Recently, we embarked on a design project to redesign the entry landscaping with the timeless beauty of a Japanese garden, emphasizing Tsukiyama earth mounding. This technique, which involves sculpting gentle, rolling hills to reflect natural landscapes, brought a new dimension of tranquility and depth to the space.
By integrating a minimalist planting aesthetic and organic, dissolving lines, we achieved a seamless fusion of serenity with modern sophistication. The transformed entryway now greets visitors with unfolding views that perfectly complements the home’s treehouse views into Nichols Arboretum.

Front yard landscape remodel. We removed the existing sidewalk from the entry and installed a paver sidewalk to match the paver driveway. We extended it to the street between 2 pillars for a more grand entrance. The rock was removed and replaced with synthetic grass, mounding, and desert plants. The yard took on a completely new look and fit much nicer in this Chandler custom home neighborhood.

We added this maple tree variety called Acer Ginnala "Ruby Slippers" to the front of the home.

"Purples, greens and silvers create an overall feeling of calm, while a gentle curve in the creekbed evokes a childlike curiosity to explore. This vivid splash of color and motion draws your gaze from the moment you enter the garden, and delights your senses throughout the space."

Note that the large, mounded accent grass in the previous photo is California native Deer Grass, not an arson grass (Feather, Fountain or Pampas Grass). While they have similar aesthetics, their performance is wildly different. Arson Grasses readily ignite and will escape gardens to increase the fire danger in neighboring wild spaces. While the golden wands of seed heads seen here may appear dry, they launch from a dense, hydrated mound of greenery during the rainy season, whereas arson grasses themselves will dry in summer heat. This closer view highlights the soft curve and textural beauty of the stone retaining wall, with its warm mix of cream and white tones and smooth beige cap. In front, a variety of young plants are just beginning to take root and will fill in to soften the wall and add seasonal interest. Behind it, the gently shaped grass mound adds a natural rise to the landscape, giving the front yard subtle dimension and flow. This shot showcases the balance of structure and softness that defines the refreshed design.

The entryway to our home along the driveway. There was a hill here so we added boulder and stack stone walls to terrace the hill and planted flowers. These are various Japanese Maples in fall color.

The low-mounding Oso Easy Paprika rose shines as a mass planting. 1-2' (0.3-0.6 m) tall and wide. Full sun. USDA Zones 3-9
