This vintage style bathroom was inspired by it's 1930's art deco roots. The goal was to recreate a space that felt like it was original. With lighting from Rejuvenation, tile from B&W tile and Kohler fixtures, this is a small bathroom that packs a design punch. This dark stained kitchen was completely transformed when we painted the upper cabinets in Sherwin Williams' 7008 "Alabaster" and the lower cabinets in Benjamin Moore's 445 "Greenwich Village". It's amazing what paint can do! Check out the "Before" photo to see the whole transformation.

The owner said "any color but white" for her farmhouse kitchen country kitchen. Earthy and elemental materials are selected for the home that reference the barn without directly mimicking it. Wooden members found inside the barn and from other barns bridge ceilings and are used in floors along with rustic slate adding to a sense of simplicity to the farmhouse design.

This lovely craftsman style home provided the perfect blank slate for us to elevate with our clients' personalities. On the "must haves" list was add color, make it approachable and cozy, and keep the sunshine pouring in. The front rooms open to each other, so creating a flow connecting the spaces was important - however, giving each space its own twist was priority. We selected a bold red paint on the exterior of the front door and a classic, chevron-patterned, textured grasscloth for the Entry to set the stage. Lighting and furnishings were layered in for added pops of color and functionality. The Living Room furnishings were selected to maximize seating and relaxation. We delivered on color with the addition of an uber comfy, lime green swivel chair and placed it bordering the Living Room and Dining Room so one could join both conversations. The Dining Room walls were painted a moody blue to create a backdrop for chic dinner parties and record listening sessions. Reupholstered vintage dining chairs brought their own stories to the table while a custom made buffet stores oodles of board games and records. Custom window treatments in both spaces added the necessary privacy while allowing the sun to shine through and create the perfect sunny spots for their sweet dog to nap. Adding in artwork provided the fun punctuations in these two areas. When my client mentioned that she loves to sit out on the deck with a cup of tea and listen to the birds sing, my first thought was - let's have them join you inside! We reimagined the Breakfast Nook seating and created a custom banquette to perch on amongst the sweetest bird themed wallpaper. The Breakfast Nook's color palette of olive green and saturated orange paired with the lovely natural light is calming and perfectly reflective of our client's disposition.

The client wanted to express her East Coast beach-y roots, and we wanted to do this without getting super theme-y. We utilized sunny yellow and yellow-greens, along with colors of the sea. We created a cozy, warm and uber-inviting sitting area. The drapes were sewn through Warehouse Fabrics, Inc., doing a fabulous job creating custom treatments (a teal linen weave with yellow brush trim), within a very tight budget. The seating was custom (Castellano Furniture of Portland); lime green chairs and a curvy sofa in yellow with that lime green welting & pillows. Also some playful Blue and yellow pillow fabric (Kravet) was the genuine inspiration for character and color scheme. The rug, by FLOR of Portland (thanks Shaina) is meant to evoke a beach blanket. Oh, and the glass jar filled with sand and sand dollars. . . well, ok, we are giving a nod to the sea.

Our pioneer project, Casita de Tierra in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, showcases the natural building techniques of a rubble trench foundation, earthbag construction, natural plasters, earthen floors, and a composting toilet. Our earthbag wall system consists of locally available, cost-efficient, polypropylene bags that are filled with a formula of clay and aggregate unearthed from our building site. The bags are stacked like bricks in running bonds, which are strengthened by courses of barbed wire laid between each row, and tamped into place. The walls are then plastered with a mix composed of clay, sand, soil and straw, and are followed by gypsum and lime renders to create attractive walls. The casita exhibits a load-bearing wall system demonstrating that thick earthen walls, with no rebar or cement, can support a roofing structure. We, also, installed earthen floors, created an indoor dry-composting toilet system, utilized local woods for the furniture, routed all grey water to the outdoor garden, and maximized air flow by including cross-ventilating screened windows below the natural palm frond and cane roof. Casita de Tierra exemplifies an economically efficient, structurally sound, aesthetically pleasing, environmentally kind, and socially responsible home.
