Inspiration for an eclectic dining room remodel in New Orleans

Our Pasadena studio gave this bathroom a re-fresh so that our clients could relax and rejuvenate in its serene design language. The white and taupe color palette with hints of pale green creates a calming ambience, and the large tub is ideal for unwinding in and has a tub deck for scented candles and toiletries. A wall-mounted custom vanity offers ample storage and is complemented with a custom mirror. The contemporary flooring looks beautiful and serves a functional purpose, too, as it is slip-resistant.

Subsequent additions are covered with living green walls to deemphasize stylistic conflicts imposed on a 1940’s Tudor and become backdrop surrounding a kitchen addition. On the interior, further added architectural inconsistencies are edited away, and the language of the Tudor’s original reclaimed integrity is referenced for the addition. Sympathetic to the home, windows and doors remain untrimmed and stark plaster walls contrast the original black metal windows. Sharp black elements contrast fields of white. With a ceiling pitch matching the existing and chiseled dormers, a stark ceiling hovers over the kitchen space referencing the existing homes plaster walls. Grid members in windows and on saw scored paneled walls and cabinetry mirror the machine age windows as do exposed steel beams. The exaggerated white field is pierced by an equally exaggerated 13 foot black steel tower that references the existing homes steel door and window members. Glass shelves in the tower further the window parallel. Even though it held enough dinner and glassware for eight, its thin members and transparent shelves defy its massive nature, allow light to flow through it and afford the kitchen open views and the feeling of continuous space. The full glass at the end of the kitchen reveres a grouping of 50 year old Hemlocks. At the opposite end, a window close to the peak looks up to a green roof.

Located in the Houston Heights, the Waverly Residence is a modern home on an established street of two story homes boasting front porch typologies. The family’s desire for privacy resulted in a porch that rotates to internalize most of its function while still addressing the street. For this active family, yard activity and it’s visibility from within the home emerged as a priority for approaching the building’s relationship to the lot. Justifying the building mass to the Northern half of the site reinforces the scale of the design to the surrounding buildings and creates a large southern yard dedicated to play and brisket (is a Texas house a house without a barbeque?). The ground floor is clad in metal panel and a wood rainscreen that peels away from the structure to become both a fence and an entry threshold, blending the registration between the yard's privacy enclosure and the building skin. Variable width fiber-cement siding clads the second floor as a nod to the neighborhood vernacular. The pool and outdoor kitchen sit at the center of the yard, forming an island that divides the open play from private vehicular access at the alley. Shifted volumes delineate private space from the open public areas. The second floor extends over the public entryway to create a covered procession with cascading steps into the southern yard that traverses the length of the living spaces. The public program expands beyond the building enclosure to encompass the yard and living spaces. A horizontal shift in the ground floor volume produces both a private courtyard away from the lively public spaces and exterior delineation between private vehicular access and public entry. Within the open, ground floor plan, a change in elevation indicates the boundary between private and public space. Custom millwork provides ample storage for the young family. Playful patterns of enclosed storage with contrasting display boxes creates a cohesive millwork language throughout the home.

This project was a head-to-toe home renovation of a beautiful Pacifica single-family beach house. Our client bought this home 8+ years ago and had added on a master bathroom that features beautiful handcrafted Fire+Clay turquoise tiles. Little had been done, outside of painting the rooms, before we came along. Every room in this home was hidden away, but by knocking down a few walls the kitchen, living room and dining space became one large open area with small dividing features. With a great deal of collaboration from the General Contractor, we added a skylight in the dining room, pulled up the windows in the kitchen to allow for the new cabinets to fit at a comfortable height, moved the sliding doors that were never used from the master bedroom to the dining room and replaced that opening with new large windows to flush the space with natural light. We updated the guest bathroom by repainting the walls, adding new fixtures and elements that spoke to the new language of the home. Che Interiors, with the collaboration of our client, hand selected all the furnishings, window treatments, and decor throughout. We picked up on those blue and green hues of the master bathroom tiles and incorporated them throughout the rest of the home in custom furniture + home goods, area rugs, and more. By removing a useless closet in the dining room and adding a beautiful arch opening we created a perfect spot for the Turquoise custom buffet cabinet and carried the arch into the master bedroom to create a space for a home office that features a custom desk. Lastly, we put the cherry on top with The Shade Store’s woven beach style window treatments throughout the home. What once was a disarray of colors and closed off spaces is now a lovely California-Chic beach home.

