Miraculously the owner was open to the challenge of trying, just for fun, to see if that past could be recaptured without compromising present-day comforts. We all learned in the process that the old can be as luxuriously commodious as anything the “modern” can promise.

Outside, A new southern “dining room” was designed for warm summer evening gatherings under a heavy-timber trellis. The focus, opposite water and island views, is a metal perforated screen. The final screen is composed of the lyrics from a Joe Cocker song of great meaning to the owners, cut from ½” marine bronze, set into dark-fired brick. “Oh My Darling, Be Home Soon….” Natural daylight and high-efficiency lighting are central players as in any gallery. I didn’t want it to be a place where I had to say, ‘No, no, no. And we can enjoy ourselves here, because that room upstairs, we almost never went in. Our client was a true audiophile and wanted to immerse himself into a theater environment while keeping the aesthetic of the rest of the space. Our approach was to build an incredible foundation for a dedicated theater using some the world's best speakers and amplifiers; then compliment the home with acoustically treated pictures and audio panels. The outcome was placing audio exactly where is should be for the listener with no reflective sound where it shouldn't be. This media room features a ceiling mounted video projector and a acoustically transparent projection screen which allows the front three speakers to be placed behind the screen. In-wall and in-ceiling speakers fill the room with sound. Acoustic paneling allows the listener to hear more of the sound directly from the speakers, rather than the residual sound that could bounce off several walls before it arrives to the listener and prevents sound from traveling to other rooms.
