Located next to Chicago's iconic Drake Hotel in the Drake Tower, this 2-bedroom pied-à-terre received a comprehensive renovation, with architecture and interior design by Michael Howells. Appointments are colorful and fresh, but also evoke the Drake’s classic origins, aiming to strike a timeless balance between contemporary and traditional. All painted cabinets are made from Alder. Unique detail to note for the kitchen is the single seamless top shelve pieces on the top of the cook top and side wall that extend 12 feet without any gaps. Inspiration for a bathroom remodel in DC Metro

A recently moved couple decided to renovate their new home starting with their master bathroom. This couple were very intrigued with bold colors and extraordinary fixtures. It started with choosing a bold steel free standing tub colored with black on the outside and white lon the inside. This color scheme carried over into the mosaic tiles into the shower running down vertically to accentuate a black marble top and gold mirror trim, opposite the shower area. Prior walls were taken down and a new angled wall was made to house new round custom-made double vanity cabinets. A new commode room was built behind new shower space along with double shower panel and rain shower over river rock stone floors, and porcelain floor with heated floor underneath. A tray ceiling in the middle of bathroom trimmed with gold crown and painted in black accent helps set apart bathroom project.

Wall to wall carpet was removed and floors and stair treads were repaired. A new custom herringbone patterned runner (neutral and bright but very durable!) was installed thanks to Hansel's Carpet of Westfield. The hallway leads to a fabulously fun gallery wall showcasing the beautiful Lederman family and some pops of bright modern artwork. A lucite bench was nestled into a cozy corner spot below black and white framed artwork from Minted. New lighting, crown and baseboard moulding, new doors and a fresh coat of Farrow and Ball paint make this hallway a passageway worth pausing in.

So they turned to Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes to create a second-story expansion. With limited ability to expand the footprint of the home due to lot restrictions, the design team created a 25’ x 35’ master suite addition to be placed over the existing first floor. The space would be located above the living room, dining room and kitchen, creating a private and secluded oasis for mom and dad. The children would have the home’s three middle level bedrooms and a bath of their own. A New Master Suite A new custom wooden staircase leads the homeowner to the doorstep of what she now calls her “heavenly space.” It’s a large master bedroom complete with a seating area, vaulted ceiling and skylights, and a beautiful Bordeaux-finish maple wood floor. Bright color paint was selected for the walls to complement the wood flooring and bedroom furniture. The new 11’x12’ master bathroom offers a spa-like experience. The new bath touts a large shower stall with a built-in bench and storage niches covered with flagstone tiles; a soaking whirlpool tub; and a long double vanity with granite top and fancy fixtures. Exterior Ties It Together Like any large addition, this one required exterior renovation to make the addition look like the rest of the home. New vinyl siding and architectural shingles replaced the old cedar siding and run down shingles on the original structure. A new front porch with half-stone columns and pillars maintains the home’s cottage look. A new double car garage replaces the original carport. Both are a big part of the home’s new front elevation which greatly improves its curbside appeal. The end result of this project offers everyone in the family a place of their own. The children have new bedrooms and the parents have their sanctuary in their new master suite.

2011 NARI CAPITAL COTY GRAND AWARD WINNER Having a small 10’ x 12’ kitchen tucked in the back corner of their home wasn’t working for this this young and growing family. Its cramped layout didn’t allow for a breakfast area and storage space was non-existent, both major issues for their busy day-to-day lifestyle. After consulting with Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes, they decided to build a 300 square foot addition onto the back of this 1960’s vintage split level. The planned addition expanded and updated the home’s kitchen via a contemporary design, added plenty of storage and provided a much needed breakfast seating area. More importantly, it created a great place for the family to gather. The new kitchen contains a 48” professional-grade range and a large built-in refrigerator, as well as lots of cabinetry and counter space to meet client’s storage needs. Use of lighter shaker style custom painted cabinetry with honed black counter tops has lightened the space tremendously. A large island with distress black cherry cabinetry ans a mahogany countertop was installed and has become the focal point of the kitchen. By removing a partition that previously separated the kitchen from the dining room, the new design has created a wide open floor plan. The casual dining room flows right into a casual seating area with a corner fireplace. French doors open onto a large new deck. Best of all, the addition lets the family spend time together before, during and after mean preparation. It’s truly become the hearth of the home.
