The family farmhouse, lovingly named “Westwood,” was showing the wear one expects after serving a growing family for decades. The owner’s dream was to revive, open up, and breathe modern life into each space, while respecting the home’s heritage. One of our first collaborations was the light fixture that would grace the main two-story entry hall. HiiH Lights in Astoria, Oregon, was commissioned to bring “the function of light, the craft of paper, and the art of sculpture” to the home. Visiting the maker’s space – a massive barn on his coastal property – was such an inspiring adventure! Original work by the resident artist sets an ethereal tone in the space, and an antique bench handsomely blends the old with the new. A wall that divided the home’s living room and kitchen was removed, and the breezy and bright gathering room was born. Light walls, warm wood tones, cozy upholstery, clean lines and heritage elements create a welcoming atmosphere and invite lounging and conversation. The sun-drenched nook is the home’s main indoor dining area, with an extension table and sculpted chairs that are just right for family gatherings or morning rituals with the Sunday paper. The kitchen is a chef’s dream with every modern amenity, but its casual attitude is “let’s make a mess and eat!” The owner’s artwork graces the mantel over the new fireplace that was carved from a tree felled on the property, illustrating the thoughtful consideration of each element. The muted wool area rugs in the entryways and great room are hard-wearing for farm life, and the furniture’s classic lines, bold contrasting colors, deep seating and soft textures encourage cozy conversations or large group gatherings. The library is undoubtedly our favorite space in this home. Tucked in “speakeasy style” behind a hidden (wallpapered!) door in the moody wet bar, and drenched in deep green, the room offers a quiet retreat that hugs you in an embrace of books and family photos. The cozy settee nestled between the bookcases sits opposite a custom pair of modern cognac leather wing chairs. The area rug continues the storied look without the antique price tag with a piece from Loloi’s “Heritage Collection.” A little va-va-voom was requested for the powder bath and boy did we deliver! Custom wallpaper plays over original wainscotting and ceilings wrapped in more glorious green. The space evokes joy every time you open the door! A primary suite that would “transport us to another world” and be “classic yet modern, peaceful, collected and uncluttered” was a tall order. Our new furniture layout takes full advantage of the view of wine country hills and the Willamette River, welcomes fireside lounging, and serves as a calm respite for the lovely owners. The client wanted an open concept layout between the kitchen and the dining/living area. This involved opening up the wall in between the dining and kitchen area, installing a kitchen countertop into the opening and creating a bar seating concept facing the kitchen. This involved extensive new framing, new electrical rough-in, new roughed in plumbing and entirely new kitchen cabinet install. This contemporary living area used the fireplace wall as the focal point to this part of the room. A large-format ceramic tile was applied on to a built-out fireplace facade. This included an inset TV wall mount above the fireplace to give it that clean, modern, contemporary high-end look. Overall, we created a spacious, open concept layout giving the space a much larger feel.

A childres playset & sandbox for the kids and a south African custom fire pit for everyone to gather around to tell tells & stories! Back at the covered patio, an outdoor custom kitchen, churrasco grill, bar and fireplace make hanging outdoors fun! Of course the view of the mountains encapsulates this grand space. Memories will be created here!

This modern kitchen in a high-rise offers breathtaking city views, including the iconic Space Needle. Sleek, light wood-toned cabinetry and white countertops create a clean and contemporary space. A glass dining table with unique wooden supports is set for a meal, complemented by stylish gray chairs. A modern chandelier illuminates the dining area, enhancing the sophisticated urban aesthetic.

Featured here are pictures of our recently completed commercial project in Edmond. The project involved the removal of over 500 cubic yards of native soil, rock and clay; to make a cut for an enormous retaining wall that we built with Pavestone Company gravity block, and for site prep to accommodate the pad needed for the store. City code required us to install a rail at the top of the wall for safety because of its height. Nearly 50 native trees and 150 shrubs from the local Total Environment Wholesale Nursery set this project in a fairly natural setting as well as a state of the art irrigation system to have adequate water to maintain the health of the plants and Canadian Valley Sod Farm turf installed. The store has had a record breaking launch and will prove to be a welcomed asset to the I-35 corridor. It was a pleasure working with the team from Whataburger and the attentive engineers from the City of Edmond.

Scaredy Cat Cottage Normally when we do a "Collected Kitchen" it is in a Log Cabin, Stone House or a Pennsylvania Farm House. Not often do you see a country style farm house in a Florida on the water setting. We did a collected kitchen in this house in whites, greys and curly maple, It has curly maple and soapstone counter tops and sink, with heart pine floors. The exterior doors were a dark mahogany. It has a very Southern "Farm House" feel. The owners were very involved in the design of the house. My country kitchen looks really awesome in this more high end setting. The Scaredy Cat Cottage was completed in November 2014. The low country style home was designed to look like a new "old" home and is situated on a beautiful riverfront site in Ormond Beach. The house has 3,350 SF of conditioned living space, a three car detached garage, ample storage in "bonus" attic spaces, and 700 SF of covered porch areas.The house is open and airy with many windows throughout, affording stunning views of the beautifully landscaped property, the swimming pool, outdoor living spaces, and of course, sunsets over the river. We also did the pantry, laundry, master bath,guest bath and powder room.

