In the blending of primitive and contemporary, an abundance of textures add depth and warmth to this compact powder room near the home office. Portions of the original stone had to be meticulously removed to run the plumbing for the faucet. Drain lines were hidden within the novel tree stump pedestal sink, topped with a clear glass vessel bowl.

The setting is a newly constructed lake house that is capturing all the charm and rustic elements of a time long past. The saw marks from an old style circular sawmill are clearly visible and add to the authentic look

A wonderfully unique feature to the house is a screen in Bobbie's office that opens up to view the living room below. Simply constructed of frosted plexi-glass and wood, the screen reflects the roof line and continues to filter light even when closed. This concept is repeated in the master bedroom as well. As the two terraces face each other from across the living room, it leads Bobbie to believe that this room was once a nursery, with the screens acting as primitive baby monitors. "The parents could go to sleep with each set of screens open and hear whatever was stirring in the nursery," Bobbie speculates. The most notable design component is the exceptional use of reclaimed wood throughout nearly every application. Sourced from not only one, but two different Indiana barns, this hand hewn and rough sawn wood is used in a variety of applications including custom cabinetry with a white glaze finish, dark stained window casing, butcher block island countertop and handsome woodwork on the fireplace mantel, range hood, and ceiling. Underfoot, Oak wood flooring is salvaged from a tobacco barn, giving it its unique tone and rich shine that comes only from the unique process of drying and curing tobacco. To keep the design from being too monotonous, concrete countertops are selected to outline the perimeter cabinetry, while wire mesh cabinet frontage, aged bronze hardware, primitive light fixtures and playful bar stools liven the space and add a touch of elegance.
