The existing white laminate cabinets, gray counter tops and stark tile flooring did not match the rich old-world trim, natural wood elements and traditional layout of this Victorian home. The new kitchen boasts custom painted cabinets in Blue Mill Springs by Benjamin Moore. We also popped color in their new half bath using Ravishing Coral by Sherwin Williams on the new custom vanity. The wood tones brought in with the walnut island top, alder floating shelves and bench seat as well as the reclaimed barn board ceiling not only contrast the intense hues of the cabinets but help to bring nature into their world. The natural slate floor, black hexagon bathroom tile and custom coral back splash tile by Fire Clay help to tie these two spaces together. Of course the new working triangle allows this growing family to congregate together with multiple tasks at hand without getting in the way of each other and the added storage allow this space to feel open and organized even though they still use the new entry door as their main access to the home. To create the master suite this home owner dreamed of, we moved a few walls, and a lot of doors and windows. Essentially half the house went under construction. Within the same footprint we created a larger master bathroom, walk in closet, and guest room while retaining the same number of bedrooms. The second room became smaller but officially became a bedroom with a closet and more functional layout. What you don’t see in the finished pictures is a new utility room that had to be built downstairs in the garage to service the new plumbing and heating. All those black bathroom fixtures are Kohler and the tile is from Ann Sacks. The stunning grey tile is Andy Fleishman and the grout not only fills in the separations but defines the white design in the tile. This time-intensive process meant the tiles had to be sealed before install and twice after. All the black framed windows are by Anderson Woodright series and have a classic 3 light over 0 light sashes. The doors are true sealer panels with a classic trim, as well as thicker head casings and a top cap. We moved the master bathroom to the side of the house where it could take advantage of the windows. In the master bathroom in addition to the ann sacks tile on the floor, some of the tile was laid out in a way that made it feel like one sheet with almost no space in between. We found more storage in the master by putting it in the knee wall and bench seat. The master shower also has a rain head as well as a regular shower head that can be used separately or together. The second bathroom has a unique tub completely encased in grey quartz stone with a clever mitered edge to minimize grout lines. It also has a larger window to brighten up the bathroom and add some drama.

Stylish Broomall PA kitchen remodel. This homes original kitchen and laundry room were ready for an update. The kitchen was redesigned using Fabuwood Cabinetry in a mix of Nexus Frost and Nexus Slate. The laundry room cabinetry is Fabuwood Hallmark Frost. After a complete demo of both spaces and a little reconfiguring of the floor plan and cabinetry layout; we did all new electrical wiring for lighting and new appliance locations. New hardwood flooring was installed throughout. The Ceasarstone countertops in Intense White Concrete look great with the new cabinetry and super looking marble mosaic backsplash . For a smaller kitchen it has a big new look.

The owners of this 1970s-era split-level on Lake Calhoun recently added a third story bringing the home up-to-date with attractive soffits, angles, and half-walls built to create depth and dimension. But in a house where every room registered a dull white, a healthy dose of color becomes the true force for modernizing this space. The homeowners asked Otogawa-Anschel to bring color into their lives. The standalone fireplace in the room’s center wears an entirely different chromatic palette on each side. From the sleeping area and looking out toward the lake, cool tones tease out the aqua and dark blue in the slate fireplace surround. From the opposite side, warm hues pick up the rose and violet of the same material. The wall separating the bedroom from the bathroom boasts a rich adobe red, set off by a gold soffit and a rich chocolate panel. The bold, earthy color triad serves as the eye-catching anchor point for the room. Asymmetrical glass block flanking the bathroom vanity opens up an otherwise restrictive space, allowing it to communicate with the walk-in closet on one side and the natural light spill on the other. Because the green glass block diffuses the light, the room’s colors work to compensate for this softening. A mix of tangerine, pale green, and lemon yellow tile used in the shower find a place on the floor and walls as well for a burst of synthetic sunshine designed to shift and bend depending on vantage point. The gently morphing pattern eliminates the flat sterility of white tile and ordinary glass block. The transition from the second floor to the third floor features a combination of yellow hues that also appear to shimmer and shift with the movement of natural light through the space. In the intense afternoon sun, the pigments lose their distinction and become a solid glowing wall. As the sun sets, they regain their individual character. Like any healthy relationship, the living room and dining room work together while maintaining independence. In the living room, a soft suede wall gives way to the room’s large bank of windows and smartly complements the stone fireplace. Muted greens and golds segue effortlessly to the spectacular lake view. A tea pot, being a vessel, is defined by the space it contains, it is not the tea pot that is important, but the space. Crispin Sartwell Located on a lake outside of Milwaukee, the Vessel House is the culmination of an intense 5 year collaboration with our client and multiple local craftsmen focused on the creation of a modern analogue to the Usonian Home. As with most residential work, this home is a direct reflection of it’s owner, a highly educated art collector with a passion for music, fine furniture, and architecture. His interest in authenticity drove the material selections such as masonry, copper, and white oak, as well as the need for traditional methods of construction. The initial diagram of the house involved a collection of embedded walls that emerge from the site and create spaces between them, which are covered with a series of floating rooves. The windows provide natural light on three sides of the house as a band of clerestories, transforming to a floor to ceiling ribbon of glass on the lakeside. The Vessel House functions as a gallery for the owner’s art, motorcycles, Tiffany lamps, and vintage musical instruments – offering spaces to exhibit, store, and listen. These gallery nodes overlap with the typical house program of kitchen, dining, living, and bedroom, creating dynamic zones of transition and rooms that serve dual purposes allowing guests to relax in a museum setting. Through it’s materiality, connection to nature, and open planning, the Vessel House continues many of the Usonian principles Wright advocated for.