The Lakota Residence occupies a spectacular 10-acre site in the hills above northwest Portland, Oregon. The residence consists of a main house of nearly 10,000 sf and a caretakers cottage/guest house of 1,200 sf over a shop/garage. Both have been sited to capture the four mountain Cascade panorama plus views to the city and the Columbia River gorge while maintaining an internal privacy. The buildings are set in a highly manicured and refined immediate site set within a largely forested environment complete with a variety of wildlife. Successful business people, the owners desired an elegant but "edgey" retreat that would accommodate an active social life while still functional as "mission control" for their construction materials business. There are days at a time when business is conducted from Lakota. The three-level main house has been benched into an edge of the site. Entry to the middle or main floor occurs from the south with the entry framing distant views to Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier. Conceived as a ruin upon which a modernist house has been built, the radiused and largely opaque stone wall anchors a transparent steel and glass north elevation that consumes the view. Recreational spaces and garage occupy the lower floor while the upper houses sleeping areas at the west end and office functions to the east. Obsessive with their concern for detail, the owners were involved daily on site during the construction process. Much of the interiors were sketched on site and mocked up at full scale to test formal concepts. Eight years from site selection to move in, the Lakota Residence is a project of the old school process.

This architectural gesture not only brings daylight deep into the interior but also reinforces the sense of spatial continuity between floors. Warm Modern Interiors Inside, the home balances architectural clarity with warm materiality. Wide-plank oak floors run throughout the residence, creating visual cohesion and grounding the interiors with natural warmth. Custom walnut millwork—integrated shelving, cabinetry, and wall panels—introduces depth and texture while complementing the clean lines of the architecture. The Social Heart of the Home The main living level serves as the social centerpiece of the residence. The accompanying bathroom continues the home’s refined material palette. Marble surfaces, warm wood cabinetry, and brushed brass fixtures create a spa-like environment that balances luxury with tranquility. Additional bedrooms and flexible living spaces offer comfort for family and guests, each designed with the same attention to light, proportion, and material richness. Spaces for Entertaining Lower levels provide additional areas for gathering and entertaining. With a background in interior design, our client had a clear vision of the palette and classic look they desired in the garden. They wanted to achieve clean, simple lines, and to use restraint when choosing the planting palette. The simple planting scheme enhances the natural surroundings rather than creating distraction. Windlestraw is a picturesque Edwardian manor hotel overlooking the Tweed Valley, near Walkerburn in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland. One of the bathrooms in the manor was in the process of being refurbished when two layers of floor tiles were removed, unveiling an original Marble tiled floor dating back to the 1920s. After the top layers of tile had been removed the Marble was still covered in old adhesive and cement and although Marble is known for its quality and durability the hotel owner didn’t want the building contractor to proceed any further in case they damaged it. The owner was keen to restore the Marble floor as an original feature so we were called in to set the situation right. To restore the floor I used two processes known as milling and burnishing. Milling literally involves grinding down uneven or rough surfaces using very coarse, diamond encrusted pads. The pads are usually used to resolve lippage issues on natural stone but in this case we needed to use the very coarse abrasive pads to grind off the adhesive and cement. I used a set of three coarse milling pads rinsing with water between each pad and starting with a 50 grit pad, before moving on to 100 and 200 grit pads. This process was very effective and ground off the cement and adhesive, while also removing any lippage in the tiles to leave a completely flat surface. Milling leaves the surface of the Marble tiles clean but in a rough condition and this is where the second process Burnishing comes in. Similar to milling, burnishing focuses on achieving a polished finish with the application of ever finer grades of polishing pads and is often used to bring back the polish on Limestone and Travertine as well as Marble. Moving on to the burnishing, I worked my way through the four diamond encrusted pad system lubricating with a little water and again rinsing between each pad to remove the slurry. The grits go from Coarse (400 grit), Medium (800 grit), Fine (1500 grit) and then eventually Very Fine (3000 grit) and come in a 17” pad for use on a rotary floor machine and were applied twice in sequence to achieve a fantastic polished shine. The floor was given a final rinse and then dried with a wet-vacuum before we proceeded to seal the floor using Tile Doctor Shine Powder which is a crystallizing powder that is applied directly to the floor and worked in using a buffing pad fitted to a rotary machine. Shine Powder provides a very high shine (as you can see from the photos), along with a tough durable finish. On top of this, it is suitable for sealing all natural stone, including, of course, Marble, along with Limestone, Granite, Slate and Travertine. The customer was absolutely delighted with the results as were we although it’s now up to them to ensure the bathroom fitters take appropriate care when completing the room which I’m sure will look absolutely fantastic when complete and no doubt add to the allure of this magnificent hotel in the Scottish Borders. Selective thinning of existing vegetation allowed for framed views of the lake and Mount Sunapee beyond without sacrificing privacy for the homeowners or the environmental integrity of this steep lakeside site. A new driveway alignment improved the arrival experience and improved function. A large gas fire pit was set within a natural stone patio with easy access to interior gathering spaces and fantastic perched views of the lake and mountain. Native plantings set amongst oversized stone boulders were used throughout the landscape to further enhance the natural beauty of the property
