Chicken coop/vegetable garden complex is hardworking and beautiful. Daylilies, geranium and gaillardia soften the front of the practical garden. Multiple layers of fencing keep out deer and raptors, and allows the owners' to control where the chickens can go. Rustic design gives a nod to the local rural community.

An organic vegetable garden with an ocean view is luxury in its purest form. Two 15-foot by 4-foot raised planters were made out of redwood, and only the exteriors were stained to ensure no leeching occurs into the food.

Austin Ganim Landscape Design, LLC designed this vegetable garden for an avid gardener. Edible marigolds surround this vegetable garden enclosure, composed of a garden arbor and white square picket fence, installed by Walpole Outdoors.

This is an urban single family home situated on a narrow lot that is about 1/8 of an acre and is only 2 blocks from the Pacific Ocean. I designed a completely new garden and installed everything along with the client’s help. The garden I designed consisted of an ornamental grass garden, a xeriscape garden with decomposed granite mounds, fruit trees and shrubs located throughout, a jungle forest garden, and raised brick vegetable beds in the rear. Previously, there was a wood deck covering almost the entire property that was removed by the owner. We installed root guard around all of the walkways. I installed the raised brick vegetable beds and walkways around the vegetable beds. Many of the plants were chosen to provide food and habitat for pollinators as well. Situated in old Palo Alto, CA, this historic 1905 Craftsman style home now has a stunning landscape to match its custom hand-crafted interior. Our firm had a blank slate with the landscape, and carved out a number of spaces that this young and vibrant family could use for gathering, entertaining, dining, gardening and general relaxation. Mature screen planting, colorful perennials, citrus trees, ornamental grasses, and lots of depth and texture are found throughout the many planting beds. In effort to conserve water, the main open spaces were covered with a foot friendly, decorative gravel. Giving the family a great space for large gatherings, all while saving water.

When asked to design a beach home with curving architecture and accent features reminiscent of driftwood and old ships in Alys Beach, Fla., Bill Musso, principle at Musso Design Group based in Atlanta, Ga., opted to bring low country style to the Florida panhandle. Beginning with the exterior, bright splashes of color are emphasized in the courtyard where the palette and split brick floor might transport the visitor to New Orleans. With bougainvillea growing around the archway, the outdoor space called for more intense color and pieces. The courtyard furniture was actually made from recycled milk jugs that had been fashioned into molded resin and woven. The courtyard table was a ceramic planter that was turned upside down and topped with a sheet of glass.

An art gallery was designed with low windows to allow natural light to permeate while protecting the sensitive art from harmful direct sunlight. An expansive back yard landscape with several mature oak trees and a stunning Golden Locust tree has been transformed into a welcoming outdoor retreat. The renovations include a wraparound deck, an expansive travertine natural stone patio, stairways and pathways along with concrete retaining walls and column accents with dramatic planters. The pathways meander throughout the landscape... some with travertine stepping stones and gravel and those below the majestic oaks left natural with fallen leaves. Raised vegetable beds and fruit trees occupy some of the sunniest areas of the landscape. A variety of low-water and low-maintenance plants for both sunny and shady areas include several succulents, grasses, CA natives and other site-appropriate Mediterranean plants complimented by a variety of boulders. Potting mixes for container gardens need to drain freely, but still retain moisture. My base potting soil mix contains (clockwise from upper left) coarse builder's sand, high-quality organic compost or worm castings, coconut coir, and small lava rock. With porches on every side, the “Georgetown” is designed for enjoying the natural surroundings. The main level of the home is characterized by wide open spaces, with connected kitchen, dining, and living areas, all leading onto the various outdoor patios. The main floor master bedroom occupies one entire wing of the home, along with an additional bedroom suite. The upper level features two bedroom suites and a bunk room, with space over the detached garage providing a private guest suite.
