Windlestraw is a picturesque Edwardian manor hotel overlooking the Tweed Valley, near Walkerburn in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland. One of the bathrooms in the manor was in the process of being refurbished when two layers of floor tiles were removed, unveiling an original Marble tiled floor dating back to the 1920s. After the top layers of tile had been removed the Marble was still covered in old adhesive and cement and although Marble is known for its quality and durability the hotel owner didn’t want the building contractor to proceed any further in case they damaged it. The owner was keen to restore the Marble floor as an original feature so we were called in to set the situation right. To restore the floor I used two processes known as milling and burnishing. Milling literally involves grinding down uneven or rough surfaces using very coarse, diamond encrusted pads. The pads are usually used to resolve lippage issues on natural stone but in this case we needed to use the very coarse abrasive pads to grind off the adhesive and cement. I used a set of three coarse milling pads rinsing with water between each pad and starting with a 50 grit pad, before moving on to 100 and 200 grit pads. This process was very effective and ground off the cement and adhesive, while also removing any lippage in the tiles to leave a completely flat surface. Milling leaves the surface of the Marble tiles clean but in a rough condition and this is where the second process Burnishing comes in. Similar to milling, burnishing focuses on achieving a polished finish with the application of ever finer grades of polishing pads and is often used to bring back the polish on Limestone and Travertine as well as Marble. Moving on to the burnishing, I worked my way through the four diamond encrusted pad system lubricating with a little water and again rinsing between each pad to remove the slurry. The grits go from Coarse (400 grit), Medium (800 grit), Fine (1500 grit) and then eventually Very Fine (3000 grit) and come in a 17” pad for use on a rotary floor machine and were applied twice in sequence to achieve a fantastic polished shine. The floor was given a final rinse and then dried with a wet-vacuum before we proceeded to seal the floor using Tile Doctor Shine Powder which is a crystallizing powder that is applied directly to the floor and worked in using a buffing pad fitted to a rotary machine. Shine Powder provides a very high shine (as you can see from the photos), along with a tough durable finish. On top of this, it is suitable for sealing all natural stone, including, of course, Marble, along with Limestone, Granite, Slate and Travertine. The customer was absolutely delighted with the results as were we although it’s now up to them to ensure the bathroom fitters take appropriate care when completing the room which I’m sure will look absolutely fantastic when complete and no doubt add to the allure of this magnificent hotel in the Scottish Borders. The bedrooms are the only space that is probably most overlooked when it involves designing and adorning. One way Tt Interior Designs is working in creating a distinction is by incorporating a headboard, and sometimes; even a canopy with the mattress. Favourite notions set aside, you do not unavoidably want a headboard that is integrated with the bed; you can at all times use ideas that add a design factor to the mattress. At the same time opting for headboard designs, there are many significant things that want to be kept in intellect. The Lakota Residence occupies a spectacular 10-acre site in the hills above northwest Portland, Oregon. The residence consists of a main house of nearly 10,000 sf and a caretakers cottage/guest house of 1,200 sf over a shop/garage. Both have been sited to capture the four mountain Cascade panorama plus views to the city and the Columbia River gorge while maintaining an internal privacy. The buildings are set in a highly manicured and refined immediate site set within a largely forested environment complete with a variety of wildlife. Successful business people, the owners desired an elegant but "edgey" retreat that would accommodate an active social life while still functional as "mission control" for their construction materials business. There are days at a time when business is conducted from Lakota. The three-level main house has been benched into an edge of the site. Entry to the middle or main floor occurs from the south with the entry framing distant views to Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier. Conceived as a ruin upon which a modernist house has been built, the radiused and largely opaque stone wall anchors a transparent steel and glass north elevation that consumes the view. Recreational spaces and garage occupy the lower floor while the upper houses sleeping areas at the west end and office functions to the east. Obsessive with their concern for detail, the owners were involved daily on site during the construction process. Much of the interiors were sketched on site and mocked up at full scale to test formal concepts. Eight years from site selection to move in, the Lakota Residence is a project of the old school process.

