Faced with challenges from the start, this project required expertise and precision from D. A. Dunlevy. We approached the excavation strategically, mitigating any issues encountered with temporary shoring solutions, extra soil containment systems, and careful design. The talented crew put in tons of stone to create a multi-tiered space, including walls, walkways, staircases, and space to create different zones. Set in the midst of a mature, wooded area, the final result is a feeling of old world beauty in the treetops.
RG Cowan Design BuildThis house was designed to maintain clean sustainability and durability. Minimal, simple, modern design techniques were implemented to create an open floor plan with natural light. The entry of the home, clad in wood, was created as a transitional space between the exterior and the living spaces by creating a feeling of compression before entering into the voluminous, light filled, living area. The large volume, tall windows and natural light of the living area allows for light and views to the exterior in all directions. This project also considered our clients' need for storage and love for travel by creating storage space for an Airstream camper in the oversized 2 car garage at the back of the property. As in all of our homes, we designed and built this project with increased energy efficiency standards in mind. Our standards begin below grade by designing our foundations with insulated concrete forms (ICF) for all of our exterior foundation walls, providing the below grade walls with an R value of 23. As a standard, we also install a passive radon system and a heat recovery ventilator to efficiently mitigate the indoor air quality within all of the homes we build.

HKB Interior DesignNo major renovation was needed in this home to achieve the family’s ideal area, therefore our team focused on lightening up the dark kitchen by painting the existing cabinetry, installing new countertops, backsplash and hardware. We also replaced the existing dark red cherry floors with solid oak floors that opened up the space.
In working with the family on making sure their redesign met all of their needs, we learned that two of the client’s children have lung diseases that needed to be taken into account when making material selections. The new hardwood floors had to be solid wood and have no composite or glue, to mitigate anything synthetic. Thus, making sure their home was not only aesthetically pleasing for them but also a safe space to enjoy together for years to come.

The incorporation of engineered wood floors further enhanced the clinic's design. The warmth of wood can help in mitigating the often sterile feeling of medical environments, thereby promoting a more welcoming atmosphere.

Accent LandscapesThis beautifully layered backyard retreat maximizes a sloped site with purposeful design and natural charm. A curved retaining wall defines a cozy fire pit seating area framed by ornamental grasses, creeping groundcovers, and boulder accents. Just beyond, a second terrace features a gravel garden with dwarf evergreens and a meandering flagstone path that leads to a lower stairway and opens to forested views. The layout embraces the site's natural contours while offering distinct outdoor zones for gathering, movement, and quiet reflection. Xeric plantings provide year-round texture and color with minimal water use—making this space as sustainable as it is scenic.
UserThe goal of this landscape design and build project was to mitigate run-off from a steep hillside as well as to beautify the front foundation planting at a condo complex in South Boston. This design features a traditional approach to the front walkway using a mix of evergreen and deciduous shrubs, an oramental weeping tree, and a mix of perennials. Laney LA, Inc.Located six feet from the sand, this residence seeks to reframe the contextual reference of its inhabitants in order to mitigate its highly trafficked location and create a private beach retreat. In parallel to its unobstructed ocean view, the design carves out infinite pockets of nature within the architecture. From the dining room’s bamboo garden to the expansive skylight above the stairwell, moments of serenity have been carefully composed throughout the home in order to make each frame as infinite as the horizon line of the Pacific Ocean.

The moveable bench's top is hinged to allow access to the heater controls and the entire bench can be slid out of the way for heater maintenance. The double (vertical) trestle style dining table frame provides a secondary footrest to the built-in bench's primary footrest and is designed to mitigate knee knocking while sliding around on the bench. This creation increased our client's seating capacity from 4 to 7 (comfortably) and gave them LOTS of storage space.
Jones Pierce StudiosThe pool was renovated to enlarge the half-circle spa to match the family size and to become the focal point of the backyard. The raised space allows for more comfortable access, extra seating, and a source of white noise to mitigate street-road noise from the front of the house.
