Inspiration for a timeless home design remodel in Minneapolis

This 3,000 sq. ft. West Village duplex, penthouse loft was designed as a one bedroom apartment. The space was created out of 2 factory buildings; the main floor is bisected by a three foot masonry wall. Rosenberg Kolb’s new design creates new openings in this wall and makes living, dining, kitchen and guestroom/study areas that are open to each other but can also be isolated with a series of cherrywood door-walls. With small windows on the main living floor, two large skylights bring daylight to the previously dark areas of the loft. Upstairs the master bedroom and bath have continuous windows with a spectacular view of the Hudson River. Rosenberg Kolb finished the bathroom floor and walls with glass mosaic tiles. The second level opens to two large deck areas commanding panoramic views of the Hudson River from the Statue of Liberty to the George Washington Bridge. The detailing here has a ‘nautical’ theme with weathered teak furniture and cedar decking, running lights, stainless cabling and circular steel stairs.

To transform this Southeast Denver kitchen from a dark isolated space to an open and integrated living area, we removed the wall between the kitchen and dining room as well as the support beam that remained from a previous remodel. By removing the support beam – which would have otherwise broken the sleek flow of the kitchen – we achieved a smooth transition throughout the kitchen. The inclusive room hosts clean, fresh cream and white with a splash of dark in the arabesque random backsplash which perfectly integrates the two-toned look of the darker island with the extra thick quartz counter and the of the off-white cabinets. The enhanced, low voltage lighting mixed with the added sparkle geometric crystal chandelier completes the finished look for the main room of the home.

House was enlarged from 80 sqm to 130 sqm to enlargment of de ground floor and attic through roof elevation. Energy performance from G-label (lowest) to A-label (highest), through isolation of walls, floors, windows (HR++), and roof. Total budget € 240.000.

The owners desired a space with the impact of a full home theater that wasn't isolated from the home. To achieve this we designed the wet bar into the home theater area, but still kept the theater area to the side so it had 3 walls and felt like a room. To finish it off we installed a 120" acoustically transparent screen and projector system, 7.1 surround sound, and all the A/V equipment needed to give a cinema experience at home. All the A/V equipment racks are hidden behind the screen and controlled by a single URC RF remote.

We worked alongside ACG Architects and accessible kitchen design specialist, Adam Thomas to create this stunning wheelchair-accessible kitchen so our client could prepare, cook and serve meals for her family independently. We designed this kitchen to have three different heights to enable our client and family to prepare and cook food easily. For example, the accessible worktop with a custom-made sink was made to be 870mm - the perfect height for a wheelchair user. Other key features in this design include wheelchair level ovens with tray slides that sit directly under two Neff Slide & Glide ovens, a Neff Steamer and a Microwave, so hot oven trays can be moved easily across each tray slide. A pull-out shelf allows for food/trays to be moved easily to the worktop level that was designed to be lower than standard for wheel-chair use. In front of the hob, there is also a protective lip at the edge of the worktop to stop a pan from boiling over onto the floor, or onto the client's lap. A stone sink was also custom made by Cosentino, so it wasn’t too deep for our client to reach into. The architects included wood slatting across the entire ground floor that creating a stunning feature in the kitchen space. Each slat was designed to run with precision over the door units - there were also toasters and pull-out drawers hidden behind this area which were designed to be isolated from the power when the doors were closed. Mixing different materials and textures in a kitchen space created interest and contrast. The striking mix of the stained wood slatting, Graphite Grey cabinetry and durable Dekton Keon worktops in this collaborative kitchen design creates a real wow factor. This kitchen design works for each family member with varying needs and heights so that it is a space that allows for the whole family to enjoy and create memories together. The project blended NILES’ technical execution with Ian’s hands-on finishing work, resulting in a studio where every corner has intention and every system supports a seamless, plug-and-play workflow. The structure began as a barn-style two-car garage with a second floor. After exploring several layouts and engineering options, we landed on a design that leveraged the high ceilings and existing footprint to create a dynamic and spacious acoustic environment. Generous daylight from surrounding windows connects the interior to the outdoors, while layered textures, warm tones, and custom finishes create a grounded yet inspiring atmosphere. The Control Room is fully isolated from the rest of the building with sound-reducing wall systems, a full soft-ceiling bass trap, tuned corner traps, treatment throughout, and full-lite doors for controlled transmission and visibility. Though modest in size, it delivers accurate monitoring and integrates smoothly with the larger live environment. Roasted Bean Studio was built to support any direction Ian pursues—from producing to mixing to live performance. The space provides the sonic palette and creative flexibility needed for a wide range of projects, offering a visually inspiring and acoustically reliable environment that empowers his work every day.

Nestled in an undeveloped thicket between two homes on Monmouth road, the Eastern corner of this client’s lot plunges ten feet downward into a city-designated stormwater collection ravine. Our client challenged us to design a home, referencing the Scandinavian modern style, that would account for this lot’s unique terrain and vegetation. Through iterative design, we produced four house forms angled to allow rainwater to naturally flow off of the roof and into a gravel-lined runoff area that drains into the ravine. Completely foregoing downspouts and gutters, the chosen design reflects the site’s topography, its mass changing in concert with the slope of the land. This two-story home is oriented around a central stacked staircase that descends into the basement and ascends to a second floor master bedroom with en-suite bathroom and walk-in closet. The main entrance—a triangular form subtracted from this home’s rectangular plan—opens to a kitchen and living space anchored with an oversized kitchen island. On the far side of the living space, a solid void form projects towards the backyard, referencing the entryway without mirroring it. Ground floor amenities include a bedroom, full bathroom, laundry area, office and attached garage. Among Architecture Office’s most conceptually rigorous projects, exterior windows are isolated to opportunities where natural light and a connection to the outdoors is desired. The Monmouth home is clad in black corrugated metal, its exposed foundations extending from the earth to highlight its form.

The original residence designed by Lyndon Buchanan Associates includes two pieces, the main house and a second building that houses a small workshop, guest room and bath. The addition is adjacent to existing work spaces, and includes shelving, drawers and nooks as well as work space that will be isolated, but adjacent to the rooms of the house, making it easier to use in connection with studio spaces and proximate to exhibition cases. The addition is sited on the north west side of the main house, in a location that does not disturb any views from other houses or from Sea Gate Road, and is designed to add a segment that provides better wind-shade, privacy and sound protection for the exterior decks on the southwest. Its roof is sloped down towards the north and into the wind, providing the most effective wind-shadow protection from the common winds, and minimizing walls facing north. Large openings on the south will bring in solar gain, to be stored in the concrete floors, which will also have radiant heating. The workspace will have access from both the house and the garden, and a small concrete pad outdoors. Project was done in collaboration with Donlyn Lyndon, FAIA.

With very subtle features, this backyard has stone walls to give the two fireplace areas a slight feeling of isolation in a very open backyard. All it took was two short, curved walls and a one-step platform.
