This project was a part of the 2017 Decorators' Showhouse in Columbus, Ohio. Twelve designers each created a room within the Columbus Museum of Art, making this the first showhouse to take place within a museum. Each designer was allowed to use a piece of artwork from the museum's collection in their space. The intent of this design was to create a contemporary, gender-neutral nursery with touches of mid-century modern style. Mid-century modern design is sleek, simple, functional and bright. Here, the combination of vintage and contemporary furnishings and accessories all come together to create a space that is calm, yet inspires creative play. The artwork, California Landscape by Stanton Macdonald-Wright, sets this tone. His modern abstract, devoid of illustration uses blocks of color to create space and form. This idea of geometric abstracts is repeated throughout the design of the room. Interesting shapes that can be manipulated with eye or hand are very fitting for a nursery. This is a space where a child can dream and play, grow and learn, and also rest. Photo by Alan Barry. Working in corroboration with Karen Ferreyra Interiors, I created this custom linear wall finish by applying custom-colored metallic plaster with trowels and manipulating the design by hand.

The slightly curved staircase from the entry way leads down to the unfinished basement of this home. In order to stay true to the architectural elements found in an 
southwestern home, the walls were curved throughout and adorned in 6 
inch, knotty alder wood trim. Although these design elements are 
beautiful, they presented great challenges to the trim carpenters, since 
the thick wood trim could not be manipulated around the curves. To remedy the problem, a 8 inch piece of rubber flex trim was cut to the 6 inch trim size and faux painted to match the knotty alder trim. As you can see, the finished product turned out beautiful and you could not tell the faux painted trim from the natural wood trim. Paul Kohlman Photography

Trendy exterior home photo in Houston

The kitchen and family room were separated by a generous opening with casing that was too formal for the space and hampered views to the backyard. The clients wished for an open concept plan that incorporated the family room. Removing the wall separating the kitchen from the family room was a given to make two spaces feel like one. A dropped ceiling over the kitchen table became the inspiration to create soffits throughout the new space, adding interest to the ceiling design while defining the two rooms. The old stone fireplace was replaced with a clean marble façade and cabinetry on either side was manipulated to help center the previously off-center fireplace box. Removing the wall also allowed us to expand the footprint of the new kitchen and take advantage of a long wall for new appliances and storage. Photo: Peter Krupenye

An original Ziegler Garage door design that has been one of our best selling and most talked about designs. The clean lines and square edges really shows the modern contemporary look and the stainless steel accent makes this door pop. This is what we call the modern 007, not only is this one of our best selling designs, it is also one of the most economical real wood doors in our product line. In order to accomplish this contemporary look we used a marine grade ply with a thick mahogany veneer for the wood base and then cut and folded stainless steel strips and embedded them into the face leaving this smooth seamless finish to this modern contemporary door and gate. Selecting a dark color stain for the wooden garage door made a fantastic contrast against the home's light white stucco and brick walls while pulling in some of the low slung roof tonalities.
