This project was a part of the 2017 Decorators' Showhouse in Columbus, Ohio. Twelve designers each created a room within the Columbus Museum of Art, making this the first showhouse to take place within a museum. Each designer was allowed to use a piece of artwork from the museum's collection in their space. The intent of this design was to create a contemporary, gender-neutral nursery with touches of mid-century modern style. Mid-century modern design is sleek, simple, functional and bright. Here, the combination of vintage and contemporary furnishings and accessories all come together to create a space that is calm, yet inspires creative play. The artwork, California Landscape by Stanton Macdonald-Wright, sets this tone. His modern abstract, devoid of illustration uses blocks of color to create space and form. This idea of geometric abstracts is repeated throughout the design of the room. Interesting shapes that can be manipulated with eye or hand are very fitting for a nursery. This is a space where a child can dream and play, grow and learn, and also rest. Inspiration for a contemporary exterior home remodel in Houston

This unique home on edge of downtown Calgary is a longer term project we had the privilege to design and implement. We were involved early in the extensive renovation process to provide input on design elements and help resolve logistical issues on the site. Among the many elements in the garden a large water feature was desired, in part to help mask traffic noise, as well as numerous areas to entertain, relax, and explore. Both large and dry-pack Rundlestone was utilized along with stamped concrete for much of the hardscaping. The slope was manipulated to construct the water feature which includes numerous falls, a stream, pond and bio-filter. Stucco walls were constructed on part of the property and river-stone walls were reconstructed to match the existing walls from the previous development. Extensive plantings throughout the grounds highlight and accent the hardscape and were designed for four seasons of interest.

The client was anticipating a 'country cottage' feel to his home when he purchased it. They were never really happy with it, until the pool showed up! The pool needed to feel like a meandering stream as it made it's way down to the lower level. Views were important, and keeping the rear pond view was paramount! So, by manipulating the shape of the pool, adding an oversize flag stone shelf in the water, and providing a soothing 'trickling' waterfall, the image was complete! From the rear patio it looks and feels like you are sitting next to a back country stream!

The architecture of the Karoo Wilderness Center is a result of a thorough process of investigation into the origins and character of the Karoo landscape and the flora and fauna that result from its particular qualities. The tectonic events that produced the specific topography of the site, trajectories of water runoff, wind movement, soil composition, and effects of plant and animal species on the landscape have converged to create the conditions of the site chosen for the Center. Each of these factors have in turn been subject to the impact of human inhabitation and vernacular building practices, amplified in recent generations to a harmful degree by shortsighted agricultural strategies and their associated effects of overgrazing, water over-manipulation and erosion. Fundamental to the architectural response is the premise that the human species is an inherent part of the conditions that comprise and affect the landscape. The significance of the Center, enhanced and informed by the activities that occur within and as an extension of it, lies in the co-dependence of the Center and the ecosystem as inherently bound entities. The architecture of the Center is intended to make evident the natural processes of the Karoo and establish a new precedent for building within and through an ecosystem defined by dynamic flux.

Natural modernism for a home on the park. A prominent Chicago lawyer and his beloved dogs live in this Modern Chicago Greystone. We consulted with Wheeler Kearns Architecture to create a warm and welcoming interior architecture that integrates seamlessly with the home’s modernist exterior and natural surroundings. Natural light and earthy materials, such as active limestones, warm woods, and reflective glass tiles, are used to comforting effect in the interior spaces. Wood window frames manipulate the play of light and highlight unobstructed views to Lincoln Park and Lake Michigan. Making a real impression by designing & building with exceptional people is exactly the effect JL Design & the client as owner-builder have achieved with “Scarborough House” in Scarborough, NSW. The brief required the dwelling to take maximum advantage of stunning views over the ocean & nearby escarpment cliffs. The residence was also to be a contemporary modernist four bedroom family dwelling, maximising built external living & pool areas. The client was extensively involved with the overall design, & carried out material selection, interior detailing and selection of fixtures and fittings. This collective method guaranteed a result where the client as the builder, through continued personal investment throughout the design and construction achieved a stunning result. The concrete, steelwork, windows, timber & various forms of cladding, joinery and concealed lighting are all custom made hand crafted elements. The design called for minimal tolerances, requiring a high level of skill and cooperation between trades. “Scarborough House” features BlueScope Colorbond monument matt ribbed wall cladding with rendered & ‘rendered look’ areas in off-white. A vertical feature hardwood timber screen to the side of the entry softens the ‘industrial’ feel, giving a modernist external appearance. Carefully calculated overhangs allow a passive solar solution to heating & cooling, with efficient reverse-cycle air conditioning required only during weather extremes. Internally, timber floors to the upper living areas give a feel of comfort & warmth. The warm, substantial character of the dwelling is carefully composed by means of the clarity of the detailing, a palette of tactical natural materials and the careful manipulation of light.

The kitchen and family room were separated by a generous opening with casing that was too formal for the space and hampered views to the backyard. The clients wished for an open concept plan that incorporated the family room. Removing the wall separating the kitchen from the family room was a given to make two spaces feel like one. A dropped ceiling over the kitchen table became the inspiration to create soffits throughout the new space, adding interest to the ceiling design while defining the two rooms. The old stone fireplace was replaced with a clean marble façade and cabinetry on either side was manipulated to help center the previously off-center fireplace box.
