The family room was conceived as a double-height architectural volume anchored by a monolithic stone fireplace and integrated millwork niches. Ceiling pitch, vertical planes, and material transitions were addressed during the design selection phase to ensure the scale of the architecture remained balanced once furnished. Soft, low-profile seating was selected to maintain clear sightlines across the room while allowing the fireplace surround and wood-lined alcoves to remain the primary focal elements. The furniture plan creates a structured conversational arrangement without interrupting circulation or visual flow. Textural layering — woven upholstery, stone, wood paneling, and subtle metal accents — reinforces warmth within the height and openness of the space. The result is a family room that reads as composed architecture first, furnishing second: grounded, scaled, and designed to support both gathering and daily use without visual noise.

A pre-war West Village bachelor pad inspired by classic mid-century modern designs, mixed with some industrial, traveled, and street style influences. Our client took inspiration from both his travels as well as his city (NY!), and we really wanted to incorporate that into the design. For the living room we painted the walls a warm but light grey, and we mixed some more rustic furniture elements, (like the reclaimed wood coffee table) with some classic mid-century pieces (like the womb chair) to create a multi-functional kitchen/living/dining space. Using a versatile kitchen cart with a mirror above it, we created a small bar area, which was definitely on our client's wish list! Photos by Matthew Williams

Sophisiticated yet serene, the living room had only one wall to place all the necessary accoutrements for comfortable living and entertaining. The graphite color continues through the dining area into the kitchen to unify the space while the area rug grounds the seating area and separates it from the rest of the room. Two recliners face the wall-mounted TV and fireplace. Views can be appreciated from the swivel chairs and sofa. The sideboard subtly divides the living from dining areas. Photo by John Stillman

Much consideration was given to views that surround the home. The home sits on a reservoir and has breathtaking views from almost every room that the designers wanted to honor.

The formal living room features a custom gray Hollywood Regency style sofa from Gilded Home. Barbara Barry Chairs with textured white fabric, antique mirrored coffee table with walnut trim and carved white wool area rug provide texture and interest. The play of light and shadow is the main idea of this composition. As you enter this luxurious living room, you immediately notice a beautiful U-shaped sofa with some magnificent armchairs and an elegant coffee table. This island in the center of the living room looks great against the background of the huge windows that allow light to easily enter the living room space. Sparkling wall surfaces and mirrors add some light to this living room interior as well.
