Home is about creating a sense of place. Little moments add up to a sense of well being, such as looking out at framed views of the garden, or feeling the ocean breeze waft through the house. This connection to place guided the overall design, with the practical requirements to add a bedroom and bathroom quickly ( the client was pregnant!), and in a way that allowed the couple to live at home during the construction. The design also focused on connecting the interior to the backyard while maintaining privacy from nearby neighbors. Sustainability was at the forefront of the project, from choosing green building materials to designing a high-efficiency space. The composite bamboo decking, cork and bamboo flooring, tiles made with recycled content, and cladding made of recycled paper are all examples of durable green materials that have a wonderfully rich tactility to them. This addition was a second phase to the Mar Vista Sustainable Remodel, which took a tear-down home and transformed it into this family's forever home.

Inspiration for a bedroom remodel in Austin

Embodying many of the key elements that are iconic in craftsman design, the rooms of this home are both luxurious and welcoming. From a kitchen with a statement range hood and dramatic chiseled edge quartz countertops, to a character-rich basement bar and lounge area, to a fashion-lover's dream master closet, this stunning family home has a special charm for everyone and the perfect space for everything.

Our clients were relocating from the upper peninsula to the lower peninsula and wanted to design a retirement home on their Lake Michigan property. The topography of their lot allowed for a walk out basement which is practically unheard of with how close they are to the water. Their view is fantastic, and the goal was of course to take advantage of the view from all three levels. The positioning of the windows on the main and upper levels is such that you feel as if you are on a boat, water as far as the eye can see. They were striving for a Hamptons / Coastal, casual, architectural style. The finished product is just over 6,200 square feet and includes 2 master suites, 2 guest bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, sunroom, home bar, home gym, dedicated seasonal gear / equipment storage, table tennis game room, sauna, and bonus room above the attached garage. All the exterior finishes are low maintenance, vinyl, and composite materials to withstand the blowing sands from the Lake Michigan shoreline.

I was hired by my previous employer, Corvallis Custom Kitchens and Baths to assist these homeowners with all of the materials, fixtures and finish choices to complete this master bathroom remodel. Brian Egan, owner and designer at CCKB in Sept 2017, since retired), designed this aging-in-place, accessible shower (previously a shower and separate soaker tub) for the clients who reside in an over 55 community here in Corvallis. Large format 12x24 unpolished Crossville Kosmos Moonstruck tile was chosen for the bathroom floor and the shower walls to minimize grout lines. For the shower floor/pan small 1x1 DalTile Keystones Marble color tile was used to aid in making the floor feel extra slip resistant as the Keystones tiles do not have grittier feeling surface than porcelain tile. For safety and a non-industrial look, Moen Align chrome designer grab bars were installed in the shower and toilet room. The handshower and rainshower head system by Grohe beautifully combines the 2 systems in one unit called Retrofit 160. To allow the homeowners to turn the shower on and warm up without them having to step in the direct spray of the shower head, the controls were placed under the window near the shower entry. This would also allow a helper to assist anyone using the shower in the future should the need arise. A linear drain was installed to pull water away from the zero threshold shower entry. Installing a linear shower drain allows for a no threshold shower which can allow for the shower to be accessible with a walker or roll-in with a wheelchair as the shower was designed almost 40" wide. The homeowners were thrilled with the transformation of their bathroom. The design and material choices fit their tastes and needs perfectly. Now they can continue to age in place and not worry about how they would be able to bathe if something were to decrease their mobility. Photos by: H. Needham

When deciding to either keep a tub and shower or take out the tub and expand the shower in the master bathroom is solely dependent on a homeowner's preference. Although having a tub in the master bathroom is still a desired feature for home buyer's, especially for those who have or are excepting children, there's no definitive proof that having a tub is going to guarantee a higher rate of return on the investment. This chic and modern shower is easily accessible. The expanded room provides the ability to move around freely without constraint and makes showering more welcoming and relaxing. This shower is a great addition and can be highly beneficial in the future to any individuals who are elderly, wheelchair bound or have mobility impairments. Fixtures and furnishings such as the grab bar, a bench and hand shower also makes the shower more user friendly. The decision to take out the tub and make the shower larger has visually transformed this master bathroom and created a spacious feel. The shower is a wonderful upgrade and has added value and style to our client's beautiful home. Check out the before and after photographs as well as the video! We crafted a design plan that included converting two smaller bedrooms, a small bath and walk-in closet into a spacious master suite with a wheelchair accessible bathroom and three closets. Custom, double pocket doors invite you into the 25-foot wide, light-filled bedroom with generous floor space to maneuver around the bed and furniture. Hardwood floors, recessed lighting and window views to the owner’s gardens make this bedroom particularly warm and inviting. In the bathroom, the 5×7 roll-in shower features natural marble tile with a custom rug pattern. There’s also a new, accessible sink and vanity with plenty of storage. Wider hallways and pocket doors were installed throughout as well as a completely updated seated chairlift that allows access from the garage to the second floor. Altogether, it’s a beautiful space where the homeowners can comfortably live for years to come.
