Scott Simpson Large scale project began with the natural stone English style garden on the island with a water fountain as a central feature. The backyard was terraced to provide a more even surface for weekend sports with the children. The terracing was framed near the house with a 3 foot deep channel that will hold koi. On one side is a fire pit with amphitheater style seating and the other side opens up for the koi. There is an edible garden and butterfly garden as well. The entrance is punctuated with a large 10 foot diameter fountain. The entire landscape is on automated lighting with underwater lighting as well.

The landscaping features traditional Boxwood hedges along the foundation and gently undulating planting beds. The beds primarily include a groundcover layer of green liriope. There are pockets within the liriope filled with ferns, columbine, daylily and winter hellebore.

The backyard of this crafstman home was fully renovated and modernized to suit the families growing needs. Modern landscape design with a nod to traditional elements was a must. A raised flagstone terrace flush with the inner floor houses the lounging and dining areas which includes a barbecue with a limestone countertop and facing. Natural stone steps lead down to the garden where we find flagstone pathways, steppingstones and a shed that mimics the same details as the front of the home. The frontyard again had a modern feel with a nod to traditional because the facade of the home was left as is. Natural stone steps and pathways lead to the restored front porch. Evergreen hedging and meadow gardens give a sense of inner space when sitting on the porch.

Lagoon-side property in the Bel Marin Keys, Novato, CA. Entertaining and enjoying the views were a primary design goal for this project. The project includes a large camaru deck with built-in seating. The concrete steps and pavers lead down to the water's edge. I included a sunken patio on one side and a beautiful Buddha statue on the other, surrounded by succulents and other low-water, contemporary plantings. I also used Dymondia ground cover to create a natural pathways within the garden. This project was just completed. More photos will be included in Spring when the plantings fill in. Our client wanted lots of color to stand out against her white house. This front yard landscape is filled with evergreens, flowers, and ground cover.

Sculptural agaves, succulents and California native plants punctuate the front landscape complementing the “arroyo seco” rain garden studded with boulders and branches. The rain garden catches 50% of the stormwater runoff from the roof and infiltrates it into the soil. The remaining 50% of the runoff goes to a second rain garden in the back yard.
