The kitchen was taken fully modern: handleless white cabinetry, integrated appliances, a waterfall island, and brushed-brass hardware, all kept clean against the natural-fiber textures of the rooms around it. Guest and primary baths were rebuilt with custom vanities, frameless glass, and quartz surfaces. Throughout, a restrained coastal palette—ivory, driftwood, woven natural materials—lets the ocean stay the focal point.

“Less is more” when we first saw the space, the immediate thought was to create a modern minimalistic space – said Zoe Lee A white oak wood enhances this entire bathroom design. The fixed floating shelf, vanity cabinets and the walk-in closet doors are all dressed in this finish. The subtle nature of the light wood tone complemented with textured wall tiles installed from floor to ceiling brings about a refreshing yet intimate atmosphere reminiscent of Japanese spas. Contrasting black details from the tile flooring and shower walls with soft marble veining, metal wall base, hardware and fixtures forms a grounding element to the entire bathroom space.

This extensive remodel overlooking Lake Austin is a paean to the powerful art it enfolds. Rigorous editing of every distracting, inconsequential element of the original house was critical. So too was the insertion of new complementary components that provide artful ways to move through both interior and exterior rooms. The collection of modern art is arresting. Ranging from a Turrell hologram to a pair of Agnes Martins, the art is framed by the architecture and lighting so that it is experienced in a choreographed, curated way that encourages wandering and an intimate connection to each piece. A new interior plaster, steel, and bronze stair carves through a space occupied by two small Clement sculptures in niches, a McKay Otto sculpture on a landing and a glass cylinder elevator. This is a very specific place, designed for specific art and for a collector who has a close relationship with each piece.

Taking aesthetic cues from the original structure, which was laid out as a series of linked gable roof pavilions, the new 1,200 sf building addition invites natural light from multiple sides. The family room features a Doug Fir wood slat ceiling and radiantly heated slate floors, lending warmth to a space complete with an entertainment center and billiards table. A family cottage in the Gatineau hills infused with Canadiana shifts its way over the edge of a cliff to command views of the adjacent lake. The retreat is gently embedded in the Canadian Shield; the sleeping quarters firmly set in the rock while the cantilevered family room dramatically emerges from this stone base. The modest entry visible from the road leads to an orchestrated, tranquil path entering from the forest-side of the house and moving through the space as it opens up onto the lakeside. The house illustrates a warm approach to modernism; white oak boards wrap from wall to floor enhancing the elongated shape of the house and slabs of silver maple create the bathroom vanity. On the exterior, the main volume is wrapped with open-joint eastern white cedar while the stairwell is encased in steel; both are left unfinished to age with the elements. On the lower level, the dormitory style sleeping quarters are again embedded into the rock. Access to the exterior is provided by a walkout from the lower level recreation room, allowing the family to easily explore nature. Natural cooling is provided by cool air rising from the lake, passing in through the lakeside openings and out through the clerestory windows on the forest elevation. The expanse of windows engages the ephemeral foliage from the treetops to the forest floor. The softness and shadows of the filtered forest light fosters an intimate relationship between the exterior and the interior.

They do lots of entertaining, have an extensive wine collection and enjoy welcoming more grandchildren into the family. Both cook, although he prefers his grill. They wanted their new kitchen to be an open space that is easier to move around in. They were also looking forward to more storage and new, state-of-the-art appliances. They were truly doing the project for their own enjoyment and that of their family and guests. We’re happy to know they are thrilled with the end result. In fact, we had so much fun working together we’re now talking about a new project!

This renovated basement is a moody, elevated entertaining space designed for gathering, unwinding, and lingering a little longer. A rich black paneled wall sets a dramatic backdrop, balanced by light wood floors, warm neutral upholstery, and sculptural brass accents that add a subtle glow. The mix of tailored furnishings and organic elements creates a refined yet relaxed atmosphere—equally suited for bourbon tastings, game nights, or shooting pool in the billiards room. Thoughtful lighting and bold artwork bring depth and personality, while the open layout allows the space to flow effortlessly from bar to game table to lounge. A place for everything... and everything in its place. The chef owner of this kitchen worked with us to make sure that it would look clean and tidy when not in use. When in use- everything is in easy reach. Room Redefined is a full-service home organization and design consultation firm. We offer move management to help with all stages of move prep to post-move set-up. In this case, once we moved the homeowners into their beautiful custom home, we worked intimately with them to understand how they needed each space to function, and to customize solutions that met their goals. As a part of our process, we helped with sorting and purging of items they did not want in their new home, selling, donating, or recycling the removed items. We then engaged in space planning, product selection and product purchasing. We handled all installation of the products we recommended, and continue to work with this family today to help maintain their space as they go through transitions as a family. We have been honored to work with additional members of their family and now their mountain home in Frisco, Colorado.

From the street, it’s an impeccably designed English manor. Once inside, the best of that same storied architecture seamlessly meshes with modernism. This blend of styles was exactly the vibe three-decades-running Houston homebuilder Chris Sims, founder and CEO of Sims Luxury Builders, wanted to convey with the $5.2 million show-home in Houston’s coveted Tanglewood neighborhood. “Our goal was to uniquely combine classic and Old World with clean and modern in both the architectural design as well as the interior finishes,” Chris says. Their aesthetic inspiration is clearly evident in the 8,000-square-foot showcase home’s luxurious gourmet kitchen. It is an exercise in grey and white—and texture. To achieve their vision, the Sims turned to Cantoni. “We had a wonderful experience working with Cantoni several years ago on a client’s home, and were pleased to repeat that success on this project,” Chris says. Cantoni designer Amy McFall, who was tasked with designing the kitchen, promptly took to the home’s beauty. Situated on a half-acre corner lot with majestic oak trees, it boasts simplistic and elegant interiors that allow the detailed architecture to shine. The kitchen opens directly to the family room, which holds a brick wall, beamed ceilings, and a light-and-bright stone fireplace. The generous space overlooks the outdoor pool. With such a large area to work with, “we needed to give the kitchen its own, intimate feel,” Amy says. To that end, Amy integrated dark grey, high-gloss lacquer cabinetry from our Atelier Collection. by Aster Cucine with dark grey oak cabinetry, mixing finishes throughout to add depth and texture. Edginess came by way of custom, heavily veined Calacatta Viola marble on both the countertops and backsplash. The Sims team, meanwhile, insured the layout lent itself to minimalism. “With the inclusion of the scullery and butler’s pantry in the design, we were able to minimize the storage needed in the kitchen itself,” Chris says. “This allowed for the clean, minimalist cabinetry, giving us the creative freedom to go darker with the cabinet color and really make a bold statement in the home.” It was exactly the look they wanted—textural and interesting. “The juxtaposition of ultra-modern kitchen cabinetry and steel windows set against the textures of the wood floors, interior brick, and trim detailing throughout the downstairs provided a fresh take on blending classic and modern,” Chris says. “We’re thrilled with the result—it is showstopping.” They were equally thrilled with the design process. “Amy was incredibly responsive, helpful and knowledgeable,” Chris says. “It was a pleasure working with her and the entire Cantoni team.” Check out the kitchen featured in Modern Luxury Interiors Texas’ annual “Ode to Texas Real Estate” here.
