The "Dream of the '90s" was alive in this industrial loft condo before Neil Kelly Portland Design Consultant Erika Altenhofen got her hands on it. The 1910 brick and timber building was converted to condominiums in 1996. No new roof penetrations could be made, so we were tasked with creating a new kitchen in the existing footprint. Erika's design and material selections embrace and enhance the historic architecture, bringing in a warmth that is rare in industrial spaces like these. Among her favorite elements are the beautiful black soapstone counter tops, the RH medieval chandelier, concrete apron-front sink, and Pratt & Larson tile backsplash

This walnut kitchen was built in collaboration with Union Studio for a discerning couple in Mill Valley. The hand-hewned cabinetry and custom steel pulls complement the exposed brick retained from original structure's former life as the Carnegie Library in Mill Valley. The design challenge for this loft located in a manufacturing building dating to the late 19th Century was to update it with a more contemporary, modern design, renovate the kitchen and bath, and unify the space while respecting the building’s industrial origins. By rethinking existing spaces and contrasting the rough industrial shell of the building with a sleek modernist interior, the Feinmann team fulfilled the unrealized potential of the space. Working closely with the homeowners, sophisticated materials were chosen to complement a sleek design and completely change the way one experiences the space. For safety, selection of of a stainless steel post and handrail with stainless steel cable was installed preserving the open feel of the loft space and created the strong connection between loft and downstairs living space. In the kitchen, other material choices created the desired contemporary look: custom cabinetry that shows off the wood grain, panelized appliances, crisp white Corian countertops and gunmetal ceramic tiles. In the bath, a simple tub with just sheet of glass instead of a shower curtain keeps the small bath feeling as open as possible. Throughout, a concrete micro-topped floor with multi-color undertones reiterates the building’s industrial origins. Sleek horizontal lines add to the clean modern aesthetic. Modern family loft renovation. A young couple starting a family in the city purchased this two story loft in Boston's South End. Built in the 1990's, the loft was ready for updates. ZED transformed the space, creating a fresh new look and greatly increasing its functionality to accommodate an expanding family within an urban setting. We gave this modern New York City loft a customized interior design. We wanted the space to be eye-catching yet elegant and uncluttered, so we focused on the unique walls and lighting. The walls are dressed in a custom plaster from Serpentine Studio, which so perfectly matches the Stone Source countertops. Glistening white flat panel cabinets and a glazed backsplash contrast beautifully with the matte gray color palette. Finally, we added in subtle metallic accents through the pendant lighting and Suite NY bar stools.

High function for an avid cook with storage, durability and enough beauty to be a part of the living room. The high gloss foil island in deep blue is an inviting place to hang out.
