PITCH ConceptsAn intimate park-like setting with low-maintenance materials replaced an aging wooden rooftop deck at this Bucktown home. Three distinct spaces create a full outdoor experience, starting with a landscaped dining area surrounded by large trees and greenery. The illusion is that of a secret garden rather than an urban rooftop deck.
A sprawling green area is the perfect spot to soak in the summer sun or play an outdoor game. In the front is the main entertainment area, fully outfitted with a louvered roof, fire table, and built-in seating. The space maintains the atmosphere of a garden with shrubbery and flowers. It’s the ideal place to host friends and family with a custom kitchen that is complete with a Big Green Egg and an outdoor television.

KBK Interior DesignWe set the tone for the new modern style of the home by replacing the traditional brick and wood fireplace surround with a dramatic sleek horizontal grained wenge-paneled fireplace with LED-lit flat recessed panels on either side of the surround. The dark contrast of the African-sourced wenge compliments the ethnic-influenced décor and adds texture and warmth to the sleek metal finishes and pale grey and taupe color shifts seen in the upholstery and area rug. Pops of orange create interest on the layered grey tones. Budget-friendly bound broadloom carpet with a strong geometric pattern gave the client the feel she desired without the expense of a hand-tufted rug. Frosted glass pocket doors between the living room and family room echo the rectangular recessed panels in the fireplace surround and allow the areas to be closed for privacy when entertaining.
A magazine photo presented by the client inspired the armless sofas in the living room, upholstered in a durable woven chenille fabric. Three areas allow for both intimate and group seating: two chairs at the front window; group seating around the fireplace; and at the back of the room, four lounge chairs around a coffee table create a casual hang out space overlooking the pool and close to the kitchen.

DesignARCThe Tice Residences replace a run-down and aging duplex with two separate, modern, Santa Barbara homes. Although the unique creek-side site (which the client’s original home looked toward across a small ravine) proposed significant challenges, the clients were certain they wanted to live on the lush “Riviera” hillside.
The challenges presented were ultimately overcome through a thorough and careful study of site conditions. With an extremely efficient use of space and strategic placement of windows and decks, privacy is maintained while affording expansive views from each home to the creek, downtown Santa Barbara and Pacific Ocean beyond. Both homes appear to have far more openness than their compact lots afford.
The solution strikes a balance between enclosure and openness. Walls and landscape elements divide and protect two private domains, and are in turn, carefully penetrated to reveal views.
Both homes are variations on one consistent theme: elegant composition of contemporary, “warm” materials; strong roof planes punctuated by vertical masses; and floating decks. The project forms an intimate connection with its setting by using site-excavated stone, terracing landscape planters with native plantings, and utilizing the shade provided by its ancient Riviera Oak trees.

The small kitchen design is complemented by stainless steel appliances, subway tiling, a kitchen bar, white cabinets and hardwood flooring. www.remodelworks.com
Studio MMA Architecture + DesignThis house is set on a sunny natural plateau, sheltered from the wind and enjoys magnificent views of Sutton Mounts and Echo. The layout of the house integrates harmoniously with the surrounding forest, opening to nature through large expanses of glass and terraces that connect the living spaces to the forest. A long roof shelters the house, its deep eaves acting as a sunshade and defining protected outside spaces. The wide south and east terraces, close to ground level, bring the house into contact with its site and enjoy lots of sunshine. A screen porch is strategically located to avoid blocking the primary views and provides access to the forest. The living living spaces are arranged in an open layout under a ceiling ceiling that reaches 12 feet in height, yet more intimate spaces such as the fireplace alcove modulate the spaces between the higher volumes. The construction will achieve Novoclimat certification and integrates among other things a radiant floor fed by a geothermal heating system. This project was completed in collaboration with engineers and Construction Boivin.
