wedged in place with walnut wedges. The supporting walnut arch spanning from one leg to the underside of the seat is one piece. The arch passes through a mortise in each of the cross braces, which are precisely spaced to provide artistic interest and balance. Each mortise was cut by hand with a mallet and chisel. This silky-smooth bench was built without nails or screws and made from high-quality hardwood, richly-grained African mahogany that begs to be touched. The seat and one leg are African mahogany, and the wedges, arch, and cross braces are walnut. The beautifully placed granite leg is local Colorado granite with natural lichen. The rich reddish-brown mahogany against the subtle soft green color of the lichen provides a sense of stability and harmony. The design inspiration for having the rock poke through the bench top came from an architect friend, who had a granite boulder craned in through the roof of a house and carved into a gas fireplace. The architect’s stories about how challenging the project was to integrate such an organic piece in an otherwise modern home got me thinking about how I could incorporate organic shapes into my furniture. The arch design came from one of my favorite hiking places in the Cascades, a bridge that spans across Multnomah Falls. Since publishing this work, I have been told that the design is stupid as only one person can sit on the bench at a time. Those opinions are the beauty of art, as everyone interprets it differently, and not everyone will get its purpose. However, subconsciously, I think the design spoke well for itself, as its purpose is for one person to be alone and meditate. Its deeper meaning may not be obvious or understood by everyone. However, its design has at least set the stage as only one person can comfortably sit on it at a time. This level of detail is indicative of my work. I try to create a single focal point to catch the viewer’s eye and draw them in. Then, once they get up close to a piece and start interacting with it, they will start to see all the additional details. I like how the bench top is carefully carved so it sits around the stone and how the weight of the stone helps balance the piece. They start to understand how it was built as they see the joinery detail, of how the tenon comes through the top and is wedged in place.

Large windows were thoughtfully placed to provide a visual connection to the surrounding landscape while allowing a degree of privacy from the main house. An accessible terrace provides a private space for the clients to enjoy views of the river and woods. Raised Corten steel planters allow a lifelong gardener to be safely seated while she tends to her plants and provide her with a visual cue that indicates the edge of the terrace.

The tropical features of the lands surrounding Roberts Bay in Sarasota make you feel like you're in a nature sanctuary. At the edge of bustling pockets of towering trees, there are mangroves for miles, hosting a litany of vibrant flora and fauna. This home is perched along the edge of the bay, with a front row seat to the hustle and bustle of the daily activities of the wading bird community, with the occasional kayak streaming by. The front of the home has a series of planters and porch that help terrace the massing up to the elevated floor level. The main spaces of the home face out the back through wide glass doors, over the pool, terraces and dog lawn. Intricate exterior architectural millwork and mouldings recall the passive ventilation and simple ornamentation indicative of the British West Indies style architecture.
