From Ordinary to Extraordinary! Believe it or not, the existing deck had a concrete floor that was cracking and leaking. We stripped down to the frame (existing frame was maintained), rebuilt the stairs, and re-decked the deck. The addition of a large Equinox louvered roof gives the upper deck a room-like feel. We added TV walls (upper and lower), a new ceiling below, a new kitchen, tempest torches for ambiance, and infrared heaters (upper and lower). We added hardscape steps and path to tie the entrance to the deck and patio below. We transformed this space from blah to beautiful (check out the before picture!), exceeding all of the homeowners expectations! Want yours? The building was originally a simple but elegant and functional Swedish Evangelical Congregational Church, built in 1894. An addition was added to the church at the back corner in the 1950’s. The church was later sold and converted to a residence by a local architect in the 1980’s. During the conversion, the rear addition to the structure was transformed into a master bedroom, and the lower level of the church was re-purposed as additional bedrooms and living space. This home for a family of five young children is located on two acres in Chicago's North Shore. The house has been designed to be open, flexible, and pre-weathered, with a European cottage feel. The first floor has been completely renovated to create a space that is perfect for family gatherings and entertaining friends. Reclaimed materials, such as French terra cotta tile flooring, white oak wood beams, and salvage mushroom palette wood planks for the ceiling, have been used throughout the main floor rooms. The family room features a new fireplace made from brick salvaged from the original home. The master bath is a spa-like retreat for parents, with reclaimed wood beams used to create the counter of the vanity, mixed with the clean lines of the sinks, faucets, and tub. The addition of three large dormers has transformed the old, musty attic into three bedrooms, two baths, and a bright, inspiring homework area for the kids. We love how this Short Hills, NJ, space turned out! Check out the “before” picture to see the amazing transformation! We designed and built this space to architecturally tie in with the house: notice how the curve of the deck echoes the curves in the upper windows and garage doors! We recessed the skirting below behind the white columns below the curve to make it disappear, which enhances the curve. This space features an Equinox louvered roof, railtop bar overlooking the pool, fireplace with TV and full kitchen. This was a difficult build since we were limited in space due to the easement that ran between the pool and deck, but we designed and built it to look like a natural extension of the home.
