When I bought my house in May 2014, there was one thing I really didn’t like about it – the 1950s bathroom complete with pink tile and mismatched gaudy fixtures was absolutely hideous. I knew redoing the bathroom would be a big, expensive project, so I vowed to just live with it while I fixed up parts of the house that were easier to update, such as putting a fresh coat of paint on the walls and updating the curtains (which I still haven’t done, by the way). Well my first winter in the new house turned out to be a bad one, and in February 2015, I noticed water stains on the walls and ceiling of the second bedroom that only got worse and worse each day. The water damage quickly spread to other rooms, and when contractors came to the house to access and fix the damage, they discovered moisture behind the pink tiled walls of my bathroom. And so started the bathroom remodel. Start to finish, this project took close to six months, due to going back and forth with insurance and difficulty finding a contractor I liked. I lived without a shower for at least four of those months, showering at the gym where I worked or in a pop-up tent in my backyard once it was warm enough out. My friend Eric and I demoed the bathroom and for the remodel, I picked out all of the design components and had a local contractor, Fred Haas do the work. I kept the original layout – as my bathroom was small to begin with and it was both impractical and expensive to start moving things around – but just about everything else about the bathroom is new, except for maybe the window and door. New tub, sink, and toilet, new tile floor and shower surround, new walls and ceiling, fresh paint, new fixtures and mirror, updated lighting, and a better ventilation system were all added. On your left upon entering is the sizeable and spacious walk-in closet, complete with adjustable shelves and cozy window bench. Polished chrome grab bars are strategically placed throughout the bathroom, an ADA height compliant toilet and custom height linen cabinet made mobility accessibility a key component for this project, yet no beauty was sacrificed to make this happen. This bathroom and closet are now the perfect pairing of both our clients’ desires in one charming sea blown setting.

The low budget, family house project posed a challenge of conveniently arranging multiple rooms in small area. Pre-reconstruction edges of the walls were toned down, in order to conform to the new, minimalistic aesthetics and letting two colors prevail in the interior was also the part of the concept. The white walls and the large mirrors make the space appear sizable. The wooden components of the interior bring an unifying ambience into play. The technical lighting illuminates the rooms without distracting the eye. Situated in the picturesque Encino Hills, this project involved the remodeling of two bathrooms in a mid-century style home, staying true to the character of the house while integrating modern luxuries. The primary bathroom has been transformed into an open oasis, featuring a spacious, curbless walk-in shower that exudes luxury and openness. The bathroom floor and the shower floor are seamlessly connected with terrazzo tile, complemented by a 60" linear brass shower drain. The shower and bathroom walls showcase a striking 3-dimensional linear texture with Ribbonwood Walnut tiles. A large niche with custom shelving and beautifully finished edges in white quartz slab adds a touch of sophistication. A standout feature of the shower is the large picture window offering stunning views of the natural green surroundings, equipped with smart tinted glass that can switch between clear and fogged for privacy at the touch of a button. The luxurious components of the primary bathroom include a brass shower system with both shower head and rain shower heads, controlled by a sophisticated system. The Toto toilet and Toto washlet system offer modern conveniences such as auto flush and a smart bidet feature, enhancing the contemporary design. To maintain the mid-century charm, the original vanity and pendant lights were preserved and refreshed with a new luxury white quartz countertop, new sinks, and new brass faucets. About a year after purchasing this structure, these clients engaged us to to start the process of designing and engineering a expansion of this little cottage into a larger home where they could put down roots and start a family. Our clients looked long and hard for the perfect outdoor setting and after months of searching, they found a little post-war cottage on a lake just east of Redmond, Washington. Our solution is a classic upper level addition that takes in the views of its alpine lake setting. The existing basement level was repurposed as the recreation hub of the house with a game area, media center, guest suite and storage for a large inventory of outdoor & boating gear. The main level was redesigned in a more family friendly format with a powder room, bedroom, vaulted great room, pantry and gourmet kitchen. The upper level is the private domain of the Master Suite and high tech hub. Because our clients work in the tech industry, a large home office that allows them to work remotely was an important component of their home's program. The master suite includes a large walk-in closet, small laundry, sleeping area and 5-piece master bath. The exterior of the house includes a covered porch that wraps around this level and leads to an expansive deck on the water side of the house. This deck functions as an extension of the main level and effectively adds several hundred square feet of additional living space. We then enveloped this building shell in a shingled craftsman style that is a hallmark of Seattle residential architecture.

Designed to take advantage of a gently sloping up-Island property, this 5500 sq. ft. (not including finished basement) six-bedroom home includes staggered floor levels that climb from the front of the site to the rear. Generous, open living space on the entry level -- anchored on the west end by a fireplace and on the east end by the kitchen -- borders a dining area that’s nestled under a roof which also shelters the adjacent wrap-around porch. A deck off the rear of the dining space extends around the kitchen and is easily accessible from the nearby family room, too. Bedrooms occupy the other above-grade levels, including, at the upper-most level, the master suite comprised of a study, roof deck, master bath, walk-in closets and the master bedroom. A clean-lined interior of warm neutrals sets a soothing tone in which the Island landscape is welcomed through expansive windows, porches and decks. Clad in white cedar shingles with a red cedar roof, the West Tisbury House will softly weather in-tune with its meadow site. Lee’s panache for artful contrasts pairs the richness of strong materials, such as oak and porcelain, with the sophistication of contemporary silhouettes. “The goal was to create a sense of indulgence and comfort, making every moment spent in the home a truly memorable one,” says Lee. By enlivening a once-predominantly white colour scheme with muted hues and tactile textures, Lee was able to impart a characterful countenance that still feels comfortable. She relied on subtle details to ensure this is a residence infused with softness. “The carefully placed and concealed LED light strips throughout create a gentle and ambient illumination,” says Lee. “They conjure a warm ambiance, while adding a touch of modernity.” Further finishes include a Shaker feature wall in the living room. It extends seamlessly to the room’s double-height ceiling, adding an element of continuity and establishing a connection with the primary ensuite’s wood paneling. “This integration of design elements creates a cohesive and visually appealing atmosphere,” Lee says. The ensuite’s dramatically veined marble-look is carried from the walls to the countertop and even the cabinet doors. “This consistent finish serves as another unifying element, transforming the individual components into a captivating feature wall. It adds an elegant touch to the overall aesthetic of the space.” Pops of black hardware throughout channel that elegance and feel welcoming. Lee says, “The furnishings’ unique characteristics and visual appeal contribute to a sense of continuous luxury – it is now a home that is both bespoke and wonderfully beckoning.”