Selective thinning of existing vegetation allowed for framed views of the lake and Mount Sunapee beyond without sacrificing privacy for the homeowners or the environmental integrity of this steep lakeside site. A new driveway alignment improved the arrival experience and improved function. A large gas fire pit was set within a natural stone patio with easy access to interior gathering spaces and fantastic perched views of the lake and mountain. Native plantings set amongst oversized stone boulders were used throughout the landscape to further enhance the natural beauty of the property

We updated the spaces by adding new wood flooring, lighting, paint, window treatments and new custom furniture. We created a functional lower level fit for a family movie night or game time. A large (and incredibly comfortable) leather sofa with custom ottoman wrapped in commercial fabric allow for the space to be used by grand kids of all ages. In addition, we transformed the owner’s bath suite into a luxe retreat, complete with an inviting soaking tub with a floor-mounted tub spout that makes you feel like you’re next to a waterfall. This 1980’s bathroom has been replaced with a modern, crisp aesthetic featuring white wood cabinets set against soft neutral gray walls, contemporary brushed nickel finishes, and beautiful LVP plank flooring in warm wood tones. The clean, simple lines throughout give this bath a spa-like feel. Even the mirrors were cleverly designed to set into the wall to maximize their function as medicine cabinets. This designer’s ideal is homeowners with a clear vision, set priorities, and values that align seamlessly with ours. These clients, an accomplished artist and the owner of a generational hops growing farm, were collaborative and trusting from the start. They conscientiously selected a team of Architect (Green Hammer), General Contractor (Cellar Ridge) and ATIID for furnishings and finishing touches. Each firm was able to meticulously manage their leg of the project, while collaborating wholistically with each other and the homeowners. The family farmhouse, lovingly named “Westwood,” was showing the wear one expects after serving a growing family for decades. The owner’s dream was to revive, open up, and breathe modern life into each space, while respecting the home’s heritage. One of our first collaborations was the light fixture that would grace the main two-story entry hall. HiiH Lights in Astoria, Oregon, was commissioned to bring “the function of light, the craft of paper, and the art of sculpture” to the home. Visiting the maker’s space – a massive barn on his coastal property – was such an inspiring adventure! Original work by the resident artist sets an ethereal tone in the space, and an antique bench handsomely blends the old with the new. A wall that divided the home’s living room and kitchen was removed, and the breezy and bright gathering room was born. Light walls, warm wood tones, cozy upholstery, clean lines and heritage elements create a welcoming atmosphere and invite lounging and conversation. The sun-drenched nook is the home’s main indoor dining area, with an extension table and sculpted chairs that are just right for family gatherings or morning rituals with the Sunday paper. The kitchen is a chef’s dream with every modern amenity, but its casual attitude is “let’s make a mess and eat!” The owner’s artwork graces the mantel over the new fireplace that was carved from a tree felled on the property, illustrating the thoughtful consideration of each element. The muted wool area rugs in the entryways and great room are hard-wearing for farm life, and the furniture’s classic lines, bold contrasting colors, deep seating and soft textures encourage cozy conversations or large group gatherings. The library is undoubtedly our favorite space in this home. Tucked in “speakeasy style” behind a hidden (wallpapered!) door in the moody wet bar, and drenched in deep green, the room offers a quiet retreat that hugs you in an embrace of books and family photos. The cozy settee nestled between the bookcases sits opposite a custom pair of modern cognac leather wing chairs. The area rug continues the storied look without the antique price tag with a piece from Loloi’s “Heritage Collection.” A little va-va-voom was requested for the powder bath and boy did we deliver! Custom wallpaper plays over original wainscotting and ceilings wrapped in more glorious green. The space evokes joy every time you open the door! A primary suite that would “transport us to another world” and be “classic yet modern, peaceful, collected and uncluttered” was a tall order. Our new furniture layout takes full advantage of the view of wine country hills and the Willamette River, welcomes fireside lounging, and serves as a calm respite for the lovely owners. Westwood Farmhouse truly was inspired by family, genuine love for home and graciousness for all who enter. This master bathroom is located on the basement slab level of their home, offering a sidewalk and patio for accessibility so creating a space that will be functional, as well as accessible in considering the future was necessary. Must have's: Ease of cleaning, accessibility, walk in bathroom, jetted tub, led partial moon mirror design, moody- contemporary feel. We created a walk in shower with large format tile for less grout along the full back wall with a subway tile feature to break up space between the vanity and the shower. This same subway theme, mixed from 3 tiles, was matched on the opposing tub wall with a mirrored niche and large format tile for continuity, and flow. The door was changed to a barndoor with a recessed mirror, this allows both function and provides a wide opening. The client can access the bathroom through either the hall or their master bathroom with a zero threshold entry into the bathroom and into the shower. The rounded niche mimics the rounded mirror. Custom dark stained and black wood set off this moody modern bathroom down to the exposed vanity bottle trap and plumb lines, with varying dimmers and lighting to set off this moody vibe. The homeowners were involved every step of the way, down to the custom quartzite countertop. Layout, space planning, design, rendering and plumbing provided by Angie Finton Designs. The amazing and wonderful styling decorations were completed by the homeowner.

