The appeal of this Spanish Colonial home starts at the front elevation with clean lines and elegant simplicity and continues to the interior with white-washed walls adorned in old world decor. In true hacienda form, the central focus of this home is the 2-story volume of the Kitchen-Dining-Living rooms. From the moment of arrival, we are treated with an expansive view past the catwalk to the large entertaining space with expansive full height windows at the rear. The wood ceiling beams, hardwood floors, and swooped fireplace walls are reminiscent of old world Spanish or Andalusian architecture.

This project involved the renovation and expansion of a single-family residence in Glen Park. The site is an extra-wide (40ft) up-slope lot. The existing house was a 1940’s single-story 2 bedroom, 1 bath “bungalow” over a garage with a modest footprint. The clients wished to add “just enough” space for themselves and one child with an imperative to completely redesign the building with a modern vocabulary. Image by Cesar Rubio.

This comfortable, contemporary family room features a leather couch with faux sheepskin throw, and a separate seating area with chrome director style chairs. Area rugs placed on the light hardwood floors define each space. Large windows look out onto a wooded back yard. The high ceilings and narrow wall space lends itself to an artistic focal point—the authentic Art Institute of Chicago street banner highlighting the detail of a Seurat painting.

As a design-build firm, the designer's focus for every project is to create a space that will not only suit the lifestyle of their clients, but also incorporate their personalities and sentimental belongings to truly make the home feel that it was built custom to them. This project encompassed the style and reclaimed artifacts from a completely different century. With timely features such as stacked stone, hand troweled limestone stucco, leaded glass windows, re-claimed 18th century European doors, slate and lead roof, gas lanterns and more, the clients wanted to replicate a traditional European home.

This design is a Gulf-side 2nd home in a historically designated area. The simple goals for the home are to create a small interior 3 bedroom 2 bath house, efficient in space and low on maintenance, while maximizing the exterior spaces. The more complicated goals include designing a house that can be open when occupied and closed when not as it is 300’ from the Gulf of Mexico and must be secure from storms. The clients requested that the house could be boarded up as part of the design. They wanted the house to look inviting even when it was closed for a storm.

To banish shadows in this design, bright columns of light were fashioned, flooding the home with light and anchoring the home's industrial-meets-organic design scheme. An ingenious center light-well, topped with a massive skylight and wrapped in glass handrails, provides a breathtaking focal point accentuated by a stunning three-globe light fixture that spans the space’s height. Nearby, a glass and steel elevator whisks residents from the parlor level to the roof.
