Impluvium Architecture Location: San Ramon, CA, USA This project was a direct referral from a friend. I was the Architect and helped coordinate with various sub-contractors. I also co-designed the project with various consultants including Interior and Landscape Design Almost always, and in this case, I do my best to draw out the creativity of my clients, even when they think that they are not creative. This house is a perfect example of that with much of the client's vision and culture infused into the house.

A white painted wood walk-in closet featuring dazzling built-in displays highlights jewelry, handbags, and shoes with a glass island countertop, custom velvet-lined trays, and LED accents. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry utilizes every square inch of useable wall space in style.

This boutique inspired closet has a double sided island with a waterfall edge, built-in dresser, handbag display cases and a shoe wall! LED lighting is featured behind all the glass inset doors and upper cabinet doors are inset with antique mirrored glass. A crystal chandelier is a showstopper!

What was once a tool box now hangs on the wall to house various necklaces. Even with such rugged origins, the display has a decidedly feminine appeal. "My girlfriend had come across these old tool boxes at an estate sale. The person that owned them painted the tools that hung on each hook, so it makes for a great story," says Jennifer. Inspiration for a large contemporary wooden u-shaped open and metal railing staircase remodel in Seattle

This is an exquisit home on Queen Anne Hill looking out at the city that has a large, beautiful wine cellar tucked under the stairs. The glass wall separates the mechanically cooled wine cellar from the entertainment area located a few feet below the cellar space. The concrete stairs and brick walls and ceiling gives the room a rustic, warehouse feel which lends well to showcase the wine cellar. The Premium Redwood wine racking holds over 1600 bottles of special wines. A variety of single deep, double deep and triple deep racking as well as an adjustable wood case storage unit and a wall of horizontal displays provides ample storage for various size bottles. This Milford French country home’s 2,500 sq. ft. basement transformation is just as extraordinary as it is warm and inviting. The M.J. Whelan design team, along with our clients, left no details out. This luxury basement is a beautiful blend of modern and rustic materials. A unique tray ceiling with a hardwood inset defines the space of the full bar. Brookhaven maple custom cabinets with a dark bistro finish and Cambria quartz countertops were used along with state of the art appliances. A brick backsplash and vintage pendant lights with new LED Edison bulbs add beautiful drama. The entertainment area features a custom built-in entertainment center designed specifically to our client’s wishes. It houses a large flat screen TV, lots of storage, display shelves and speakers hidden by speaker fabric. LED accent lighting was strategically installed to highlight this beautiful space. The entertaining area is open to the billiards room, featuring a another beautiful brick accent wall with a direct vent fireplace. The old ugly steel columns were beautifully disguised with raised panel moldings and were used to create and define the different spaces, even a hallway. The exercise room and game space are open to each other and features glass all around to keep it open to the rest of the lower level. Another brick accent wall was used in the game area with hardwood flooring while the exercise room has rubber flooring. The design also includes a rear foyer coming in from the back yard with cubbies and a custom barn door to separate that entry. A playroom and a dining area were also included in this fabulous luxurious family retreat. Stunning Provenza engineered hardwood in a weathered wire brushed combined with textured Fabrica carpet was used throughout most of the basement floor which is heated hydronically. Tile was used in the entry and the new bathroom. The details are endless! Our client’s selections of beautiful furnishings complete this luxurious finished basement.