This designer’s ideal is homeowners with a clear vision, set priorities, and values that align seamlessly with ours. These clients, an accomplished artist and the owner of a generational hops growing farm, were collaborative and trusting from the start. They conscientiously selected a team of Architect (Green Hammer), General Contractor (Cellar Ridge) and ATIID for furnishings and finishing touches. Each firm was able to meticulously manage their leg of the project, while collaborating wholistically with each other and the homeowners. The family farmhouse, lovingly named “Westwood,” was showing the wear one expects after serving a growing family for decades. The owner’s dream was to revive, open up, and breathe modern life into each space, while respecting the home’s heritage. One of our first collaborations was the light fixture that would grace the main two-story entry hall. HiiH Lights in Astoria, Oregon, was commissioned to bring “the function of light, the craft of paper, and the art of sculpture” to the home. Visiting the maker’s space – a massive barn on his coastal property – was such an inspiring adventure! Original work by the resident artist sets an ethereal tone in the space, and an antique bench handsomely blends the old with the new. A wall that divided the home’s living room and kitchen was removed, and the breezy and bright gathering room was born. Light walls, warm wood tones, cozy upholstery, clean lines and heritage elements create a welcoming atmosphere and invite lounging and conversation. The sun-drenched nook is the home’s main indoor dining area, with an extension table and sculpted chairs that are just right for family gatherings or morning rituals with the Sunday paper. The kitchen is a chef’s dream with every modern amenity, but its casual attitude is “let’s make a mess and eat!” The owner’s artwork graces the mantel over the new fireplace that was carved from a tree felled on the property, illustrating the thoughtful consideration of each element. The muted wool area rugs in the entryways and great room are hard-wearing for farm life, and the furniture’s classic lines, bold contrasting colors, deep seating and soft textures encourage cozy conversations or large group gatherings. The library is undoubtedly our favorite space in this home. Tucked in “speakeasy style” behind a hidden (wallpapered!) door in the moody wet bar, and drenched in deep green, the room offers a quiet retreat that hugs you in an embrace of books and family photos. The cozy settee nestled between the bookcases sits opposite a custom pair of modern cognac leather wing chairs. The area rug continues the storied look without the antique price tag with a piece from Loloi’s “Heritage Collection.” A little va-va-voom was requested for the powder bath and boy did we deliver! Custom wallpaper plays over original wainscotting and ceilings wrapped in more glorious green. The space evokes joy every time you open the door! A primary suite that would “transport us to another world” and be “classic yet modern, peaceful, collected and uncluttered” was a tall order. Our new furniture layout takes full advantage of the view of wine country hills and the Willamette River, welcomes fireside lounging, and serves as a calm respite for the lovely owners. Westwood Farmhouse truly was inspired by family, genuine love for home and graciousness for all who enter. The Whistle Hill Lot 9 Residence is a defining example of RWH Architect’s vision for a new architectural era in Southern New Hampshire. With its bold geometry, refined material palette, and thoughtfully layered rooflines, this home embodies contemporary living while setting a fresh design standard for the region. From the moment you approach the residence, the interplay of stone accents, vertical elements, and expansive windows establishes a striking yet inviting presence. Inside, a two-story entryway welcomes guests with light and volume, introducing an interior designed for both comfort and sophistication. The open-concept first floor seamlessly integrates the kitchen, great room, and dining/breakfast area, all flowing naturally toward a covered patio that extends the living space outdoors. A walk-in pantry, a private den, and a mudroom with built-in bench and hooks—conveniently located off the two-car attached garage, one bay featuring an oversized door—enhance the home’s functional rhythm. An expansive basement provides room for future recreation or storage, ensuring the home continues to evolve with the family who lives in it. The second floor hosts four well-proportioned bedrooms, including a master suite designed as a private retreat. The suite features a generous walk-in closet and a luxurious soaking tub, paired with thoughtfully arranged natural light to create a sense of calm and rejuvenation. Two full bathrooms and one half bathroom support the needs of modern family living while maintaining architectural cohesion throughout the home. Designing this residence presented several challenges that ultimately pushed the architectural expression forward. One key challenge was blending multiple rooflines into a unified modern aesthetic without losing the clarity of the home’s form. RWH resolved this by composing a series of carefully layered planes, each one calibrated to complement the others, resulting in a dynamic yet harmonious silhouette. Another challenge involved balancing the mix of exterior materials—such as stone, horizontal siding, and broad window openings—while maintaining a sense of order and visual stability. This was achieved by aligning materials with structural elements and strengthening vertical features, creating rhythm and cohesion across the façade. A further challenge was delivering an open, light-filled interior despite the structural demands of a two-story entry and several cantilevered forms. RWH overcame this through advanced framing techniques and discreet structural steel placement, allowing for expansive glazing and generous interior spans while preserving the home’s clean, uncluttered aesthetic. The Whistle Hill Lot 9 Residence stands as a testament to forward-thinking residential design and the evolution of architectural expectations in the area. Through innovative solutions, intentional detailing, and a commitment to elevating everyday living, RWH Architect has created a home that not only meets the needs of modern families but also sets a new benchmark for contemporary architecture in the region.

Photo by Alexandre Kühl Oliveira The rehabilitation project of the apartment is located in Lisbon, at Pascoal de Melo street, part of a mid-twentieth century building, in reasonable condition. The goal was to be able to feel the spaces always differently, in the way of use (cooking, sleeping, relaxing) and their interaction. The entire apartment has been designed taking into account the many sensorial appreciations. A set of points of view and volumes were established from the same space, reinforced by the chosen materials. On the kitchen, the project takes advantage of natural lighting, replacing the existing furniture for higher span, brighter and higher furniture and light-colored finishes that are great reflectors. In addition, the functional kitchen organization was re-designed in order to concentrate tall furniture at the entrance, freeing the area by the window to allow more light involvement. Three separate areas have been established: the cooking set with two countertops drawn from the wall to the floor, the kitchen sink closely resembles the high furniture of the kitchen and the dinning area by the window, which is more sheltered. The space once again aims to different points of view and the concept of voyeur is implicit.