Our client was drawn to the property in Wesley Heights as it was in an established neighborhood of stately homes, on a quiet street with views of park. They wanted a traditional home for their young family with great entertaining spaces that took full advantage of the site. The site was the challenge. The natural grade of the site was far from traditional. The natural grade at the rear of the property was about thirty feet above the street level. Large mature trees provided shade and needed to be preserved. The solution was sectional. The first floor level was elevated from the street by 12 feet, with French doors facing the park. We created a courtyard at the first floor level that provide an outdoor entertaining space, with French doors that open the home to the courtyard.. By elevating the first floor level, we were able to allow on-grade parking and a private direct entrance to the lower level pub "Mulligans". An arched passage affords access to the courtyard from a shared driveway with the neighboring homes, while the stone fountain provides a focus. A sweeping stone stair anchors one of the existing mature trees that was preserved and leads to the elevated rear garden. The second floor master suite opens to a sitting porch at the level of the upper garden, providing the third level of outdoor space that can be used for the children to play. The home's traditional language is in context with its neighbors, while the design allows each of the three primary levels of the home to relate directly to the outside. The ultra simple, minimalist silhouette of this 4-piece set connects with the modern desire for an eco-friendly style of bathroom, delivering a solution to the practicalities of versatile bathroom storage, cleanliness, and well-lit mirrors translated in style. Elegant matte white washbasin Above in chic contrast, the pristine white mineral/marble composite delivers a smooth, matt finish which is velvety to touch. The basin is essentially rectangular, softened by curved corners. Our mineral/marble composite is composed 75% by natural mineral fillers and 25% polyester resin. The technical enamel film that covers the surface is polyester acrylate, which obtains excellent resistance properties. Its aesthetic, mechanical and chemical features make this material perfect for bathrooms and public spaces. Forest tones The hard-wearing composite veneer base features the high contrast grain of Tobacco Sherwood for a natural, rustic yet contemporary look. A bold surface full of character inspired by the Po Plain oaks and the unmistakable language of nature. The selected shades allow Sherwood to be used in classic and contemporary spaces, panelling, and fit-outs that require stylish visual and tactile details. The generous drawer – over 100 cm wide (41.25 in) and 35 cm deep (13.75 in) is finished to a tee with the single strip metal griff handle. Room for everything when you need it Above, a pop of color in the handy 2-shelf vertical wall unit takes the set right out of the ordinary, the bright yellow matt lacquer providing a cherry, fun element to your bathroom. Each shelf is 10" (25 cm) high - plenty of room for those taller creams, potions and lotions. Beside it sits the first of the two useful wall mirrors, allowing to people to carry out their morning rituals at the same time: the first is 19.75" (50 cm) square, the second smaller mirror 19.75" (50 cm) high x 13.75" (35 cm) wide.

The newly added bathroom is located behind a modern frosted glass wall; the language of the new addition respects and emphasizes the period details of the existing structure.

The Back Bay House is comprised of two main structures, a nocturnal wing and a daytime wing, joined by a glass gallery space. The daytime wing maintains an informal living arrangement that includes the dining space placed in an intimate alcove, a large country kitchen and relaxing seating area which opens to a classic covered porch and on to the water’s edge. The nocturnal wing houses three bedrooms. The master at the water side enjoys views and sounds of the wildlife and the shore while the two subordinate bedrooms soak in views of the garden and neighboring meadow. To bookend the scale and mass of the house, a whimsical tower was included to the nocturnal wing. The tower accommodates flex space for a bunk room, office or studio space. Materials and detailing of this house are based on a classic cottage vernacular language found in these sorts of buildings constructed in pre-war north america and harken back to a simpler time and scale. Eastern white cedar shingles, white painted trim and moulding collectively add a layer of texture and richness not found in today’s lexicon of detail. The house is 1,628 sf plus a 228 sf tower and a detached, two car garage which employs massing, detail and scale to allow the main house to read as dominant but not overbearing.
