The homeowner felt closed-in with a small entry to the kitchen which blocked off all visual and audio connections to the rest of the first floor. The small and unimportant entry to the kitchen created a bottleneck of circulation between rooms. Our goal was to create an open connection between 1st floor rooms, make the kitchen a focal point and improve general circulation. We removed the major wall between the kitchen & dining room to open up the site lines and expose the full extent of the first floor. We created a new cased opening that framed the kitchen and made the rear Palladian style windows a focal point. White cabinetry was used to keep the kitchen bright and a sharp contrast against the wood floors and exposed brick. We painted the exposed wood beams white to highlight the hand-hewn character. The open kitchen has created a social connection throughout the entire first floor. The communal effect brings this family of four closer together for all occasions. The island table has become the hearth where the family begins and ends there day. It's the perfect room for breaking bread in the most casual and communal way.

• A busy family wanted to rejuvenate their entire first floor. As their family was growing, their spaces were getting more cramped and finding comfortable, usable space was no easy task. The goal of their remodel was to create a warm and inviting kitchen and family room, great room-like space that worked with the rest of the home’s floor plan. The focal point of the new kitchen is a large center island around which the family can gather to prepare meals. Exotic granite countertops and furniture quality light-colored cabinets provide a warm, inviting feel. Commercial-grade stainless steel appliances make this gourmet kitchen a great place to prepare large meals. A wide plank hardwood floor continues from the kitchen to the family room and beyond, tying the spaces together. The focal point of the family room is a beautiful stone fireplace hearth surrounded by built-in bookcases. Stunning craftsmanship created this beautiful wall of cabinetry which houses the home’s entertainment system. French doors lead out to the home’s deck and also let a lot of natural light into the space. From its beautiful, functional kitchen to its elegant, comfortable family room, this renovation achieved the homeowners’ goals. Solid oak dining table and black wood chairs make up the kitchen dining area in this space. The contemporary chandelier centers the kitchen table adjacent to the kitchen. Three modern pendants hang over the center island.

New open kitchen, dining and living area features Caesarstone countertops and a new island with combination of natural walnut lower cabinets and lacquer painted upper cabinets. Interior design by ODS Architecture included furniture selection of the bar stools which are Duda by Sossego in walnut. New dining table and matching chairs are the Up series by Huppe Magnolia. A Mooi Heracleum pendant is over the white glass top dining table..

Designed by Akram Aljahmi of Reico Kitchen & Bath in Woodbridge, VA in collaboration with Henry Gonazalez, this transitional style grey kitchen design features Merillat Masterpiece kitchen cabinets in the Martel door style with the painted finish Bonsai. Kitchen countertops are Q by MSI engineered quartz in the color Calacatta Laza. The kitchen tile backsplash features Altas Tile HRY 9514 Chevron White. Says the client, "We love the open layout, which has allowed so much natural light in the home. We have a place for everything! We love the drop down table for our meals, homework and entertaining...as well as the mixer stand. It is very convenient to have our heavy KitchenAid mixer stored in one area adjacent to all my baking equipment. Akram was very patient with me. The original kitchen was confined within four walls and our clients were eager to create a more open floor plan to provide more social interaction between the home chef (mom) and the 4 men in her life. By removing walls and borrowing a few extra square feet from the adjacent laundry room we were able to incorporate a 48” refrigerator and range, extra storage, a central island, increased workspaces and banquette seating into this modestly sized kitchen. This project was designed to provide both high function and high style while optimizing the influx of natural light from the enlarged kitchen windows. We maximized the space and created an open floor plan that improved traffic flow between the adjacent rooms. This little white cottage has the master bedroom, a playroom, guest bedroom and girls' bunk room upstairs, while downstairs there is a 1960s feel family room with an industrial modern style bar for the family's many parties and celebrations. Light hardwood floors flow from room to room on the first level. Oil-rubbed bronze light fixtures add a sense of eclectic elegance to the farmhouse setting. Horizontal stair railings give a modern touch to the farmhouse nostalgia. Stained wooden beams contrast beautifully with the crisp white tongue and groove ceiling. A barn door conceals a private, well-lit office or homework nook with bespoke shelving.
