Goals
While their home provided them with enough square footage, the original layout caused for many rooms to be underutilized. The closed off kitchen and dining room were disconnected from the other common spaces of the home causing problems with circulation and limited sight-lines. A tucked-away powder room was also inaccessible from the entryway and main living spaces in the house.
Our Design Solution
We sought out to improve the functionality of this home by opening up walls, relocating rooms, and connecting the entryway to the mudroom. By moving the kitchen into the formerly over-sized family room, it was able to really become the heart of the home with access from all of the other rooms in the house. Meanwhile, the adjacent family room was made into a cozy, comfortable space with updated fireplace and new cathedral style ceiling with skylights. The powder room was relocated to be off of the entry, making it more accessible for guests.
A transitional style with rustic accents was used throughout the remodel for a cohesive first floor design. White and black cabinets were complimented with brass hardware and custom wood features, including a hood top and accent wall over the fireplace. Between each room, walls were thickened and archway were put in place, providing the home with even more character.

A charming front porch leads you into this home where you immediately are greeted by the expansive great room with optional see-through fireplace into hearth area. The study with optional coffered ceiling could serve as 4th bedroom. The open kitchen, dining area, and hearth area allows for plenty of natural light. A secluded first-floor owner's suite with optional tray ceiling includes a private bath with double bowl vanity and expansive closet. The 2nd floor boasts 2 other bedrooms, a full bath, and a large loft. An optional outdoor living area, accessible from the dining area, is available as well. This project began with the goal of updating both style and function to allow for improved ease of use for a wheelchair. The previous space was overstuffed with an island that didn't really fit, an over-sized fridge in a location that complicated a primary doorway, and a 42" tall high bar that was inaccessible from a wheelchair. Our clients desired a space that would improve wheelchair use for both cooking or just being in the room, yet did not look like an ADA space. It became a story of less is more, and subtle, thoughtful changes from a standard design.
After working through options, we designed an open floorplan that provided a galley kitchen function with a full 5 ft walkway by use of a peninsula open to the family den. This peninsula is highlighted by a drop down, table-height countertop wrapping the end and long backside that is now accessible to all members of the family by providing a perfect height for a flexible workstation in a wheelchair or comfortable entertaining on the backside. We then dropped the height for cooking at the new induction cooktop and created knee space below. Further, we specified an apron front sink that brings the sink closer in reach than a traditional undermount sink that would have countertop rimming in front. An articulating faucet with no limitations on reach provides full range of access in the sink. The ovens and microwave were also situated at a height comfortable for use from a wheelchair. Where a refrigerator used to block the doorway, a pull out is now located giving easy access to dry goods for cooks at all heights. Every element within the space was considered for the impact to our homes occupants - wheelchair or not, even the doorswing on the microwave.
Now our client has a kitchen that every member of the family can use and be a part of. Simple design, with a well-thought out plan, makes a difference in the lives of another family.

Our good friend Gerda is an avid photographer with a special interest in nature photography and butterflies. She also suffers from a lung disease that sometimes leaves her less mobile and able to head out to pursue this passion. A garden to take pictures in, even when you're not up to heading further out into the world. That was the main goal of this garden. With limited means and the use of affordable materials we created a wheel chair friendly garden that offers ample space for both human and wild life.

This early 70s 5 bedroom home underwent a complete overhaul which included new flooring throughout, new interior and entry doors, front patio tile, a complete kitchen remodel opening the kitchen to living spaces, master suite update with expanded bathroom and walk-in closet and kids bathroom refresh. Limited budget project for this expanded footprint kitchen meant using stock cabinetry throughout, with Semi-Handmade cladding for island for a pop of color. A 2-sided access pantry provided a cos-effective expansive storage solution. The dining space will receive a custom cushion for the window seat: the table expands to seat extended family. Behind the dining area is the step down family room and den with TV and fireplace.

These new homeowners needed some more storage and going vertical was the way to achieve that. We also converted the island to pull out drawers inside the cabinets to allow for mare pantry item storage. Limited counter space was an issue so lifting the microwave off the counter was key. The existing lower cabinets were a great stepping stone for everything else we incorporated into this kitchen, my clients love to cook and create coctails so we wanted to have open shelves to give a homey lived in feel and a real working kitchen. added a few upper cabinets to give some closed storage for the less pretty items but can still access them freely. i loved the way this turned out!

When the Landscape design build presentation had an accompanying Landscape Lighting design that would be implemented all at the same time. Not only was that a plus for the client but almost a must have as the masonry Columns, walls and paver driveway limited access to the thoughts of lighting at a later phase. Atleast conduits, wiring and transformer locations would have to be at a minimum placed onsite. After an initial consultation and walk around to let the homeowners know we were thinking about all the facets of project and that it was a one stop shop for design, build and light. We were up for the challenge and thrilled to hear the approval and we were gearing up to be able to deliver a complete project.

This Joliet IL client wanted a beautiful new kitchen, but had limited resources to spend.
The solution? A budget-friendly cabinet line and a value color granite.
The results? An open and modern kitchen, with great functionality and clean, timeless lines.
Wolf Builder’s Mark cabinetry was used, in the classic Sierra door style. The Maple with Harvest Brown stain is a rich, warm and tone that compliments the existing flooring and casings. The tall pantry cabinet, lazy susan in the corner, great island, and 42” tall wall cabinets all provide great storage options. The Bainbrook Brown granite offers shades of white, gray, black and brown, to perfectly tie together the cabinets and floor tiles. Final touches include a stylish Moen Arbor faucet, and contemporary easy-access stainless steel handles.
A priceless look, on a very strict budget!
