ELITE DESIGN AWARD WINNER 2016: This academic professor works from home, and decided to come up from the basement to take advantage of the natural light on the main floor. We turned this playroom into a fully functioning multi-person office space that allows customization and flexibility no matter the task. His research is far from square and boring – so we came up with a unique curvilinear countertop design using Maple desktops from Décor Cabinets, which truly add a touch of whimsy to the everyday. Against his wife’s preference, his creative process requires access to many types of material at once, so solutions like bi-fold cabinets and the large aluminum tambour doors allow him to organize loose papers, but shut away the mess when the day is done. Mixing a few different finishes creates enough interest so that staying in the same room for long periods is far from boring, and the acid etch mirror inserts give a frosted glass look without showing any of the mess inside. With this design, the move upstairs was a benefit for everyone.

In the remodel, we concealed the computer CPU and printer behind raised-panel cabinet doors below, adding a center pull-out keyboard drawer, lots of storage above, and open shelves for display. The pear oil painting is one of the very first pieces the designer purchased for the homeowners when they first started collaborating in 2004.

There is a total of 10 letter and legal size file drawers in the organized, upstairs, birch wood home office of a very active volunteer. Open book shelves have crown molding with an Egg and Dart insert which is repeated under the wood top. Applied flutes conceal the frames of the four shelf units. The window seat has operating drawers and a wood top, while the U shaped desk area is topped with Corian.

Mindi veneers and select mindi solids. Top surface comprised of leather panel with wood border. Two utility side drawers with full extension metal slides. Drop front center drawer for keyboard, laptop or tablet. Rustic antique brass hardware. Dentil molding. Tapered leg base. Some assembly required. Width 66" Depth 30" Height 31". The Multi-Purpose Folding Table by Studio Designs features a large 47.5-inch-wide work surface with a drop down platform that adjusts to 6 height positions.
