This 1975 split-level home in a wooded area of Reston, Virginia, is home to a growing family of six. Needless to say, space was at a premium and they needed more of it. So they turned to Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes to create a second-story expansion. With limited ability to expand the footprint of the home due to lot restrictions, the design team created a 25’ x 35’ master suite addition to be placed over the existing first floor. The space would be located above the living room, dining room and kitchen, creating a private and secluded oasis for mom and dad. The children would have the home’s three middle level bedrooms and a bath of their own. A New Master Suite A new custom wooden staircase leads the homeowner to the doorstep of what she now calls her “heavenly space.” It’s a large master bedroom complete with a seating area, vaulted ceiling and skylights, and a beautiful Bordeaux-finish maple wood floor. Bright color paint was selected for the walls to complement the wood flooring and bedroom furniture. The new 11’x12’ master bathroom offers a spa-like experience. The new bath touts a large shower stall with a built-in bench and storage niches covered with flagstone tiles; a soaking whirlpool tub; and a long double vanity with granite top and fancy fixtures. Exterior Ties It Together Like any large addition, this one required exterior renovation to make the addition look like the rest of the home. New vinyl siding and architectural shingles replaced the old cedar siding and run down shingles on the original structure. A new front porch with half-stone columns and pillars maintains the home’s cottage look. A new double car garage replaces the original carport. Both are a big part of the home’s new front elevation which greatly improves its curbside appeal. The end result of this project offers everyone in the family a place of their own. The children have new bedrooms and the parents have their sanctuary in their new master suite.

Bathroom - bathroom idea in DC Metro

1970 colonial single-family house in middle of wooded Alexandria suburb has been the home for this couple for over three decades. They have raised three kids and all gone to college, getting married and few moving back again. Go figure! With growing family, they feel like our running out of room. They have approached us to design and build a two-story addition. An addition to offer them more living space, a much-needed family room in order to reclaim the breakfast room that they have been using as family room area. The exterior of this home was half covered in brick the other with stucco and paneling. All which very hard to replicate. We have designed a large 20’x9’ family room just behind the living room and step down from new breakfast area. Wrapped with big windows, French door leading to future deck area and a side French door leading to a future patio area. A stoned cover brick chimney fireplace was built in heart of this family room, the walls were all opened up, double pocket French door were connecting living room to new family room allowing them entertain large group of families. A mini wet bar was built on north wall for serving drinks. Wide plank wood floors have created a seamless connection to open first floor. Just above this family room, we have created a master suite bathroom. Busting through load baring walls converting the old bathroom into a walk-in closet with built ins custom cabinetry Through a double door now you are walking into an immaculate master bathroom equipped with: • Free standing bubble massaging tub • A walk-in steam shower, with body spays and rain shower, wrapped in frameless glass enclosure • Private commode area • Couple of south and west viewing casement windows. • Large scale vanities and marble top on the east wall made this bathroom a delightful space. By the way of bumping five feet over the kitchen and breakfast room, we have created a space for second floor laundry room, storage and service sink for them. The small hall bathroom was revamped and expanded into new addition, creating space for a long tub (for their six-foot six son) and much-needed large vanity. The entire second floor was redone with added space and larger hallway, new flooring, wainscoting, custom painting, new doors and trim, recess lighting and much much more. The seamless exterior connection with matching brick and custom painted stucco, new roofing, brick chimney has made this addition blended into the old structure.

Here is the after effect, Bright clean cheery but not completely infantile. I added crown molding , chair rail, new window and door casing with a Crown. This gives the room some refinement . 2010 REGIONAL AWARD WINNER Built in 2000, this center hall colonial in Fairfax Station, Virginia had a kitchen that was neither functional nor aesthetically pleasing. First, the floor plan was poorly rationalized. The work triangle was inefficient, a large pantry took up too much floor space, and a series of railings between the kitchen and family room obstructed traffic flow. Aesthetically, the space was dated. Dutch cabinetry, floral wallpaper and a faux Victorian chandelier all cried for an update. Additionally, the homeowners wanted to incorporate high-end appliances and other amenities like a wine cooler and steam cooker. Overall, the owners were seeking to replace worn out-of-style kitchen with a substantially upgraded “open” facility that combines traditional and contemporary features configured to support multiple social and culinary needs. Working with Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes, they decided to implement a series of strategic revisions that would support their new use goals. First, they removed an obstructive bearing wall between the existing kitchen and mudroom, creating a recessed niche for a new 48” gas range with custom hood. An unused desk taken out provided a spot for the new 48” two-drawer refrigerator/freezer. A custom-designed L-shaped granite-surfaced island with bar sink, icemaker and mini-drawer refrigerator takes center stage in the space and offers seating for six. Now the chef can entertain guests while preparing the meal. From an aesthetic point of view, the interior features are nothing less than stunning. Softly painted walls, decorative ceramic tile backsplashes and granite surfaces combine with custom made cabinets to create an elegant space. Antiqued soft-opaque cabinet facings, wood panel refrigerator door inserts, glass-facing display cabinets and a custom mantle range hood are true works of craftsmanship. Fine detail is expressed with flutes and corbels. Beauty is truly in the details of this award-winning kitchen.

A recently moved couple decided to renovate their new home starting with their master bathroom. This couple were very intrigued with bold colors and extraordinary fixtures. It started with choosing a bold steel free standing tub colored with black on the outside and white lon the inside. This color scheme carried over into the mosaic tiles into the shower running down vertically to accentuate a black marble top and gold mirror trim, opposite the shower area. Prior walls were taken down and a new angled wall was made to house new round custom-made double vanity cabinets. A new commode room was built behind new shower space along with double shower panel and rain shower over river rock stone floors, and porcelain floor with heated floor underneath. A tray ceiling in the middle of bathroom trimmed with gold crown and painted in black accent helps set apart bathroom project.
